New Or Old To Cycling Information!   Message List

These are some suggestions that local riders have put together for
fellow cyclists. Check them out! These are some "rules" I was
unaware of. This information will put us all on the same "rider
etiquette" page!

1. Come to the ride prepared with ID, spare tube, air, water, small
snack and helmet. Arrive a few minutes earlier than start time to
prepare for on time ride departure.
2. Ride at group stated pace. If pace is too slow, you should be on
the next level ride.
3. Do not let gaps occur. If you are in a lead pack slow your pedaling
to let the rest of the pack catch-up.
4. Learn and use appropriate hand signals for turning and stopping.
5. Communicate to fellow riders, using proper cycling terms such as
"car back," etc.
6. Obey all traffic signals and regulations. E.g. stop lights.
7. Make eye contact with drivers and pedestrians whose path you will
cross. Pedestrians and horses have the right of way.
8. Ride on open public roads as close to the shoulder as possible, and
in a single file formation.
9. Stay to the right except to pass.
10. Pass on left side only. Announce "on your left" when passing.
11. Do not move to pass a rider in front of you without checking to be
sure that you donīt have another rider or car in your "blind spot"
(coming behind you on your left).
12. Don't cross the yellow line in the road.
13. Respond "thank you" as a courtesy after you have passed.
14. Point out and call out any road hazards ahead. "Pothole, drain
grate, car-right".
15. Avoid riding closely when climbing hills.
16. Maintain a spacing of one wheel length between riders, and much
more distance on very fast stretches or down hills.
17. On downhill, pedal if you are at the front of the bunch. You don't
want everyone behind you to catch up and fall into you.
18. Sharp braking should only be for emergencies. Ease or feather
yourself to a stop.
19. Enjoy the scenery, smell the roses, and keep yourself hydrated.
