I increased my big chainring slightly from stock on an 04 speed up to I think 55T.  Had a hard time finding a chainring that had the "pegs and ramps" necessary to make it shift OK.  One of the reasons I changed it was that I was in a low speed crash with a dumb kid in a pickup who tried to run over me, coming into my path while driving the wrong way on a one-way street and it broke enough teeth to make replacement necessary.  of course, he wasn't at fault <groan>
