First off, nice to hear from Austin High. We tried to establish
contact with Austin High before the May 7th camp/tourney to no avail.
Please add a contact person to the Austin Team Contact List under the
Database section of the group website. We want team captain/organizer
listed to facilitate exchanges among team captains and league/tourney
organizers.
I understand the appeal of joining the league as a team, but I'll
give some reasons why you should consider joining the league as
individuals or pairs.
Summer league is geared to recruit new players to Ultimate. It is
set up to draft teams of varying skill and experience with all teams
ending up with the same ratio of skilled players to beginners. The
goal is to have the experience players teach the newbies the rules of
the game, basic offensive and defensive strategies and spirit of
the game. If Austin High played as a team, then it won't have an
experienced player to guide them in their play. If you join
individually, then you'll learn the new stuff that you can use
in your own games later to improve the level of play.
For the most part, defense and play is man on man, and with all team
having the same mix of skilled to new players, the issue of uneven
matchup is mitigated. The league wants the new players to match
up with each other so they won't be overwhelmed and have their
playing experience be positive and motivating. If you all played as
a team, then there'll be match up issues with respect to the more
skilled players across the field, which could lead to a dispiriting
experience.
That said it doesn't hurt to try to ask the League organizer to
have Austin High play as a team. And as Barbara mentioned in another
reply, we should get a count of how many other HS teams out there
want to play among themselves and ask the SL folks to set up a parallel
league with HS teams. If these dont pan out, don't abandon the
idea of playing SL if you can't play as a team. The fact that you
get more opportunities to play ultimate with the friendliest and
coolest group of folks you'll meet is more than enough reason to play.
