Greetings: I am selling a BRAND NEW set of Planet fenders for a
friend of mine. He sold his Road before he put them on. If anyone is
interested, they are $40 for the set. He paid $90. If anyone is
interested, contact me at donk@...
Michael Scott
Greetings: I have 3 Schawlbe Marathons HS for sale. The size is 20"
X 1.50. I have less than 20 miles on them and I will guarantee them
to be in next to new shape. My Road came with Marathon Slicks and
they are discontinued. So..I bought the Marathons HS,s but would like
something a little narrower. I will sell the three for $60.00..FIRM!
michael scott
Group: Had Kenda tires mounted on my Road. Well, I am happy at this
point. I had the service guy put Tuffy liners in the tires too. Took
it out for about an hour yesterday. This Kenda is just a shade wider
than the Schawlbe Slick.....but narrower than the Marathon. It also
has less tread than the Marathon.
I did a free wheeling down this long smooth hill and gained 4 mph over
the set of Marathon tires. I can still feel they are not quite as
fast as the Slicks....but very close. Also, I want the best of both
worlds....decent speed, but a little tread for the chat bike trails.
Now to see if they hold up.
mike
Group: I searched out reviews on about 4 different tires that would
be what I would call the "middle of the road." I wanted something
narrower than my Marathons, but not a race tire as such. The most
consistent positive reviews I found were on the Kenda Kwest. I am
having a set put on today along with checkup on my trike.
Considerable cheaper than the Marathon. I will let you know how they
hold up. mike
Group: I am going on a three day trip next week and I need some tire
advice. As previously stated, I had Marathon slicks on my 2006 Road
when I got it. I wore them out. I rode mostly on highway, but also
on loose chat on bike trails. Never had a flat....Held up great. As
you know, they have discontinued the Slicks. So, they are history and
will just have to forget about them. Presently, I have a set of the
new Marathons with snakeskin tread. This is a super tire...very
stable, steers great....BUT...it is much slower than my Slicks. I
free coasted down a hill and there was about a 4-5 mph difference in
speed. So.....I guess I want the best of both worlds. What would you
recommend for my Road? I want a tire that can ocassionally be ridden
in loose chat...but I also want it to be a little faster than the
Marathons I have now.
mike
I've been riding trikes since 2000. The Corsa was my first bent bike.
I just found that, even though I'm a bit faster on the Corsa, I have
more fun on a trike. The 700 is the fastest trike I've owned.
However, I still prefer the handling of the Speed for fast, twisty
roads.
Here are some pictures of my many trikes: http://shrinkster.com/nsp

Group: My 2005 Road came with Marathon SLICKS. I rode them not only
on the highway surface...but bike trails composed of hard and loose
chat. I have over 800 miles on them..and not one flat. Tires are
showing wear. I went to order another set of SLICKS.....and Schwalbe
no longer makes them. I took a look at the Marathon Racers.....but
they are lighter and even more delicate than the SLICKS...So....does
anayone know where I might be able to still get a set of three of the
SLICKS? I did buy and put on the new Marathon HS 368. They are a
nice tire...but my speed is 4-5 miles per hour slower.....It is not
unbearable...but I sure did like the SLICKS.

Interesting that you bring up a Corsa. I have been
stuck between a Corsa and a Cat 700. I am selling my
Rans to get something quite a bit faster to keep up
with all the roadies here in the Bay Area.
I know that the comfort on the Cat can't be beat
though. Why did you change to a Cat?
Still in information compiling stage,

To what would you attibute the greater speed on the Corsa? I can hit 22-23 on my Catrike Road, but it needs to be dead calm (or with a tail wind, 26, MPH).

Hi Philip,
I've owned an 06 Bacchetta Corsa and various Catrikes. For comparison, here are my typical sustainable speeds on flat rides.
Corsa 18-22 Catrike 700 16-20 Catrike Speed 15-18
I could push any of these speeds quit a bit higher in short bursts.

Hi Group!
I bought a "new" (to me) 2005 Catrike Speed today. It seems a little
slow just cruising down the Withlacoochee...granted I switched from a
Bachetta. In any event, I was just wondered what you average speeds
are?
Please post your Trike type and average or normal cruising speed.

Greetings group: I have a 2006 Road and as I have said before I love
it. I have had it for a year and I enjoy more each day I ride. Got a
question. Keep in mind..I am in shape and condition. When I
purchased my Road, it had Schwalbe Racers on it. Well, I have
practically worn them out. I rode on both highway surfaces and
chatted bike trails. I never had a flat or any problems. I had a new
set of Schwalbe Marathons put on in place of the Racers due to the
fact that they ahd a little more tread and I figured would do better
on the bike trail. Now remember..I AM IN SHAPE. Well I rode the new
tires for the first time yesterday and man......talk about slowing me
down! For real!!! Is it in my head or is there really that much
difference in the two tire types? Help!
mike
Greetings Barboyr: Thanks for the support..but I went back to my
conventional pedals. I feel like after 4 ride.....10 miles, 2-20's
and a 40........that the burning sensation remains. As a matter of
fact, just got back from a ride (30 miler) on Sunday...and feet were
fine. Also, I have not had any problems with keeping my feet on the
pedals. Thanks a bunch....but I am still going to sell the shoes and
pedals..... mike
P.S. You are absolutely right about power loss.

One big difference between riding a diamond frame bike and a trike is that it is a lot easier to take the gravel shoulder of a road at speed and not wreck on a trike then on a diamond frame bike. It doesn't happen very often to me, but it has happened. I feel much safer riding the trike then I do my diamond frame.

Question Trike riders,

My area does not have many bike trails but our roads are not normally over crowded either. But there always seems to be that guy who loves to buzz you on your bike. Thank you, Spencer in Avon Park, Fl
-Spencer: I had the same questions prior to buying my Road in 06.
I ride both trails and highway. I always use my flag and flashing
lights (front and back) I also have a mirror. I ride a 23 mile
loop once a week, which half is on the highway. I have NOT had one
close call yet. I keep an eye in the mirror when I notice someone
coming up from behind. I may zig zag a little to let them know I am
there...But still....no close calls on the hills and straightaways.
The only close call I have ever had actually was in a parking
lot...That is dangerous because people cannot see you at all.
As far as a good choice of trike......I rode three different
brands..and for the money Catrike is the best buy in design and
mechanics.... I also ride with several bikers.....and on the level
and downhill, I can stay up with all of them....of course going
uphill, you are at a disadvantage.....I just shift and take my
time....I will say this..the 20-40 mile ride is a piece of cake on
my Road. When all is said and done, I will take my Road over the
conventional bike for comfort, and the ability to sight-see alot
more. After you are in shape...it seems that you don't even notice
you are pedaling....too busy enjoying the land and the scenery. So
I guess you can tell that I am very happy with my Road.....For a
little bonus, I got up to 32mph on the flat and 48 mph on the
downhill..Not bad for a 62 year old guy??? I am not out to win any
races.....but wanted to push it a little...I know there are Catrike
guys that fly.....but for me I probably like the Road best because,
(1) I am getting exercise, and (2) what a way to sight-see...As a
matter of fact....I am leaving next weekend for the KAty Trail in
Missouri. My last advice is..decide how much you are willing to
spend, ride different brands, and decide which one you would think
works for you at that 40 mile ride. I am not trying to sell the
Road to you..but after all of a my studying and riding..by far the
best value!!! mike
P.S. Keep in mind the Road doesn't lay you back in the seat like
the Speed or the Expedition.......

I ride in the western part of KY and this state does not know the meaning of bike lanes! But, having said that, I will also state that riding a trike on the highway is the best choice I have ever made. It seems like the cars think your are physically challenged and give you a lot more room. It also maybe that they also think they will not be able to see you when they are close and move over just to watch out for you. Also cars here have been a lot more courteous to a trike than a bike. I have yet to have a car blow the horn at me in anger or when I am going up a hill and they are behind me. I take my lane to the extent of using the part next to the white line with my right tyre about a foot from it. That way the cars does not have to make the decision as to wheather he can zoom around me as another car approaches. also the choice of a Road is a good one! I love mine. If you do decide on one, get a good flag or sail so cars will be able to see you.

A fatter tire will give a better, smoother ride. Trade off is
some of the fatter tires will be slower than others. Someone else will have to
give you specific brands as I do not know about 20” tires. I run the
Scorchers on my 700 on the front and it’s a noticeable difference in
ride, I have not yet experimented with the rear 700 tire, but plan on in the
future.
As far as the chain tubes, yes, if you install the Terracycle
idlers you should be able to remove the tubes. I run just a very short one,
about 3”long, on the return chain where it crosses the crossmember. Some have
just put some sort of protective covering on the crosstube for protection and
have no tube at all.
Hope this helps,
James

Michael, I had the same squeak in my 06 Road and I found a bit of rust
in the center of one of my rear der pulleys. I think it was the lower one,
maybe some rain got inside or maybe road spray, I don’t know. Anyway, I took
the outer covers off the pulleys and pulled the bushings out, cleaned and lubed
everything. No squeak! I still went ahead and ordered a better set of pulleys
that have the enclosed bearings in them, hoping to head a problem off before I
really have one!

Another thing to consider if you are doing some upgrades for speed
would be to install a Schlumpf Speed Drive or High Speed Drive. Not
cheap, at about $500, but it replaces the front end sprockets with an
internal gear drive. The Speed Drive gives you 1.66 X whatever gear
you are in when engaged. The High Speed Drive gives you 2.5 X
whatever gear you are in. The Speed Drive leaves two gear rings on
the front, so you still need a front derailleur. The High Speed Drive
has only one gear ring, so the front derailleur goes away.
I've used these internal gearing drives on several trikes now and
love them. If you have the strength, they can add much to your high-
end speed without losing hill-climbing lower gears.

The other thing he mentioned was that the trike owners that he knows
that have 700's say they are not so comfortabel due to the fixed seat
and the padding (what padding) on them, and also on longer rides they
tend to get some hip rub because they are a bit narrower in the
seat. They weigh just a bit lighter than an expedition but are
heavier than what your speed weighs.
>
> I have been trying to find a local (within 45 miles) dealer and try
to test ride one before I buy. The one thing that I have been
wanting is a trike with a larger rear wheel. The 26" size on the
expedition is an easy swap for a 650 (which is time trial size) which
means that I could get a real high pressure thinner tire. (That's
why I was interested in the 700 rear.) After reading the reviews, I
am not so sure that the 700 is the machine. I have narrowed it down
to the speed and the expedition, leaning a bit towards the expedition
because of rear wheel size and ground clearance. But as I write this
to you I am thinking that I would be able to purchase a used speed a
lot easier than an expedition.
