I-90 Bridge Repair
Bridging with Bikes

With an hour or more of travel time just to cross the I-90 Bridge during the upcoming repairs, the predictions for drivers are dire, but the alternative is great! What better time to try bicycle commuting?

Cascade worked with WSDOT to ensure the bike and pedestrian path would be open and accessible during construction through the use of two temporary bridges. In addition, we're encouraging all commuters to try bicycle commuting. As part of our "Bridging with Bikes" program, we'll have bagels and juice for bike commuters at Mercer Island's Park on the Lid on July 10, 17 and 24 from 6 to 9 a.m.

Ride with a Bike Pilot!
Not sure how to get from A to B? A Bike Pilot can help guide you to your destination! Stop by the Bridging with Bikes tent for a guided ride to destinations such as Mercer Island, downtown Seattle, the U-District and Bellevue. Are you an experienced rider who would be willing to pilot a new commuter? Contact us to volunteer your navigational services.

Take a Free Commute Class
New to bike commuting? Don't let that drive you into I-90 traffic. Take a free commute class with a certified Cascade instructor. Bring your lunch and bring your questions! Prefer a class at your workplace? Contact us today to learn about workplace commute classes.

July 8, 2009, noon - 1 p.m.
Downtown Bellevue Association at 500 NE 108th Ave NE (Suite 201)

Riding with Confidence

So you've got this friend who has a bike and wants to tool around town but your friend suffers from a lack basic skills and bicycling confidence. You know who we're talking about... that friend who doesnt downshift on uphills and weaves around parked cars. S/he's the one cringes at the idea of riding in the sunshine to Golden Gardens for a picnic, insisting on driving instead.

We know just how you feel, and we've created a new class for you your friend. Riding with Confidence will impart nuggets of wisdom such as basic bike handling skills and maneuvers, how to shift and brake smoothly and effectively, and how to share the road with other users.

Sign your friend up for Riding with Confidence and the next time you want to ride to the beach, you'll have a confident bike partner.

Register online for Riding with Confidence:
July 13 and 15, 6 - 8 p.m. and July 19, 10 a.m. -

Major Taylor Project News
Thirteen Amazing Major Taylor Youth to Pedal to Portland this Year

You can help them ride in style!

The countdown to the big ride is on, and we still have so much to do to prepare. Last Monday I was out on a ride in White Center and one of our youth, 15 year old Matthew, asked me if he would get to wear one of the new Major Taylor Jerseys on STP. Will you help me make this happen for Matthew and his 12 friends?

All it takes is $80. Proceeds help get at-risk youth riding bikes through our Major Taylor Project. I'll write to tell you who is wearing the jersey you donated, and send you a snazzy picture as well. Why not buy one for yourself while you're at it? They're bright orange with a beautiful print of our cycling hero, Major Taylor. Please let us know if you would like to buy one (or two!) of the 13 jerseys by Wednesday, July 8 by emailing Danielle Rose. You can pick one up for yourself at REI packet pickup or at the STP finish line in Portland. Thank you and happy riding!

Travels with Willie Weir
We are especially pleased to welcome adventure cyclist and author Willie Weir to STP packet pick up. He will be signing sales copies of his new book "Travels with Willie" with half the proceeds going to the Major Taylor Project. Please stop by to meet Willie and support the Major Taylor Project at the Seattle REI on Wednesday and Thursday, July 8 and 9 from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Bike Smart Seattle Kicks off

Bike Smart Seattle is rolling through northeast and southwest Seattle neighborhoods, sharing an exciting program of group rides, family-friendly rides, repair clinics and special bike-oriented events to help Seattleites give cycling a spin. Check our Google calendar for the full list of events.

All rides are free and intended for beginning riders. We will ride at a leisurely pace and stick together. Helmets are required.

7/4: Spokespeople Ride, 2 p.m. Wallingford Playfield. Join us for a fun family ride as we see all of the places and people setting up for fireworks. We'll stop at the south end of Lake Union at the Center for Wooden Boats (they have a weekend festival) and then visit our friends at the Fremont PCC to get something natural, fresh, low-waste to eat.

7/5: Lake City to the Crest, 2 p.m. Lamb of God Lutheran Church. Starting from the Lamb of God Church parking lot, a leisurely ride around the lower Thorton Creek Watershed. We will explore some parks and quiet routes around Lake City.

Upcoming Free Clinic
7/7: Basic Bike Maintenance, 6:30 pm Southwest Community Center. Have a bike but got a flat once and now the bike is sitting in the garage? We will teach you how to love you bike. Learn to fix your flat tire, do minor brake adjustments and how to care for your chain.

Summer Bike League

Spring training is over and the Summer Bike League is officially off and running! Bothell is out of the racks, riding strong into the lead for most miles biked. Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood has recruited the most riders with West Seattle trailing close behind. Tacoma, Port Angeles, Sumner and Puyallup riders are making a strong showing and keeping their communities in the top 10.

Make your commuting, training and recreational miles count for your community in the Summer Bike League! The contest runs from Wednesday, June 23 through Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009. You can register at any time throughout the summer, although the earlier you register, the more miles you can rack up. Summer Bike League will wrap up with the Cascade Spawning Cycle on Sunday, Sept. 20.

Check out the calendar for all of the great biking events throughout the summer. In addition, Summer Bike League also encourages YOU to put on summer bicycle events right in your neighborhood.
