Muddy Mayhem Weekend in Toronto, a recap   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #259 of 275 |
October 14th-16th 2005 the Toronto Muddy York RFC HOSTED the Minneapolis
Mayhem RFC. And I can't stress the word HOSTED enough. There isn't a team
in IGRAB who hasn't had the bar raised for making a traveling team feel at
home. Our guys worked hard to get there as well, raising money all summer
for practice pitch fees and equipment was hard enough but travel was
another hurdle, and we weren't about to let anyone slip through the cracks.
Lots of beer busts & pub crawls helped.

From the moment we stepped off the plane we were treated as valued guests.
Put up in the players homes, driven around the city. Fed morning, noon &
night, and kept well lubricated with beer & shots. These guys operate their
club with a very small budget, yet you'd never know it the way to took care
of us. I mean friggin gift bags! Fucken' Oath!

These guys are a tribute to what IGRAB & Rugby are all about. Gracious
beyond anyone's reasonable expectations. The Muddy's are dedicated to
playing a good solid game which many of them had the privilege of growing
up with. (I'm so friggin jealous of that.) Absolute sportsmen, gentlemen,
and friends of the Mayhem every one of them.

Then there's the pitch... For most yanks that’ve never lived in a Rugby
town it was a thing of beauty. 6 pitches surrounding a clubhouse complete
with changing rooms for each team, and a locker room. And of course the
requisite bar upstairs.

This weekend was like Rugby X-mas for the Mayhem. This is our first season
playing the game for all but one member of the club. ALL VIRGINS! And this
was our second full match as a team with no whores and our complete
starting line! The end result was 80 minutes of incredible rugby. Final
score Muddy York with 27 (five tries & one conversion). Mayhem RFC with 10
(two tries).

This game also was our last step needed to become a member team of IGRAB.
On October 21st 2004 I started our little Yahoo group and began making
flyers. In December those interested met up for a pub crawl (and I knew
nothing to tell them other than "Hey we're gonna start a team, and I don't
know what that entails") In January 2005 we had a name & a board. We
practiced without an actual coach up until about 6 weeks ago, which by
rights means we got together twice a week to practice passing from
Feb-September!

Until last month the joke had always been that we really really look like a
rugby team. This month we went from looking the part to playing the part.
Many club boards have helped along the way; huge contributors to our
learning curve include the Bucks, Gotham Knights, and Muddy York. It was
extra special for us to have our first IGRAB match against another team who
were in our shoes one year previous.

Our final game of this season unless we can get one more scheduled will be
against the St. Paul Pigs. Undefeated in DIII rugby in the Midwest Union
for the last 2 years. Should hurt a bit. ;-)

Cheers Queers,
