Dear Dave,

I missed the crawl by about ten minutes. Look's like
you didn't stick around long. Anyway, I'm still game
for the game. I went to the bolt for awhile and made
contact with four guys. One, six feet two...athletic
build...great shape...tiny back problem...Super!

Best regards,
Sam Kapelac

Keep in touch. Any flyers, fold outs, calling cards?

Hi folks,
Saw that "gayrugby.org" was up for grabs. Thought it would be an easier
domain name to type in and remember than "http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/
group/TCGAYRUGBY/" so I went ahead and registered it.

I have it so that it will redirect the viewer to this site.

However, since it is newly registered the site may not be up for 24 to 72 hours
(site was registered December 11 at 6:00pm).

Dear IGRAB members,

My partner and I just opened a Rugby Supply Store in San Diego, CA.
Some of you have either received emails, phone calls from me or seen
us at past tournaments representing Ball's Out! Rugby.  We now are a
completely seperate company and are Gay owned and operated.

We carry a much wider array of products and because we are on the West
Coast those teams on the East Coast who want to utilize us have longer
hours to make contact :-).

We have partnered with Canterbury, Barbarian, Gilbert, Rugby Tech,
Shock Doctor, Shock Top, Mueller, Holloway, Twin Cities, Summit,
Springbok, Dynamic, Reebok, Nike, Mizuno, Addidas, Kooga, Mikasa, and
many more.

You will find our prices to be competitive yet affordable with some
advantages to "Family" or Team Discounts.

Regardless if you are a Beginner player or a veteran team we, would be
more than happy to help you out.  If your team is looking for Warm
Ups, Kit Bags, Jerseys, Team Kits, Shorts, Socks, Head Gear, Vests
(Shoulder Pads), Mouth Guards, First Aid Kits, Kilts, Boots, etc.
Give us a call we'd be more than happy to discuss your options.

Our website is currently being developed but does have some
information accessible on how to reach us.  If your team is hosting a
tournament and would like us to Vend we are very generous to the Host
Team.

Look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at local events.

Yours in Rugby,

Hi guys,

Derrick Mickle here with the Seattle Quake (and formerly with San
Francisco Fog).  Just got word that World Rugby Shop
(worldrugbyshop.com) is having a sale on an *OUTSTANDING* video,
Sofa Sport's Guide to Rugby.  This is simply the best introduction
to rugby out there, and very entertaining.  For those of you looking
for a brief but precise intro to the game, this is what you've been
looking for.  The video is normally on sale for $24.99, but World
Rugby shop is clearing thier lot out for $10.99--56% off!!  My fear
is that it hasn't been selling as well as they though, so they are
getting rid of their supply and won't be ordering more.

This is also a good one for teams to stock up their video library
with.  Hand this to a new guy, along with a video of a match, and
he'll quickly be up the learning curve.  This would also be a good
component for a new player orientation.  Get five copies for about
$60 and circulate them around the club.

Here's the link to the site

Thanks Pete!

In a recent post I did cite Muddy York as a team I'd aspire for us to
be as succesful as in such a short time. They are awesome. The link
for them as well as most of the other US teams are in the links

Check out these new calendars for 2005! And the other cool merch sold by other IGRAB Clubs. Gear up & get the word out!

Caledonian Thebans Rugby Calendar:
Have you seen the Caledonian Thebans Rugby Calendar. The Scottish boys show themselves 'uncovered' in the 2005 calendar.

Log onto http://www.thebans-rfc.co.uk for info on how to order and also with details on paying by cheque.

Washington Quake RFC Calendar:

Our mates out West in the Seattle Quake RFC have a calendar for sale too. I've ordered 3! One for the Eagle, one for the house & one for my overly friendly uncle! (OK it's for my mom).

http://www.quakerugby.org/shop.htm

The Fog, Gotham Knights, Gryphons, Atlanta Bucks & many of the other teams also have gear shops, some with really unique cool stuff. Check out their sites & see what you can spend money on.

So here it is. On December 11th we will have the first of a few pub-crawls over the next couple months with the goal of recruiting more players & members to the club.

The plan is to meet at the Rooster Bar & Grill (501 Washington Ave S) by 9:30PM. I should be there around 9:00 which will give folks a chance to ask questions about the club etc... I'd like us to hit The Saloon, Boom, 19 Bar & then back to the Eagle/Bolt.

What we want to do is go out as a group & sort of swarm these bars. Have a drink & talk up the club to guys who might be interested. WE are as always looking for interested players, as well as folks who want to just be active supporters of the club as well.

Once I have a fair head-count of who will be showing up I'll print up heaps of flyers/cards for everyone. I've also designed a T-shirt @ Zazzle for us to wear. If you have the funds (it's about $23.00 with shipping) I recomend going online to the link below & order one in the next couple days. If we all come out looking (Team-Like) our presence will immediatly generate interest.

Dave,

Thanks for replying.

I've never even watched rugby for more than a passing minute on TV,
but I love playing and watching football (the american kind) and
rugby looks like it has most of the elements of football that I most
enjoy. Without as many stoppages of play, without blocking or
forward passing, and without the padding. :-)

As you are organizing this group and planning out events, it might
be helpful to all of us new to the game of rugby if you posted about
rugby matches that we can catch on TV so we can try to get a feel
for the game and its rules before we start playing. Just let us
know what channel, day, time, etc. to tune in or set our Tivos to.

Thanks again,

Tom

p.s. Could do rugby "pick up" games with less than the normal
number of players?

Heya Tom, thanks for joining up. If you read the messages in the
posts you will all find answers to many quesions you might have. Our
first meeting will be a recruitment pub-crawl I'm planning for the
11th of December. As for a date where all those signed up who want to
play or be on the board will be I'm hoping for a week or so into the
New year. Peoples schedules are a bit too mucked up for the next few
weeks.

As for having too many players. I don't think that will be a factor
for us. It hasn't been in any of the larger cities. Not in the first
year or so to be sure. Many of this groups members are supporters,
and members of other clubs all over the world just here to watch our
progress & lend advise as we will surely need it.

Hello everyone, I'm really looking forward to the start of this
rugby team after talking to Dave Anthony. I have a few questions
though:

1. When is the first meeting or practice?

2. How many people can actually be on the team? If there's a limit
and we have alot of people who want to play, will there be two
teams, or will there be "tryouts" for the one team?

3. Where would the practices and games be? I'm all for playing
outside in the snow. :)

Thanks,

Tom B.

Sorry for hitting y'all up twice today. But I wanted to let you guys
know about the RFC in Ft. Lauderdale. They are in need of members. If
you know of anyone in their area who you think would be interested,
please e-mail them the link and get em involved. Eddie the president
of the Atlanta Bucks, who's been a great resource already for us is
helping to get them organized. A good number of our members have come
from players in other cities letting their mates know about our club.
If we can help another club that would be wicked!

Well folks I'm psyched at how many people have joined up already
to the group. Some of you may have noticed in the members listing that
we have some members from all over the world. These are mostly guys
from the other clubs who are here to lend support & advice wherever
they can. Good on ya to them! Thanks guys!

In the week + since starting the circulate this site amongst the
other rugby clubs you would be amazed at how much positive feedback &
offers for help we've been given by these incredible guys!
Seriously, I've never seen such camaraderie from within the
community in my life. It pushes me that much harder to make sure this
club is a success. Team Captains and players gay & straight from all
over North America, a coach from Brisbane! Damn!

Anyway I thought it was time to give a bit of background on why I
decided we needed a club here in the Twin Cities. And what my hopes
are for the next few months.

A lot of you guys know me either from my work at the Minneapolis
Eagle/Bolt/Bolt Underground bars where I manage, Machine Metabolic
the gym I'm a trainer at, or from my days as owner of
Grumpy's Bar where I was a proud sponsor of the Metropolis Rugby
club. For those who don't, now you do. LOL

My first experience with Rugby came from the time I spent with the
Metropolis club, helping with fund raisers, and hosting socials for
the club. I really came to respect these guys who had a very never
say die, work hard, play hard attitude. And I found the game itself
to be incredible even from a spectator's point of view.

When I sold Grumpy's & moved to Australia I ended up engulfed in
two great sports. Aussie Rules Football (The Footy!) and Rugby. Over
there Rugby is closer to Gridiron US Football in it's stature as
a national sport than it is here. Which increased my exposure &
interest even further.

Upon coming back to the states I made a conscious decision to find a
way to become active within the gay community. Previously when I
lived here I had about two gay friends, and could count on both hands
the number of times I'd been out to a gay bar. Owning a Str8
joint & working in music as I did most of my time was spent at rock-
shows, and other str8 bars.

This fall I started talking to one of my bartenders about wanted to
start a rugby club here in town. I was unaware that there was even an
organization in place for gay rugby. A week later he let me know that
a mate of his from the SF Fog was coming into town, and would be
happy to meet with me. Once I became aware of IGRAB and saw all the
teams that with hard work were becoming successful I decided it was
something I could sink my teeth into as well.

Once I'd opened my mouth to a few people about the club, I
started getting strangers coming up to me at the bar asking when it
was gonna happen. That was all the motivation I needed to get the
ball rolling.

*******2005 and Beyond*******

Following closely the itinerary set forth by the SF Fog in
their "Starting a Club" Primer my hopes for the next couple
months are as follows. http://www.igrab.net/startingout.php

--DEC 2004
>Continue to recruit members with flyers, e-mails, and a group pub
crawl (Looking at Saturday Dec 11th)
>Have an informational meeting for all those who've signed up the
yahoo group to explain the sport, the league, and gauge interest.
>Get our hands on a potential coach (We already have some amazing
leads to that end)
>Hold our first Training/Practice session (This may get put off due
to the holidays but it has to happen soon)

--JANUARY/FEBRUARY
>Practice, train, organize, and recruit: By mid January we should be
on a practice/social schedule of some sort. We will also start
working on the nuts & bolts of the club. We will be naming the Club,
setting our long term goals, creating our club constitution & by-
laws, and a fundraising model to take us through the year.

We've had offers from club captains in Chicago & San Francisco to
take part in events they have going on this Spring. And I'm
hoping we will be well enough along to have a strong presence at
Pride 2005.

If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me. I'll let
everyone know in the next few days when the first pub-crawl will be.

In the mean-time, check out the links page to see some of the other
club sites. They all are great, have a gander at Muddy York RFC! They
are a newer club (just over a year old) that is going incredibly
strong!

I've also uploaded some movie files of funny rugby stuff to the
files section. Here's a link to a video of a Washington Renegades
practice as well.

Cheers!

Heya guys!

I'm psyched already by both the level of interest here in MPLS/STP
and in the rugby community in general. I've been getting e-mails from
members all over the world over the last few weeks offering us help,
advice, and support. We will benefit hugely from the all the things
these other teams have learned along the way.

With their approval I've been posting info about our club on the
other RFC's (Rugby Football Club) groups so if they know folks in our
area that may be interested they can push em in our direction.

We've already been invited to some play/practice event's this spring
by the Chicago Dragon's president.

Here's what you guys can do right now as well. In the FILES section
of this group along with the Rookie Primer, are two flier templates
for the handouts I've been taking with me everywhere I go. If you
have the time & access to a printer, go to town! Print some up & take
them out with you when you are at the gym, the bars, coffee shops
etc... Always ask permission of course before posting anything at an
establishment.

Tell your friends about the club. Contrary to popular belief it's not
only a "big man's" sport. It takes all sizes to have a successful
team with all positions covered. According to what I know from the
other club founders around less than 20% of the members of any of the
clubs had ever played the game before joining their respective club.
Many hadn't even watched an entire match before. So I mean it when I
say NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED JUST DESIRE!

Thanks again for your interest.

-Dave
