Study finds toxic chemicals in pregnant women - including a common cosmetic ingredient
We'd like to think that mama's belly is a safe, non-toxic environment. Yet according to research released today, pregnant women's bodies are polluted with chemicals found in consumer products - including cosmetics.
In "Earliest Exposures," our partners at Washington Toxics Coalition, Commonweal and the Toxic-Free Legacy Coalition report that chemicals that may disrupt development and hormonal systems were found in all nine of the pregnant women who participated in a recent biomonitoring study. We know that chemicals pass from mother to fetus in the womb, and even small amounts of toxic chemicals can have serious, long-lasting impacts on health.
One of the women in the study, Amy, was frustrated to find out that she had a chemical called DEP (a phthalate often found in cosmetics via "fragrance") in her body while she was pregnant, despite her efforts to choose cosmetics carefully. But it would be impossible for Amy to know what she's really putting on her body because gaping loopholes in federal law allow fragrance ingredients like DEP to be omitted from cosmetic ingredient labels.
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has made progress on getting phthalates out of fragrance and nail polish, but we need action from Congress to make sure all cosmetics are safe. You can help.
-Mia, Lisa, Marisa and all of us at the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics
I've had a few questions about what is required to be on the team. I've attached a documents that outlines everything you need to know! Application coming this week.

Hi Ladies - Just wanted to let you all know that we've had a bit of a shake-up on our team for next year.
I am sad to say that 5 members of the team have decided not to return next year: Marne Sall Sue Rogers Chelsie Drews Amy Hayes Jessi Nemens
They have all been valuable members of the team for the past 3-5 years, and they will be sorely missed!
We have filled two of the openings right away with two gals that have been regularly attending our workouts for the past few years, are very involved in the triathlon scene, and have shown great interest in becoming part of the team. Please help me welcome: Janet Schneider Melinda Gray
But that leaves us with 3 openings to fill for next year! We are going to do an application process again, and
hope to get that out on the forum in the next week or so. You are welcome to send me an e-mail if you're interested and I'll send you the application directly.
Lots of changes will make for a great season next year!!!

[Attachment(s) from LaVonne Finnerud included below]
Are you looking for indoor CompuTrainer riding in Bellevue? A new sports performance center has opened up. See below note from Ben Biggleston of Vo2 Multisport...
Vo2 Performance Center opens on Sunday November 1st, and we want to invite you to our launch event from 10am-5pm. Please come by and say hi and take part in some of the fun and games that have been organized for the day. There will be opportunities to win prizes and even more important there will be opening day specials on membership and multiple use passes.
The center will provide an eight station multi rider set up which will have four daily scheduled classes available. Each class will have a clear purpose and will be led by a ride leader with a sound knowledge of training and racing with power. The ride leader will help educate and develop the athletes while adding variety to the classes by incorporating cycling specific drills.
Outside of scheduled class time the multi rider system can be rented to clubs, teams and groups of friends to conduct their own rides. Help can be provided with the structure and progression of the rides and a ride leader can be provided for an additional cost. There is a minimum commitment of eight weeks.
The center will also have four stand alone CT’s for individuals and members to use during center opening hours. These units are intended for those people that need to do a very specific workout and/or want to ride a 2D (real course) session. They will also be used for one to one coaching where an individual wants/needs more attention.
Aside from the indoor cycling and power based training the center will have three Precor treadmills available as well as free weights for use. Dynamic core and strength circuits will be on the schedule and during the Spring and Summer months duathlon (bike/run) style workouts will be incorporated into the regular class schedule. These are very effective workouts and will help athletes deal with the bike to run transition during any races they may compete in during the summer months.
Vo2 Performance is excited to offer bike fits by FIST and Serotta Certified fit technician Cindy Bigglestone as well as sports massage therapy through Don Malone and Ann Power of Advance Therapeutics.
The attached document provides pricing information and also includes the ride schedule.

Even if you've never gotten in a race, you know how difficult it is for a runner if traffic interferes with him or her. Course marshals are highly respected and appreciated by runners. We are extremely short handed this year (we need at least 150 volunteers and we have less than 20 so far). The Seattle Police Department has put it this way:
The race will not start unless there are course marshals at each position, and the Seattle Police may cancel next year’s event! Simple as that. Remember that the safety of runners and walkers is at stake.
If you are over 16 and need community service time, we can sure use your help!
Please volunteer just 3½ hours of your time. Ask your friends and associates to help. And whether yes or no, please let me know by reply email. Thank you so much.

WHAT: LUNA Sport Drinks – Electrolyte Splash and Recovery Smoothie – will both be discontinued at the end of the month.
WHY: Unfortunately, the excitement we all had for the product did not
translate into sales at retail. This meant that we were not able to
move through the drink inventory and consistently faced a supply-demand
issue, where there was too much supply vs. the demand. In the end we
had to make the tough call that the business was not sustainable long
term.
WHEN: The product will be in select stores until December/January, whenever
the final inventory all runs out. As of the end of this month, we are
no longer shipping product to stores. REI is your best bet, as is Lunabar.com, Amazon.com, Drugstore.com.
WHAT NEXT: Once you are unable find LUNA Sport drinks anymore, please give Clif
Shot Electrolyte Drinks a try. They come in 2 flavors: Lemonade and
Cran-Razz, and are in canisters and packets. Use ½ the serving amount as directed and it will be a very similar product to LUNA Sport.
THANK YOU for your support and excitment behind this great product
line. We at LUNA are also saddened to see it go away – many of us used
this product during our training and racing and came to love and rely
on it just as you did. We will continually look for ways we can meet
the needs of women athletes and welcome any feedback you would like to
share with us.
Thanks again,
Alyssa Berman
Brand Manager – LUNA Sport™
We asked Abbie, our resident Inside Sales and Cyclocross extraordinaire to explain her fondness of the sport from both racing and general aspect points of view. Read on.
1) It is an excuse to get muddy and not feel guilty about it. I think there is some sort of time travel that happens for me when I speed my bike through a mud puddle causing a great splash -all of a sudden I am a kid again. Of course at that time I didn't know or think about all the mechanical issues with getting a metal bike with many working parts wet and muddy. It was just fun, and 'cross brings that back for me, unfortunately now I have to clean my own bike.
2) Making new friends. You are hardly ever riding alone as there are so many laps in a race and the mass group starts ensures that you will always have a friend or friendly competitor nearby. The group nature takes away much of the competitive pressure, as one woman I was riding with last week said, "It was awesome, no one could tell if I was way off the back and I was never alone!" As 'cross is still an up and coming sport in many areas people are generally eager and excited to share their knowledge and passion to newcomers so the possibilities of meeting new friends is endless.
3) Spectators. Cyclocross spectators are simply the best. How can you not smile when there are people lining the whole course with cowbells cheering you on? Who doesn't love a little encouragement, especially if it comes from a man dressed as Santa or a lady in a Superwoman costume? Then, when you are done riding it is your turn to rally people over the barriers and through the taped course. This role swapping creates a real community feel to the sport.
4) A change of pace. After a summer of counting miles, heart rate, wattage and calories it is nice to take a break and remember that we ride bikes for fun. The less serious nature of 'cross racing aids in the laid-back attitude and fun atmosphere. It also forces me to ride in different areas, the switch from riding in traffic to riding through grassy fields is a refreshing mental break.
9) Re-newed motivation. With that change of pace I become excited to ride my bike all over again. The diversification of your cycling life will help you stay mentally and physically fresh and interested in riding. Even the shortest attention span will be captivated by the ever changing nature of cross. With sand pits, mud, run ups, fly overs, barriers and more it is hard to get bored.
6) Total body workout. The short explosive nature of riding a cross bike coupled with running and carrying your bike you will make you feel better about the extra slice of pie on Thanksgiving and may give you some new muscles to show off as well!
7) It's short and sweet. With fading daylight, exhaustion from Summer and a busy daily life it is nice to have an activity that you can fit in within and hour to an hour and a half. The high intensity of cross allows for shorter workouts that you can do virtually anywhere; any local park, field, playground that is friendly to bikes is perfect.
8) New challenges. Cyclocross forces me to sharpen my technical skills without making it feel like I am doing boring drills. Riding on uneven grass, dirt, gravel, roots, through sand and mud, over barriers, off camber, s-turns...it all helps and will easily transfer to your other riding pursuits.
9) Anyone can do it. Whether you are hoping on a dirt bike path or competing on a national level, 'cross is accessible to you. It is up to you how hard or technical you want to make it.
10) Did I mention it was fun?!?!
Okay, now back to making the neighbors wonder why I am out in the yard jumping on and off my bike and weaving through trees. I wish you all a fun 'cross season!

Way to go LaVonne...these are things that so many new riders are not familiar with & I still see rider's riding without knee warmers when the temperature drops below 60.

seemed like a good time to send this out! ;-)
Fall and Winter Riding Gear
They key to fall and winter riding is to keep warm and dry by dressing
in layers and wearing adequate protection. A long-sleeve wicking base
layer is key, whether under a short sleeve jersey, long sleeve jersey
or jacket. Wool is great for this, as it retains heat even when wet. Having layers you can strip off as you warm up will also
keep you comfortable. For example arm warmers and vests are things that
are easy to take off and stuff in the back pocket of your jersey.
Having a cheap, clear plastic rain jacket is excellent to start out
with rolled up in the back jersey pocket in case you encounter rain.
Also make sure you have enough food with you, as you'll burn more
calories in the winter, trying to keep your body warm!
Here are some things that are essential, and some things that are extravagant!
Fall Arm warmers Knee warmers Nylon vest (with mesh back for ventilation or solid) Ear band Toe covers Anti-fog wipes for glasses - great for keeping your glasses from fogging up when you stop. Can usually get them in ski shops. Winter Wind front tights Neoprene booties Warm
Jacket - I would recommend something wind resistant, but not necessarily a nylon jacket, as they tend to be billowy. Skull cap - has to be pretty cold to warrant this, I usually wear an earband. Long fingered gloves (duh!) Lobster gloves
- these are like mittens, but keep two fingers together, like lobster
claws. They are very warm, and are great for 30-40 degrees.
Rain Gore-Tex Jacket (pit zips are important to prevent overheating) Gore-Tex Pants (a little overkill, except in torrential rain!) Plastic rain jacket - these are clear and available at all bike shops Gore-Tex gloves - it's great if you can find these in a shell to wear over your regular gloves. Gore-Tex oversocks - these go over socks, but inside shoes. Can be a little overkill on anything but torrential rains. Bike hat with small bill - you've seen people on the street wear these, but they're great for keeping the rain out of your face.
Bike Fenders over front and back wheel with a mud flap in back! Puncture resistant tires Flashing red light for back of bike Light for front
- if you're doing a lot of riding in the dark (esp. commuting),
investing in a rechargeable battery headlight, like Night Rider or
Light 'N Motion is key.
*** Be sure and take care of your bike
when you're riding in the rain. Nothing wears the parts out faster than
the grit on the road. If your bike gets wet on a ride, it's best to
gently hose it off after the ride. Wipe off the chain as well, and
remember it will need to be re-lubed after it gets wet. Always plan on
lubing it after every 3 - 5 rides regardless.

are easy to take off and stuff in the back pocket of your jersey.
I think this was supposed to go to the group, not just me...and it was so nice I
wanted to forward it!

This could be good, especially if you're looking at doing your first one next year!

I forwarded to a couple of good friends of mine...Anna has done IM 3 years in a row, but is taking a break to have a baby - she may know someone who might be interested. Also, Michelle who did her first half IM in Victoria this year and is training for IM for next year. She is also a certified tri coach and as been racing for about 10 years...
Good luck!

Hi a,,
Is anyone on the list (or anyone off the list you know) interested in guiding a blind female athlete at IM Lake Placid next year? She is having some challenges in finding a female to train/compete with from this area. Read on below for a description of what might be required, and if you are interested, email me directly and I'll put you in touch with Patricia.
Thanks,

Hello All,
I a bit of a newbie on this list. I’ve historically been more an endurance runner than a triatheloner. I am transitioning to triathelons in order to take on a IM distance event. I’m training to complete iron Man Lake Placid next year.
I’m a blind athlete planning to compete in the parathlete division. Due to WTC regulations I am only allowed to enter in IM Lake Placid, and none of the races nearer to our vicinity. Additionally WTC has regulations that require I be tethered to someone of the same sex throughout the duration of the race, and I will complete the bike section on a tandem bike. I’m writing to ask if anyone from this list would be interested in being my guide. I currently had a guide, Tanner Tennyson. We discovered that we will be disqualified as he is a male guide. I’ve been working with a nonprofit, C Different, which connects blind athletes with guides, they have 60 available male volunteers, and not one single lady who wants to complete the IM distance. I’m hoping to find someone from my area to train with as there is some complexity in the communication and such when completing a long course.
Please let me know, if you, or anyone you know might be interested. Your efforts would be greatly appreciated.
