Just a follow up;
Avi was great out there. The overall conditions were less then perfect.
Thanks to Nathan and Peter for the brief but helpful tips that
they gave us as they were getting ready for their race.
Avi, the race director must have had rain in her eyes as you
have a much better head of hair then me.
As for this race being just a Training race, that never happens.
As soon as the gun goes off it go as fast as you can.
Swim
As stated the water temp was perfect as were the conditions. I
think the water temp was warmer than the air. The start was a beach start so we
ran into the water. I think I like this better then a floating start. I started
right in the middle of the pack of swimmers and got beat up. Thanks to Nathan
for swimming over me, on me and under me at Leigh tri camp as this all
happened in this race. I kept my composure and plugged through. So much for
starting in the back and catching up. I went out a little too fast but then got
into a stroke and felt good. I could have gone faster here but held back as I
had visions for me passing out in the water. I have no idea what my time was
here as I didnt look at the clock when I crossed the timer. I was too focused
on not falling over.
Bike
The transition time was poor. It was raining hard and I put all
my stuff in trash bags so they wouldn’t get wet, it took time finding
stuff. Like it really mattered, the sec I got on the bike I was soaked. The ride
was not as bad as advertised. The hills , as Avi stated, were there but nothing
unmanageable. I was a little nervous hitting the two mile twisting downhill on
the backside of the course. I went pretty fast on these downhills but without
the rain could have gone faster. I keep picturing me sliding out and ending up
in the woods. There were some people passing me like I wasn’t moving.
This was a great rest time as the long 1.5 mile uphill started right after
this. PS, when your soaking wet and going 30mph your very cold. I lost all
feeling in my hands and feet and felt it hard to brake and switch gears. I only
had dark shade so I didn’t wear any and keep getting blasted in the eyes
with rain.
Run
Transition time here was good.
Just had to put on my sneakers and grab a hat. The run was slightly
hilly but they were rolling , no steep inclines. As always the run was the easiest.
After the first ¼ mile of waking up my legs and my frozen feet I averaged a little
under 7:58 per mile with the last mile at 7 or under.
ALL in ALL – it was a great time. This is a great addition
to marathon running. Plus I never saw finish line food like they had here.
There were boxes of Pizza, candy, soda, cliff bars, plus some fruit for the
health nuts.
Cant wait for the next race.

Subject: [TFKTri] our first tri. (report)
hi guys.
after a tri and a wedding, i am seriously tired.
however, i swore that i'd post this report.
thank you erin for talking to me after what turned out
to be not one of my best days.
two important things first.
congratulations to homeslice -- my loyal friend and
training buddy. tonight i congratulate him in a well
deserved win. he rocked. nice job bob.
secondly, bob and i have now officially hung out too
much. race director asked if i was his son -- that we
looked the same. bob said it was like when owners look
like their dogs. i never asked who was the dog...
Race Report
distance: .6 mile swim, 28 mile bike, 6.5 mile run
mid 50's, overcast, drizzle to slightly pouring
The Swim.
water wasn't too bad. not nearly as bad as it was in
lehigh. however, i had a terrible swim. i hung back so
i didn't get someone like nathan ripping off my
goggles. this psychologically made me feel like i had
to eventually speed up. this turned out to be a huge
mistake. i tensed and my breathing became short. i was
also concerned about sighting. the stopping to make
sure i was straight certainly did not help my cause.
this was not the start i was looking for, but i was in
no way going to let it take me down. i think i came
out in about 22 minutes.
for anyone in doubt, bob had an awesome swim, coming
out about 4 minutes faster.
The Bike.
the bike was great. it was raining pretty hard during
most of it, but the hills were fairly manageable --
especially compared to the ones we usually hit. it was
the first time that bob and i have ever been on our
bikes in the rain. we thought that's what trainers
were for! visibility was slightly tough with the
glasses, but i really enjoyed it. especially after my
bike computer went out. i figured that at that point i
should relax and enjoy the ride. so i did. i wouldn't
be surprised if my second split was faster.
The Run.
i couldn't believe how numb my feet were. as usual, i
knew they were there. i decided for the first time in
my short running career to not check my time on the
splits. i wasn't going to shatter any time barriers
and decided to plug at the 6.5 miles as hard as i
could for every second of the run -- so i did. and it
hurt slightly. the run wasn't too hilly, which
certainly helped. the turnaround was ridiculous. a
sign the size of the palm of my hand (reference photo
of me in wetsuit). would have helped to at least be
the size of nathan's palm or something.
and. i finished. as you all know, the sight of the
finish line is oh so delightful. i did everything that
i could to take it in.
i do have to say that there is a slightly sad side to
the day. overall, i didn't feel the immense joy that i
have when i run. the rush of feelings that fill my
body as i put each foot in front of the other was just
not there. even the finish wasn't the same. so i hope
this changes sometime in the next 6 tris that we're
scheduled for.
one huge lesson that attributed to a rough day -- i
didn't fuel my body. for whatever reason, i was so
caught up in the motions, that intake became
secondary. or almost obsolete. at the end of 3+ hours
i had had one shot block (not bag, block) and one
third of my bottle of gatorade. i've never been so
awful. not good. i won't make that mistake again!
i want to thank all of you for being the amazing team
that you are. the support has been immense, and it's
comforting that i can share even my not so good times
with all of you. and yes, i pulled that damn wet suit
up nice and tight...so sexy.
see you all out there, training continues tomorrow..
