Group: I own a Catrike 2006 Road and love it.....I recently purchased
shoes and pedals with clip mounts......I have used them 4 times and I
cannot get use to them.......They are virtually new.. I purchased a
pair of Shimano SH-MT20D (size 10) for $65 and I paid $80 for the
Shimano SPD Compatible Pedal (PD-M324) Is anyone interested in
these? I would take $80 for both pedals and shoes.....

A fatter tire will give a better, smoother ride. Trade off is
some of the fatter tires will be slower than others. Someone else will have to
give you specific brands as I do not know about 20” tires. I run the
Scorchers on my 700 on the front and it’s a noticeable difference in
ride, I have not yet experimented with the rear 700 tire, but plan on in the
future.
As far as the chain tubes, yes, if you install the Terracycle
idlers you should be able to remove the tubes. I run just a very short one,
about 3”long, on the return chain where it crosses the crossmember. Some have
just put some sort of protective covering on the crosstube for protection and
have no tube at all.
Hope this helps,
James

Michael, I had the same squeak in my 06 Road and I found a bit of rust
in the center of one of my rear der pulleys. I think it was the lower one,
maybe some rain got inside or maybe road spray, I don’t know. Anyway, I took
the outer covers off the pulleys and pulled the bushings out, cleaned and lubed
everything. No squeak! I still went ahead and ordered a better set of pulleys
that have the enclosed bearings in them, hoping to head a problem off before I
really have one!

Another thing to consider if you are doing some upgrades for speed
would be to install a Schlumpf Speed Drive or High Speed Drive. Not
cheap, at about $500, but it replaces the front end sprockets with an
internal gear drive. The Speed Drive gives you 1.66 X whatever gear
you are in when engaged. The High Speed Drive gives you 2.5 X
whatever gear you are in. The Speed Drive leaves two gear rings on
the front, so you still need a front derailleur. The High Speed Drive
has only one gear ring, so the front derailleur goes away.
I've used these internal gearing drives on several trikes now and
love them. If you have the strength, they can add much to your high-
end speed without losing hill-climbing lower gears.

The other thing he mentioned was that the trike owners that he knows
that have 700's say they are not so comfortabel due to the fixed seat
and the padding (what padding) on them, and also on longer rides they
tend to get some hip rub because they are a bit narrower in the
seat. They weigh just a bit lighter than an expedition but are
heavier than what your speed weighs.

wanting is a trike with a larger rear wheel. The 26" size on the
expedition is an easy swap for a 650 (which is time trial size) which
means that I could get a real high pressure thinner tire. (That's
why I was interested in the 700 rear.) After reading the reviews, I
am not so sure that the 700 is the machine. I have narrowed it down
to the speed and the expedition, leaning a bit towards the expedition
because of rear wheel size and ground clearance. But as I write this
to you I am thinking that I would be able to purchase a used speed a
lot easier than an expedition.

Hi,
I have ridden a Catrike Speed for the last two years and put over 10,000 miles on it. As far as comfort goes (important to me, I'm 65 years old and weigh 225 pounds) I ended up buying a removable gel cushion (stadium seat size) off the internet that works better on long rides than the plain web seat. Never had any problem with the back of the seat as far as comfort issues. Biggest thing that happened to the speed was when Greenpeace introduced the Scorcher 16 inch tires - tire mileage went up considerably over the Stelvio's and my average speed did also. I appreciate all your help. I have been looking at lowracers and like I mentioned in an earlier email, a Lightning P-38. Now I just want to be able to tour, take qucik weekend jaunts, keep up with the faster riders from time-to-time, and also not be so beat up on the hills. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, (Santa Clara, which is next to San Jose), a beautiful area, but lots of hills.
As I looked closer at the specs on the expedition, even with the heavier weight, I think it will be the machine. I can always trick it out a bit. I would probably get lighter and thinner wheels for local riding and then swap them out for a few day long ride. I've been trying to find a local (within 45 miles) dealer that sells trikes where I can test ride one.
Thanks again for all the information. I look forward to seeing the pics. And when I end up with my trike, I will send you mine as well. I haven't found any trike riders in the area I live, but will keep searching.
Have a great weekend if I don't hear back from you.

I have the aerospoke wheels on mine and some smooth tirs that hold 120psi, I do not remember which ones, I will look and shoot out another message tomorrow.

Hi,
I have ridden a Catrike Speed for the last two years and put over 10,000
miles on it. As far as comfort goes (important to me, I'm 65 years old
and weigh 225 pounds) I ended up buying a removable gel cushion (stadium

Greenpeace introduced the Scorcher 16 inch tires - tire mileage went up
considerably over the Stelvio's and my average speed did also. It will
be a lot easier finding a used Speed than a 700, but the 700 would
probably be a just a little faster.

I saw the special bracket for the QR front wheel of my Road trike, if
the only one problem is that I have to make the special bracket, is
not a problem beacause i'm a metal worker. The important for me is to
know if I make the same bracket that catrike give with her fender, the
fender on the link will fit?

You may want to check out the Catrike bulletin board at http://p216.ezboard.com/bcatrike - there are usually several cat's for sale at any given time.
I have a 2004 Road that will be for sale soon if you are interested. Where are you located?

I live about two miles from the katy
trail. I think with a road you should have few problems. Most of the trail is
hard packed minus which can be ridden with narrow street tires such as those on
the 700. there are a few spots here and there where the gravel gets thick and
can cause problems. I had a comfort bike before, and I rode hundreds of miles
o the katy trail without any problems at all. The one thing I would recommend is
extra tubes. The trail crosses the road many times, mainly on corners of the
road. There are pieces of broken glass everywhere. If you ride fifty miles on
the trail you will most likely need a new tube. That is about my average.
By the way, after all my checking and
riding demo models I decided upon the expedition. It seems like a great bike
and is so comfortable it is amazing!
Pics will come soon!

Greetings: I have a 2006 Road with standard tires. I
am planning a

I have been reading about trail
conditions and wanted to know if anyone has ridden this trail and what
would be the best tires for it. I read some reviews and many said not
to take a road bike...take a hybrid or mountain...But I am riding the
Catrike. Would I be wise to get a heftier tire? If so, what would
someone recommend? Thanks

I started with a Catrike and ended up with a Greenspeed GTO with sclumpf drive and fairing. This trike I expect to have and enjoy for a long time.

Having just joined the board myself I first wanted to thank the admins
for having it in the first place. Looking forward to spending some
more time around here.
My wife and I bought two 06 Speeds in late October and have great luck
with them so far. Being 6' 4" getting in and out of the Speed is a
little cumbersome but using the handlebars make it pretty easy.
Although I put a bar end mirror on one bar this weekend and I can see
I'm going to have to find a new way to get out. Some people like the
handbrake slingshot method.
The angle when riding especially when you use the neck rest is not
unlike riding in an easy chair. Before I bought the Cats I remember
reading about the seat angle and thinking it was too reclined, but
when I got them all I could think about was how the 700 felt.
My father in law has a couple Sun recumbents and the cats sit a little
different. The sun's are a lot like sitting in a padded chair, where
as the Cats have a little more give. Maybe like a tight little
hammock? (not a lot of give but you sink a little) Very supportive and
awesome for long distances.
