Hi Denis,The pics of your bikes are really nice.I have never seen a #185 in
person, and wanted to ask you what it's like.I know it's a little smaller looking
than a regular Sherpa T,and has a 20 inch/17 inch front/rear wheels,but how much
so? Can an adult ride it? I was just wondering.BTW,there is a really nice 5 page
feature article on the #199b model, in the March/06 issue of the U.K.bike
magazine,"Classic Motorcycle Mechanics" that the test bike looks just like
yours.I thought I'd pass that along in case you never read it,I'll bet you could
get a back copy still since it's only a few months ago.Regards, Steve
.
Hi Steve,
You're right, the #185 has a 20" front and a 17" rear wheel. It is a bit
smaller than the other standard models, so it feels more like a bicycle !
It is in fact a bit small for big guys but perfect for teenagers, although it
is not that much lighter... My son started riding it when he was 12 but he
didn't touch the other one until he was 16. Anyway he is not big, so he's happy
riding the 125. I just uploaded a picture of him flying in pursuit of the bike
!!!
If you want more pictures I'll take more next time I go to the countryhouse.
Thanks for the tip on the magazine, I found a back copy on the internet that
I'll order.
Best regards,
Denis

If you'd like you can post pictures in the Photos section. It's always fun

It would especially be interesting if you have any pictures of the monoshock

I presently own two Sherpas, a '76 125cc type 185 and an '82 350cc type 199B,

I bought my new 125 in Spain back in '76 and I guess it needs a long due
overhaul, although I never ran any competition.
The 350 I bought 3rd hand, it was originally delivered directly from the mill to
Charles Coutard for one of his latest World championship rounds.
When I got it it was kind of a wreck, the french Bultaco team had tampered with
the cylinder, the exhaust pipe, they had even devised a monoshock that didn't
work...
Anyway, I managed to return it to a more decent state back in '92, but it needs
an overhaul too.
I've been looking for spares all over and I've found quite a number of them in
Spanish on-line sales sites. As I also speak spanish, so I may be able to help

I'll probably have questions when I start the jobs, but for the time being I'll

Subject: [TeamBultaco] Re: Rim Restoration advice
Hi Jim, and welcome to TeamBultaco!!
You intend to clean and polish your rims and spokes prior to relacing
so that must mean the rims are bare? That makes things much easier.
The time you spend in pre-polishing prep work will make the finished
product all that much better. Use a very fine file and/or 220+ grit
emery cloth to dress up scratches, and machine marks etc. on
everything you plan to polish, just remember you have to polish out
anything you rough up so don't go crazy with the file.
Mothers Aluminum Polish, or Magic Mix polish both work very well, and
Scotch Brite pads are indispensible and make a slow job go a little
faster, but it's still work. You can also use automotive rubbing
compound, jewelers rouge or polishing clay to remove heavy oxidation.
Use a dremel, drill motor or any mechanical device you have to speed
up the process. Be careful when using a drill or polishing wheel that
you don't stay on one spot to long or the heat will make the aluminum
surface become wavy and you will never get that waviness out. Waviness
isn't an issue with rims, tee's and thicker items but it is an issue
when polishing thin aluminum parts such as gas tanks and backing
plates.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi all,
I just joined this group after acquiring a 1978 350 Sherpa T as a
winter project. I was looking for some advice on the best way to
restore my old oxidized rims and spokes, prior to having them relaced
and trued.
Any ideas on the triple trees, control levers, etc, would be
appreciated also.

Steve,
Thanks for replying, so far in my search for articles on the Astro's
is the Augusst 1975 issue of Cycle World and the Janurary 2002 issue
of Classic Bike Magazine that has a story on the Astro over at
Donelson's in St. Ann, MO. Now I can add the Cycle Illustrated to my
list. Please Email me as I would like to get a copy of that article.
I have a rather large collection of magazines that I have been slowly
going through but most of the Bultaco stuff is on the Alpina,
Frontera, Pursang, and Sherpa T's.

I'm also interested in the Betor fork "fix". What is the length of
new springs for the M120 forks? Mine must be shot--they are 45cm and
have very little preload. Forks have about 1-2 inches of sag.

Thanks Rick,
Wow and I thought restoring and racing Husqvarna's were a challenge.
Seems like there's not as much Bultaco stuff floating around these
days. I have come across a few Astro's, but so far there all
restorations in the $4000.00 + range. I'm just looking for a weekend
racer. I did email Hughs Bultaco last week about parts books and
manuals but I haven't got a responce yet. Been looking on Evil-bay too.
I think this is going to be a fun and challenging project.
Any one know of any magazine articles on any of the Astro's?

While going through some of my old magazines looking for anything on
the Bultaco Astro's, I did come across a article in the December 75
issue of Modern Cycle. "Betor Air Fork Fix" It's a product evaluation
and installation article on the Moto-X Fox Betor Air Forx Kit.

I am just trying to make it smoother and use lighter fork oil. As what pound

Hi all,
New to the group and Bultaco's. Got a wild hair and decided to do some
vintage flat trackin. While searching the net I came across a site that
had a picture of a Astro 360 and figured this would be a great bike to
start with. So if anyone has a model 164 for sale or any info on one

Mike; thanks for posting the article. Popular Cycling did many
excellent articles like this for the 125's. The Husky 125 and Sachs
125 GS articles were also very good and detailed. I can not read the
article on my laptop but the PC will show. Try posting the magazine
artices in Files Section and bump up the size so we can print it.
I found out in another Yahoo Group that Yahoo does not like large
images in Photos Section and most of the time will bump down the size
automatically...LG

I remember back in the late 70's that there was a fix for the betor
forks. I know it intails filling in some of the dampner rod holes and
re-drilling them. Does anyone have any spec's or suggestions on how to
make them work better.
The larger pictures are 600x800 which isn't bad. But that's probably as big as
Yahoo will
allow.
If you have really large scans I can take them and host them. Even clean them up
and put
them in a PDF...

Rick,
The new book site is at www.raceprousa.com
A google search will not show it yet either,I think you have to put the address
in your address header
Maybe the capital letters I used in the email threw it off also..
Thanks again...
Jeff

Jeff,
When I went to the link you provided it took me to a log-in page
that didn't seem to be related to RacePro Publishing.
Jeff's coffee table book "Classic Bultaco Motocross Motorcycles"
will make an excelent Christmas gift. Have your wife or kids get it
for you, or better yet, get it for yourself so you will have at
least one great thing to open on Christmas morning. I'm not getting
anything for pushing Jeff's book, but it really is a nice book and
worthy of any library.
