Hi all,
I have my lower disk fused in my back and was wondering how comfortable these
bikes are compared to other manufactures. I'm also 6'1", long legs. I've never
ridden a recumbent bike but they look really comfortable. The only bike I've
ridden is mountain bikes and racing bikes but that was all prior to back surgery
10 years ago. Now, it's only a Harley. I do own a Recumbent Stationary Lemond
bike for the house. So, I am use to the riding position! Any suggestions are
truly appreciated.
Regards,
David
Hi Gordon,
There shouldn't be any problems with installation as Catrike revamped the dropouts so the clickbox for the internal shifting will fit ok. I had the old frame and had to fab a way to use the old Sturmey Archer shift cable setup. You could check with a local bike shop for wheel build costs. You could also checkout www.prowheelbuilder.com for pricing comparison. I was able to build my own but I was working in a bike shop at the time and did that everyday. The frame does not require any modifications and if you have any mechanical skills at all, the installation instructions that come with the DualDrive are very good. A suggestion for positioning the new grip shift is to rotate it so you can work the 3-speed with your thumb. It is very comfortable and convenient and everyone who rode my trike praised the ease of changing ranges. Take care and if you have other questions feel free to ask. I hope my answers are understandable. Brian Eagleson
If the boom is the same as most of the other cats I would be looking into a
replacement boom already fitted with with the derailer mast. Very simple
process if that fits I would think. Good luck and gratz on your new cat.
The costs sure make the dual drive seem like a good choice. The gearing numbers are right in the sweet-spot on the bottom, and it keeps the front end nice and tidy!
How much did the new wheel and lacing up the hub cost you?Are there any hassles with installation?Do you have to drill or modify the frame in any way?
By the way, I could not find your pics.Searching for “Beagle 77” brought up 53,577 results!
Hi Gordon,
I would suggest looking at the SRAM DualDrive option instead of changing the
boom. The DualDrive offers a 3-speed internal gearing with a ratio of 73%, 100%,
and 136% of original gearing. This would match a triple chainring and still have
your external gearing also. All shifting would be at the rear wheel for more
efficiency. It works really smooth and I had installed one on a '03 Catrike
Road. I was able to pull a 70# load behind without any trouble. The only time I
could sense the load was on downhills when it pushed me along. It would involve
having a wheel built with the new hub but it eliminates the hassles of front
deraillieurs. The system shifts smoothly under load or at a stop. It uses the
same idea as the Sturmey Archer internal 3-speed. Can be shifted while stopped
for a smooth start even from an incline. They offer a single control to operate
both the 3-speed internal and the 8-9 speed external gearing cluster. You can
see my trike at www.webshots.com. Under advanced search enter beagle77 for
member search and look in the Dale's Bike Shop folder. The first recumbent is
also mine and I tried the DualDrive system on it first. It worked fantastic too
bad Trek only produced this bike for 2 years. It is harder to start on an
incline which is why the DualDrive was a nice option for it. I didn't take any
close-ups of the install on the Catrike but at the end of this folder are pics
of a Trek SOHO that I have the drive on. This particular bike id not have front
shifting and I opted for this set-up as I have never been impressed with front
deraillieurs myself. I was working at Dale's when I decided to experiment with
SRAM's system. I was not disappointed with any bike I tried it on. Hope this
info helps give you some ideas. I guarantee you would not be disappointed either
with this option. Take care and good biking. Brian Eagleson.
Hello Catrike owners!
I just bought a Villager, and with the crazy hills around here, I won't get far
on the single chainring. I want to fit a boom with a derailleur post and a
triple chainring, but I have no idea what components I need, or how to ensure
that all the bits are compatible.
Here what I do know: I want a 24-tooth granny gear and a 48 tooth big ring.
Please advise.
With thanks,
Gordon

Frame failure is not an issue with Catrikes. The bends being on multi-
plains make it even stronger then most steel trikes and if your near
the ocean your frame will be standing long after the steel ones have
rotted. Catrike frames are more ridged and most of your suspension
will be based on your tire selection. I choose 1.75 Schwalbe Marathon
Plus Tires for a flat free and very well sprung ride. Much to consider
for sure but the frame strength is a non issue to be sure. Hope this
helps. Trike on. Included a link to a review of my setup for
reference. http://www.utahtrikes.com/RECENTTRIKE-Tims_Expedition_FL.html
Agreed!!!
Mike at Easy Street is awesome! He is very patient, mechanically
competent, and a small business owner.
I went over there this weekend and got hooked up with a Catrike Road.
Decent prices, small shop, but there are always other "bent" riders
showing up.
Highly Recommend+++++will use again!!!!

I am an Expedition rider since last October ...added the Expedition to
my 2-wheel bent I have been riding since 1998. I have upgraded my
yellow Expedition with teflon headsset bearings, added "upper
handlebar" bar ends for mirror mounts, and added locking brake levers.
I travel full time in a motorhome and am always on the lookout for
paved bike trails where I travel. Can anyone steer me to some paved
trails in East Texas?
I have a Sun Trike, but it's in good use. Maybe try eBay or
Craigslist...Good luck!

We now have a New and Improved forum at
http://rrsc.forumotion.com/index.htm complete with a Chat Area, but be
advised in order to access the chat area you must register with the
forum before it appears at the bottom of the page. Hope to see you
there soon.
I think he was asking for himself to be unsubscribed from the list.
Some people don't know how to do it themselves.

And the Florida Bicycle Safari is April 18 - 23 :(
Hey guys,
Mark your calendars and either set these days aside (Friday April 17
to Sunday April 19, 09) or CANCEL anything that you may have planned
because the Recumbent Riders of the NORTH, CENTRAL & SOUTH FLORIDA,
and maybe some equally crazy bent riders from Georgia and Ohio, will
be conspiring to engage in a coordinated assault of the Withlacoochee
Trail.
We will be launching this coordinated attack from the very popular
Central Motel in Inverness, Florida and, for now we have RESERVED a
block of 15 ROOMS at a GROUP RATE DISCOUNT. More details will follow.
For now, PLEASE make a reservation and send me an email so I can
start a head count. We need a head count before we can make dinner
plans!!!
Don't MISS this opportunity to have the most fun one can legally
have. PLEASE FEEL FREE to invite everybody. TELL YOUR FAVORITE BIKE
SHOP that WE WILL BE THERE. They may want to bring a few demos!!!
Please do NOT HESITATE to HELP US PROMOTE THIS EVENT. So FAR, we know
that Internationally known BOB, who is also known for his addictive
COOKIES and CRABIE Bent Riders in the Central Region is BUSY working
on this event.
To get your group rate you must call 1-800-554-7241 and say that
you are with the FLORIDA RECUMBENT RIDERS!!!!
PLEASE CALL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to MAKE SURE YOU GET A ROOM. THESE
ROOM WONT LAST!!!!

Michael,
Thanks for the welcome. I spent the last several weeks looking
into different trikes, and came solidly to the conclusion that
Catrike is right for me. I cannot wait to get my expedition. Thanks
for the assisitance offer, and I be in touch if I have any questions.
All the best,
Jeremy

Hi Everyone! I am new to
the group, and just about to purchase my
first Catrike. I am planning to take advantage of the Red White and
Blue sale to buy an expedition, but thought I would check around first
and see if anyone has one they would be willing to part with first. I
am ready to buy now, so let me know if you have one available. Glad to
find this group, and cannot wait to be a Catrike owner.
