Hello!

I recently bought a PT940, obviously in .40 S&W. Can anyone tell me, if
you've fired that, and say a .45 ACP AND hopefully a 9mm as well, how they
stack up against one another recoil wise?

I'd just like to get some idea of what to expect.

Thanks,

Take a look at the Comp-Tac line at http://www.comp-tac.com/. I have
several of their Gurkhas for different guns, including a 92 (not the
compact). The C-T.A.C. (Concealed-Tactical Adjustable Cant) is new, and I
haven't seen one yet, but it looks like it incorporates the best features of
other designs.

The people are nice, and the service prompt.

I prefer the wood grips also. I sanded off the clear finish, stained them
darker and left them that way. The results were great and this eliminated
the slip from sweaty palms on a varnished surface. I get a better grip from
that than the rubber grips and allot more comfortable.

   Hey everybody,

Just got a new pair of rosewood grips for my Taurus PT945, and they
feel awesome. The rubber grips that came with the weapon were too
thin and didn't promote good control. It also gives a sweet custom
look with the original black mounting screws. I'll have to post some
   photos soon. Torro, Torro, Taurus!!!

A good thorough cleaning of the chamber is my first guess. Did this
happen right away or after you had put several rounds through it? If it
was right away, it's probably something else.

You mentioned you used new factory loaded ammo. What brand? Some brands
lack in sizing consistency. Winchester, UMC, Federal, and Speer seem to
be about the most consistent.

Something else to think about... if the magazine is brand new, you might
want to check the feed lips for any burrs or roughness. Some emory cloth
and you can clean that up pretty quick if that's the problem. I find that
magazines cause about 90% of FTF problems. Get some spare mags and see if
the problem still occurs.

Also when you are cleaning the chamber, a little trick I picked up is to
use a size bigger brush than the caliber of the gun for cleaning the
chamber. In your case, try a .44 or .45 caliber brush in the chamber. I
have a PT145 and a 1911 and I find that a .50 cal brush works best in
their chambers. And the .45 brush for the rest of the barrel. I have
also had good results with wrapping brushes in a patch and running that
through.

The only other thing I can think of is a light recoil spring, but I doubt
that if it's a new gun.

And it goes without saying, make sure you aren't limp-wristing.

Hope this helps,
--JT

I just bought a PT140 and took it to the range.

When I fired it the slide wouldn't lock all the way forward after
about every 3 or 4 rounds. A slight push with my thumb would set the
slide. I was using the factory mag and new (not re-leaoded) ammo.

I'm hoping that I might just need to clean the hell out of the gun
and put another 200 rounds or so through it for the "break in" to
straighten it out.

Anybody have any similar problems or any thoughts?

Thanks - Have not tried a show for parts but, for grips and clips, a local

I have a 92 Compact and those are difficult to find parts for. I did manage
to find a barrel and spring kit at a gun show but still no grips, 13 round
mags or slide parts. The 92 FS is easy to find parts for but you have to get
a hold of Taurus for Compact parts most of the time. Take advantage of
Taurus' life time warranty and mail the gun to them for vital parts. All you
pay is shipping and insurance and they'll return it to you in great
condition.

I don't think so. That happened over 10 years ago. You might try emailing
Taurus about that and see what they say.

They're usually pretty friendly people.

Thanks for your input. I bought the PT 92c and enjoy using it. The only
problem I have with it is, when I go to the "gun finder" at Taurususa.com
and enter the model and serial number, the response I get is "not found,
re-enter the serial number". Maybe this has something to do with the
change-over from Beretta?

The Taurus PT 92 is or was made from old Beretta manufacturing equipment.
Taurus bought the factory from Beretta, lock, stock, and dies. Made a few
modifications to the design and away they went.

It's very likely they have newer equipment now.

Personally, as a Colt M1911 afficianado, I prefer the Taurus PT 92 over the
Beretta primarily because the safety works the same as it does on the
1911A1.

I don't know what state you live in, but here in Michigan, I can still get
15 round magazines for my Taurus at just about any decent gun store. I
don't have to wait for a gun show, even though we have them here almost
every weekend.

I also believe you can use Beretta magazines in the Taurus as well.

Hello!

I just found this group, but I see there has only been one message in
3 months so I might be just talking to myself (I hope not!)....After
an absence of about 20 years, I recently started shooting again and
joined the local gun club.

I have previously enjoyed shooting revolvers (Rugar SA Super Black
Hawks) and the Rugar Mark II .22 but recently, when shooting with
friends I decided to go the way of the modern world and get a 9mm PT
92. The pricing was low (although "sticker shock" compared to the
1980s)and I recall reading in a magazine that the Taurus and Beretta
were very much the same. I also recall all the fuss when the US Army
(and NATO, I think) chose the Beretta 92 over the offerings from Colt
and S&W based on field testing.

Well, after buying it ($350; I had aready checked out the Taurus
Website and learned the MSRP for 2003 is about $550 and a search on
Deja showed that $350 to $400 is the "street price") I shot a hundred
rounds of Wolf 9mm (I know, it's steel cased and harder on the
ejector, but at $4.99 for box of 50 it's cheaper than I can reload-at
least with FMJ). Apart from the stiffness of the 10 rnd magazine (I
think you can still get the older 15 rnd clips on the internet and
gun shows), the gun worked like a champ. BTW, which speed loader is
best to help load this; I don't want to sound like a wimp but its
VERY difficult to get that 10th round in. The groups were not as
tight as I'd like (but it's been some time since I've shot).

Anyway, I'm looking for accessories....I heard about an accuracy
bushing (the barrel I notice, moves a teeny bit when the slide is
closed; which I believe was the case of the old model Colt 1911 .45
auto). However, I suspect this gun is more accurate than my present
ability to shoot. I'm also dreaming about a laser sight; there is a
company that makes one that replaces the recoil spring guide. The .22
conversion kit from Taurus looks fun too. So far, I do not see any
third parties that make grips for this..which I find hard to believe
(and I know, the grip is not interchageable with the Beretta). If
anyone knows a good source (I already checked out "Cheaper Than
Dirt"). Let me know.

Also, I keep hearing conflicting stories about whether Taurus guns
are made from Beretta factory equipment which was sold to the
Brazilian government....and which is the better gun...I did a search
on the net and a gunsmith claimed the Taurus is made from better
materials than the Beretta. The Taurus website also indicates the PT
92 is improved and more accurate than the original Beretta (however,
the present military Beretta is a different beast of sorts, the
safetly is on the slide, not the frame). Anybody really knows which
is better?

Be interested in hearing any stories you might have (I already have
read about the adjustable sights on the PT 99 falling off).

Take care!

Charlie

Hello,

I'm new to the group and am considering buying a new PT145. I've
read herein that the problems with frames cracking may have been
addressed by Taurus and have been rectified. Can anybody verify
this?

I've also read that serial numbers past NUE have the problem fixed.
What serial number (letter designations) would follow NUE so that I
might be sure I'm getting a recently manufactured PT145?

Thanks for your response.

Ron

I am looking for a .22 MAG revolver, and have considered the Ruger Single
Six. Nice gun, proven, and you can shoot .22 or .22 mags. But it is single
action, slow to load and unload. Why that is important, i dont know, maybe it
shouldnt be,as I would only use it for varmints, racoons, etc. Does anyone
out there own a Taurus 941, the new .22 MAG revolver? I am thinking of
getting one in the 5 inch barrel. Comments?
Bob

I finally got to put some rounds through my PT145. I wasn't sure if it
was going to be a keeper or not, but now I am satisfied that it is. I
don't have any real complaints about it. I only had one FTF and that was
on the second shot. I am pretty sure it's because I limp wristed it. I
put a box of Remington Golden Sabers (185 gr.) through it and quite a bit
of UMC 230 gr. FMJs through it. The recoil is noticable, but I expected
that with such a lightweight gun.

One thing I did notice when I got home is that on all of my brass, there
was a good primer strike, but at about the 6 o'clock position, it had a
vertical bar type indention. I am wondering if this is an indication of
the firing pin swiping the primer as the action unlocks and ejects the
brass? Given that Remington and UMC use the same type primers, it could
be suspect primers. So I am going to try some different rounds soon to
see if it does it on them as well. I don't think it will be though. I
was also shooting my Kimber 1911 that same day and fed it quite a bit UMC
as well and didn't notice any problems on that set of empty brass. I
realize that different breech faces are going to leave different markings
on brass. And since all of my primer hits were good and solid, I'm not
really worried. It's more of a curiosity thing for me.

Greetings,

I have a PT99 and love it. I would suggest that you think
about the 99 instead of the 92 so you can get adjustable
sights.

I shot NRA Distinguished Expert with the 99 and it's very

Thanks for the advice - if it's still available this payday, I think I'll
get it. I have not shot it yet but it "looks" like new and they are asking
$350.

I've been carrying this one over 10 years and am very
comfortable with it.

PRO's; Enough weight to keep it on target but still light enough for
regular carry.
12+1 capacity or 15+1 with full size magazines fitted
with extension pad.
I found point shooting to be right on target, and rapid
fire is reliable.
                    SA/DA with clean pull.
Easy to field strip or replace parts.
Barrels are easy to find and drop right in, including the
full size comp barrel.
                    Will handle any +P+ ammo.

CON's; Stay very far away from Russian ammo.
Grips and some internal parts are difficult to locate.
Fixed sites (but Bomar and Millet make good replacements
for the rear).

If you can get one in a blue finish, in 95% or better
condition, for less than $400, get it. But a fair appraisal would be about
$500 through a dealer.

I am having problems with my PT-145. It "miss-fires" for lack of a
better term. No matter what ammo (reload or factory) it will strike
the primer but noe fire on first pull, 2nd pull it usually fires.
Also, often the trigger does not re-set all the way forward to be
re-cocked. Does anyone else have any similar problems with these
guns? This is my first semi-auto, so still new to them.

Howdy

I was in a store looking at the 7 & 8 round wheel guns. The salesman
told me that these guns have a problem because of the thin walls on
the cylinder with 357 loads. Anyone out there know if this is true?
TIA

I have one here, that I bought a few years ago after reading a
positive review in the NRA's magazine. I found it to be not very
reliable -- feeding problems, ejecting problems and the occational
failure to fire. It could use some redesign work. An extractor would
be nice too.

I don't shoot it much anymore, but when I did I don't think I ever
cycled the slide manually.
