To all that this dues issue may concern,
I used to captain the team at LBJ and have since graduated and gone on
to play ultimate in college. I do not know how much league dues are
(which I assume is what the Westwood guys were referring to), but
whatever they are you have to realize what all this is going towards,
especially if this is not your last year in high school. When I was
there we had to try to set up games at random intervals whenever we
could with other teams, and it did not turn out to be a very
successful system in terms of volume of games that actually occurred.
I would have gladly paid a team fee for a reliable source of
competition to play quality ultimate (not just 5 on 5, which happened
half the time).
Furthermore, as I alluded to earlier, this league is growing every
year and will soon be recognized nationally (which incidentally
requires UPA members). Every step at organization is making the
infrastructure stronger and working toward a season where ultimate may
be sponsored by schools and the district just as baseball, football,
etc. are. How sweet would that be?
To wrap this up, if you are thinking about playing ultimate in
college, you will probably have to pay $100-200 dues, and that might
be per semester, but it is absolutely worth it. Leauge dues are just
necessary, and you will get way better ultimate and help grow the
sport. I wish our league had been this strong and I would definitely
recommend not trying to circumvent it.
