Hey Steve,
That was good advice that would apply to almost any old bike with
points ignition.
Thanks,
Rick

that kind of white powder that occurs on aluminum. I dont have a
flywheel puller to gain full access to the points and condenser. Is
there a better set of points or dual points that would fit this
model? I noticed on the flywheel it says "FEMSA". Not sure what that
means. Appreciate your feedback and wonder if a flywheel puller is
available. Thanks, Robb Scharbau > > ------------------

expert, but can share some tips that other Bul owners have said that I
have used on mine to obtain good spark.Along with the puller,a
flywheel holder makes it easier to remove, and torque down when you go
to reinstall it.Make sure that the points are making square
contact, and use a points file to clean, then flush with spray-on
contact cleaner, and run a clean business card thru.I set the points
to exactly .015,and make sure that that the stator plate is grounded
good.Maybe remove it and clean good behind it,and it's a good idea to
run a ground wire from that right up to the coil under the tank,to be
sure of a good ground.Mounting a Kohler or Mallory condensor up under
the tank,on the coil bracket is a good idea,as it gets it away from
the heat.Be sure to set the timing to the correct specs, for your
model.Do that by rotating the stator plate, not by adjusting the
points gap.So you will need to get or borrow a dial indicator to do
that right.I made a TDC reference mark on my inside case, and on the
flywheel, and then a "F" mark at the measured BTDC spec on the
flywheel,so it can be checked in the future without needing a dial
indicater, just your ohms meter. If it's a bike you are going to keep
forever, and you want to stick with the points setup, then making a
handy tool by getting a good used flywheel of the same part
number, then cutting everything off except the center part that has
the cam, makes setting the points gap super easy, since you dont have
to mess with working thru the window in the flywheel, which for me,was
a real pain!.Also,be sure the kill button isn't causing the erratic
spark problem, and be sure to check the spark plug boot terminal to be
sure that's good too.The coils are pretty reliable they say, although
on mine,I ended up needing new ones since the time I've owned it,so
it's possable to have problems there.A good shop manual is a good
thng to get when you order your puller and holder. We sure are lucky
to have such good Bultaco parts suppliers,it really makes it a breeze
getting parts! Sorry for the long post, but I hope some of these tips
help! Take care, Steve Johnson
