It's probably a good idea to right on the right to let cars get by, and it's
probably a good idea for a club not to get involved in
controversy like this.

This was not a club ride, so I don't see how the sharing of Ed's article
involves any clubs.

I agree -- sharing the article doesn't involve clubs. Having and expressing
opinions doesn't either. But if a club itself gets
involved in controversies like this, it can cause problems down the road. (pun
intended :)

Tulsa-Area Triathletes,

I will post on this only to clarify, as I do not wish to discuss a non-sporting
or non-athletic event on this list. However, for every cyclist on this list who
uses the road for training, racing, commuting, or any other activity, this kind
of ticket is a threat to our rights and safety.

The ticket was given to a cyclist (me) riding 3.5' from the curb in a 9' lane.
That's 3.5' on the left, 2' for the cyclist, 3.5' on the right. Riding any
further to the right would have meant lining up in the gutter without any room
for maneuvering.

Putting oneself to the right of motor traffic in a narrow lane is considered bad
practice by good cyclists, as it reduces visibility, encourages right hooks,
left crosses, driver pull-outs, and unsafe passing, all while putting the
cyclist in the most debris-covered, erosion-ridden, pot-hole-filled, storm-grate
pocked portion of the roadway.

The Oklahoma Drivers Manual states, "A bicyclist can ride in the full lane
when...the lane is too narrow for both a car and a bicycle to safely share the
lane. In this case, it is safest to let the bicycle take the full lane." This
is the guidance given to all motorists and cyclists in the state of Oklahoma. A
lane that is too narrow to be shared is less than 14 feet.

For anyone who was confused about the original post or its details, I hope this
encourages you to ride safely by taking narrow lanes and not encouraging unsafe
passing or turning. If you are discouraged by the prospect of getting a ticket,
keep in mind that you would be allowing the prejudices of a single police
officer to keep you from doing what is right and lawful.

Thank you for taking a moment to read this,

Can anyone recommend a good bike trainer? I have no experience riding on one
and don't want to spend a ton of money. Magnetic or fluid? Any suggestions
would be appreciated.

Fluid is most realistic road feel and quieter than a mag trainer, but more
expensive. I've been pretty happy with my mag unit. If you're super price
sensitive, watch Craig's list for a week or so and you can count on one popping
up.

Carolyn,

Has anyone asked about the women's small top or xs shorts? If not, and if they
fit would you take $75 or $80 for both? I would like to try them on before I buy
them if they are still available. Thanks!

Sheppard Point on Lake Heyburn 6 pm. May 18. Same place as last year’s
triTULSA Festival.

Approach the lake from NORTH, off Hwy 33. Bring brightly colored swim cap.

It costs a dollar per swimmer. I’ll ask Ted at Superleggera about a wetsuit
clinic there, or at his store, in the near future. Someone want to volunteer
to help with that?

As it warms up better and we get a little more daylight we’ll set up a
family get together there for some après-swim fun. Again, will need
volunteers to help. THANKS!

Hey everyone!

For TAT's "non-kit" year the executive board has developed a
mini-sponsorship plan called "Friends of TAT".

Out first two supporters under this sponsorship arrangement are:

*** TULSA RUNNER & Trani Matthews. His store is at 96th and Riverside, in
case you are new to the area. Super nice guy. The store has some good
swimming stuff in addition to running shoes, apparel and advice.
www.tulsarunner.com.

and

*** PERFORMANCE CARE CLINIC & Brian Flournoy, DC. Flo is two-term past
president of TAT and continues his support both in time and talent. He'll
keep ya running, swimming and biking. He is ART certified. Ouchy but oh so
helpful! www.pcctulsa.com

Next time you see these guys tell them how much their support means to you
and to TAT.

If YOU or your company would like to know about our mini-sponsorships for
2012, email me.

Thanks

We usually lend our bike racks to Tulsa Tough each year. It's been a very
useful service for the race organization and the participants. We need
volunteers at the times listed here to help set up, move, take down the
racks:

1. Friday afternoon: meet at TAT's storage shed and get racks and
transport to Blue Dome area. 2+ people. Time TBD. I have the truck.

2. Friday evening: meet at Blue Dome area and assemble racks: 2+
people. Time TBD. (coordinate with people in Item 1).

3. EARLY Sunday morning: meet at and move racks from Blue Dome to
Riverside (Budweiser Tent at North Turn of course onto Riverside: 3+ people.
May need truck. Time TBD among you. Brian Flournoy is involved in this part.

4. Sunday evening after Tulsa Tough is done: move racks back to TAT
storage. 4+ people. Time TBD among you. NEED TRUCK

If you can help, email me, and I will get you the details. I can get you a
Tulsa Tough volunteer shirt but will need info from you to get you in the
system. Tell me which slot you can help, and I'll get back to you.

In past years, we have had people say they will help but then not show up.
It is not terribly hard work but takes a LOT longer when only one person is
wrangling 20 bike racks! (frowny face)

Thanks everyone,

Carolyn, Brian, and all TAT Members....... Thank you!

We're planning a bike corral near the finish of each day's GranFondo where
our GranFondo riders can check in and leave their bikes while they wander
the race venue. We'd like to provide parking for 200 bicycles. Saturday
needs to be set up and ready by 9:30 a.m. in the grassy field across from
Sound Pony. Sunday is in River Parks near 15th and Galveston and needs to
be ready by 9:30 also.

Thanks in advance for your help! Don't hesitate to let me know if you need
a truck. I'll be happy to rent you one if it's easier.

2 Bicycles
11 Months
50 States
12,000 Miles

Thursday, June 7, 2012
7pm
Tulsa's Martin Regional Library
(26th & Garnett)

Join Adam and Christy Coppola on their amazing 2011 bicycling adventure riding
in all 50 states, starting in San Diego in January, 2011, and finishing in
Hawaii in November.

From desert to mountain, blowing snow to sea breezes, sunny skies to drenching
rain, they saw America as few of us have or will. Along the way they met a host
of interesting people and shared their message of how bicycles can help others
through two charities they support, World Bicycle Relief and Achilles
International (see GiveABike.com). They raised more then $25,000 in their 11
months on the road.

And now they're continuing their bicycle adventures by working for People For
Bikes, uniting a million voices to improve the future of biking. They're one
half of People For Bikes' two teams traveling the country gathering names of
support, to speak with one, powerful voice - to make bicycling safer, more
convenient and appealing for everyone (PeopleForBikes.org). They're in Tulsa
this week to share that message at the Saint Francis Tulsa Tough ... look for
the People For Bikes pop-up.

Come hear their story … this Thursday evening at 7pm, Martin Regional Library at
26 & Garnett in Tulsa. You'll be glad you did!

Need someone with a pickup truck to meet Sunday a.m. at Sound Pony and help
Brian Flournoy and Scott Seybold move TAT racks from there to Riverside.
Won't take long.

REPLY to brian@.... It would be fairly early Sunday but not
crack-of-dawn early, I don't believe.

TAT and Coach-Janet Summer swim classes still have a few slots open.

Tulsa Area Triathletes – Summer Swim Camps!

Beginner CAMP! Intermediate CAMP! Beginner CAMP!
Intermediate CAMP!

1. Learn to swim or Beginners (LTS): Monday nights - For those new to
triathlon or continuous lap swimming. 8 week camp, Prep for Tri Tulsa Sprint
in September

2. Mastering the Mile (MTM): Monday nights – For intermediate swimmers who
want to become faster and more efficient in the water. The workouts are
tailored to the participants. For those looking to do an Olympic or Half Iron
Man distance, also to work on form and speed for Sprint or Full Iron Distance.
This is not a Learn to Swim (LTS) class. I consider it the next step after LTS.
Prep for Tri Tulsa Olympic Distance in September. Requirements: Able to Swim a
500 continuously or anyone who has completed a learn to swim camp or clinic.

Both classes include: One Video of your stroke with detailed e-mail of what to
work on, drill instruction, dry land exercises, and pacing and mental prep. for
race day. Also includes workouts to do between classes, usually the classes are
broken down into two or three groups and each group gets a workout. I also try
to take notes at most sessions so each individual will get personalized notes.
