Here's some nostalgic reading for you So-Cal guys that raced the local So-Cal

Gents,

My father recently passed away leaving the above bike. We dont know if it's a runner or not (we assume it is) but it does need restoration.

Can anyone give me an idea of its worth? We're looking to sell it. I have some photos (if anyone is interested).

The bike in located in the Yorkshire Dales, but I'm NE based.

Thanks for your help.

Gavin

Wish I could go to York - I'm getting my left achilles tendon re-constructed in two weeks. Full cast for a month then a boot for two, six months total recovery period. At least it is not my kicker leg!

Hello All,

The following is based on my old dusty memories and not guaranteed to be entirely accurate.

There were a few small differences between the frames. To start with, the MK7,8 were made of chrome-moly and thinner walled tubing. Stronger, lighter, faster was the marketing hype back then. Some guys bought bare frames and mounted all the components from their MK5,6, to the MK8 frame hoping to gain an advantage (?)

Realize too that a frame failure covered under warranty might have had the owner get a newer frame. I have a M101 example like this, MK6 motor in a chrome-moly frame stamped M101xxxx.

I believe the MK7,8 frames were a bit narrower and slightly taller, thus the side covers had a flatter profile. This explains the fitting issue. I think chrome-moly tube had different dimensional characteristics back then compared to conventional steel tube.

The steering heads had a different shape with the chrome-moly, earlier models were straight tube, whereas the chrome-moly had a narrower waist and flared at the top and bottom. The seat mounts were different as you said, the earlier (MK5,6) being a longer bolt spread (front to back) than the MK8's.

With the switch to the lighter steel, there were some issues. Frame failures occurred on the down-tube behind the footpegs. If the welding seam was facing rearward there were often splits there. Always check any used bikes for this damage and beware of bondo!

My guess from the sounds of things is you are working with a MK5,6 frame and a MK7,8 frame. First I'd compare the steering heads. Realize many of the exhaust brackets were broken or cut off to fit the pipe at hand. Also, MK7,8 had the square stand stanchion.

Best Regards,

Al Sandy

Great information to know, Al!  I, for one, really appreciate the history on this.  This was completely unknown to me!

When you say that the frame had issues with the frame cracking behind the foot peg, are you talking about the frame piece behind the side plate towards the rear?  That would explain what happened to my 120 frame (it sheared the frame in the middle of this piece).

Thanks!

Terry McPhillips

Al Sandy

I understand that pain.  I ended up buying new side panels for the 135 frame ‘cause the 120 side panels wouldn’t fit it correctly (and the frames are “supposed” to be the same 120/135 and 121/136)…. At least they are acceptable replacements for each other from what I am told…..

Seats really depend on whether the pan had ever been replaced.  The replacement base doesn’t normally come with the bolts mounted on them, so they might not be aligned correctly for the true 135 frame.

Have fun…. I know what it’s like since I just put a 135 together from parts….. only 2 ½ years to complete it and now all it needs is an exhaust pipe which should arrive any day now. J  Didn’t quite get it together in time for the last race of the season as the exhaust that I had was completely blocked up.

Terry.

I will photograph the two and post on the site.  One frame is probably not a 135 as the serial number was ground off and a fake aluminum plate glued over the spot with 135 plus other numbers stamped in the plate.  However, I bought a 135 air box off eBay and two new 135 side panels from Hugh's.  Both fit the frame with ground off numbers but neither will fit the frame with 135 stamped in the steering head.  The seat with the ground off numbers won't mount on the true(?) 135 frame.  This is a huge mystery.

G'Day Folks.

Does anybody on this forum have any thoughts on the possibility of converting a
93 175 Lobito to a 250.

Will a barrel and head from another model fit, will the bottom end be capable of
withstanding the increased power and torque of the 250.

Does anybody know if they ever built a 250 Lobito ican not seem to find any
mention of one.

Back in the early 70's i rode a 175 Alpina and a mate rode a 125 Lobito,
converted to a 175 on the open wide trails his lobito was faster but as soon as
the tight twisty trails arrived my Alpina was way gone, thinking back so was
every other bike left behind, AH i still dream of having that alpina back!

Regards Michael

PS thanks for any help in advance.

On the left side of the TeamBultaco Homepage under "Group Labs" click on
"applications" to see some new features I have added to TeamBultaco.

There are now "For Sale", "Giveaway", "Favorites" and "How Too" sections. For
example in favorites we can save some of the more informative posts such as
Bultaco Paint codes, or in "How Too" we can save a post on tank sealing.

Feel free to use these applications.
