I'm probably the last one to know these things, but just in case you don't
know, 1999 Age Group Nationals is in St. Joseph, Missouri Sept. 25. I think
that's only a 4-5 hour drive so this is a rare opportunity to go if you
can't afford to travel all over the world in pursuit of your hobby.

To qualify for the 1999 race you must accomplish one of the following
between June 20, 1998 and September 18, 1999:
1. Finish in the top three or top 25% of your age group, whichever is
easiest to meet, in a USAT non-championship sanctioned race of any distance.
2. Finish in the top five or top 33% of your age group, whichever is
easiest in a championship event.

Submit a completed qualification form as soon as possible before September
18 and USAT will send you an application for the St. Joseph race. Check the
USAT website at www.USATriathlon.org <http://www.USATriathlon.org> for
more information. That's all I know.

Need volunteers for the Tulsa Triathlon, Saturday, June 19th. We
need people to help out with each leg of the race: swim, bike and run, and
transition area. Could use more help with the medical tent. Things you
could be: packet pickup table handler, body marker (my particular
favorite), swimmer puller-out-of water, bike road marshall, bike water
bottle hander-outer, run water/sponge hander-outer, medical tent staff
including i.v. hook-upper and general healer of all wounds and owies.
What you get...a nifty t-shirt given only to the volunteers, your
name in the drawings for a fantastic mountain bike (donated by Lee's
Bicycles) and Aegis tri-bike frame (donated by Oklahoma Velo Sports &
Aegis), and many warm-fuzzy feelings for being there for your fellow sports
enthusiasts. Seriously, it takes volunteers to make a successful event.
Please...if you are not competing in the event, donate your time. Donate
your spouse's, significant other's, children's time. E-mail Maureen
Callahan at:
	 Maureen_R_Callahan@... <mailto:Maureen_R_Callahan@...>
or call 581-1056 to volunteer. Thanks, in advance, for your participation.
Please pass this on to anyone you feel may be interested in helping.

Many of you wanted organized group training. Here's a regular Wednesday
workout you can count on.

Park on the east side of the river near the River's Edge Café. Ride to the
west side and join the regular Wednesday night ride at 19th (?) and Jackson.
Start about 5:45, ride about 25, return to your car, 5 minutes transition,
run the 4.3 mile River Trail loop (east side, 11th St., west side,
pedestrian bridge).

Ride includes Old North Road, Avery Drive and is a little hilly. The pace
depends on the group you ride with, probably about 15-18 average. The run is
flat and the pace is up to you. We've been running about 8:30 to 9:00
minutes per mile.

Many of you asked for it.  Here it is.

WHAT:       Thursday Open Water Swim
WHERE:    Skiatook Point, Skiatook Lake (Tulsa Tri location)
WHEN:       In the water at 6:00 p.m.
WHY:         Because you wanted it so be there!

There has been discussion as to where the swim should be.  The first swim
will take place at Skiatook Point.  We can debate if it will stay there or
move.  Distances will probably vary.  Bring bright colored swim caps if you
have any.  Remember, you're on your own.  This is NOT TAT sponsored.  Just a
group of triheads getting in some practice.  And remember, no matter how
good a swimmer you are, please don't go solo on open water swims.  You can
always find a swim buddy.  Just my $.14.

Hardcores can bring their running shoes in case a little brick interests
anyone.

Tulsa Triathlon, 1999 Oklahoma State Championship, Skiatook Point at
Skiatook Lake, Saturday, June 19, 1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run.

There is a rumor that there will be an open-water swim at Skiatook Lake this
Thursday 6:00 p.m., bring your wetsuit, don't know what the water temp is
now but it can probably be done naked (or nearly naked). Watch for a
late-breaking email today or tomorrow with more details. (Paul, did you
figure it out yet?)

anyone has any info on the Tulsa Triathlon (how to sign up, the course,

Also, as the weather gets warmer are there any planned lake
swims out at Skiatook lake?

I'm planning a long run Saturday morning myself. The following Saturday is
the Tour de Tulsa. I think we should plan another brick around this tour.
And don't forget Wednesday night is the weekly brick. I know you can't make
it David but if ever you can, we start about 5:45 p.m. from the parking lot
across from the amphitheater parking lot on the west side of the river. Ride
about 25 and run the loop (4.3 miles).

Want a good workout tomorrow morning? ANYONE is invited.
There are currently
		 at least five takers.

Start with the Cycling Against Violence tour benefiting
D.V.I.S. 7:30
registration $20 no shirt, add $5 for shirt, 8:30 ride, SE
corner Archer &
Boulder, 50 miles, moderate pace, some hills. Take about
10-15 minutes
transition then run. Those who are running have varying
plans from 6 to 12
miles easy. Most will probably go 6-8, some are more
obsessive.

Some are concerned with leaving bikes at the tour start area
so we might
drive to the river to run but that's ok, a little longer
transition won't
		 hurt.

Someone is sending out a very desirable screen-saver, a Bug's Life -

it.
This information was announced yesterday morning from Microsoft. Please

Also do not open or even look at any mail that says "RETURNED OR UNABLE TO

Good news! Due to the joint efforts of TW members, and the cooperation of
the City of Tulsa, the 36th Street Demonstration Project is now fully
funded.
Of the $50,000 needed, $25,000 is being provided by the City of Tulsa. The
remainder is being provided by QuikTrip Corporation, the William's
Companies, Arrow Trucking Corporation, the Tulsa Bicycle Club, and the Tulsa
Wheelmen.
If you or anyone you know wish to make a donation, I will still accept it
and make sure it is earmarked for future bikeways.
Also, a ribbon cutting ceremony to announce the 36th Street project is
scheduled for 4/30/99 at 1:30 p.m. at Highland Park at 36th & Yale.
Everyone is welcome. It would be nice to have a good gathering of cyclists
to hear the Mayor announce the project.

Forwarded by Jim Beach. This could be good if you have time. Sometimes I
forget that time trialing in a triathlon isn't the only kind of bike racing.
Even if it was, this sounds like it could be helpful.

For anyone planning on a half ironman race this year, the Summer Sizzler in
Kansas, in August has canceled theirs due to lack of staff. Looks like
Buffalo Springs Lake in Lubbock, June 27 is the closest one. Other options I
know of are May 8 - Gulf Coast - Panama City, FL; June 6 - Blackwater
Eagleman - Cambridge, MD; July 10 - Muncie Endurathon - Muncie, IN; July 31
- Vineman - Santa Rosa, CA; August 22 - Pigman - Palo, IA.

Anyone know of any others that are close enough to consider?

Just a note of thanks to all Wheelmen who were involved in the organization
of Saturday's race and especially those who sacrificed a race to make it
happen. Great Job!!! That's a fun event and I'll look forward to it next
year (weather permitting, again). Time trials are a great way for people of
all levels to get involved in racing and having one that is easily
accessible is even better.

Perhaps someone could stir up some friendly competition between multi-sport
athletes and cyclists for next year. Some kind of traveling trophy for the
best cumulative times of the top three finishers? Just a thought.

Thanks again,
Jim Beach

Subject: [Wheelmen] CORPORATE CHALLENGE TT COURSE DESCRIPTION
From: "Delametter Family" <delafam@...
<mailto:delafam@...> >

I rode the Corporate Challenge TT course today and I thought some course
notes might help everyone ride a fast and safe TT.

No, I don't plan to tell you how to ride your TT as this is a very
individualistic discipline. I just thought a detailed course description
would help you set-up for the corners, road conditions and weather
conditions.

First, the venue is outstanding. The Zink building will offer great places
to park and warm-up. Chillingworth and I plan to set-up a tent to warm-up
under and generally lounge around. Please stop by. Second, the course
scenery is well, I guess you would say, not to pretty. That's OK. You
should be focusing on the road and breathing anyway.

OK here we go.
From what Malcolm has told me about the location of the start line the start
will be down grade heading east on Apache. (Remember there will be no
holders on the start line. You may need to practice a self start TT before
you get to the start line. Remember, get clipped in fast and smooth.) This
start is really outstanding and should allow you to get up to top speed very
quickly.

The down grade start lasts about 100 meters (maybe a little more) and then
slowly changes to an up grade. This upgrade lasts all the way to the first
intersection at 129th East Ave. Maybe 1/8th of a mile. Your speed from the
start should carry you through this up grade section.

You go straight through the intersection at 129th East Avenue. There is a
pretty good bump in the road as you start into this intersection. If you
have cheater bars you might consider going to the drops or to your cow horns
through this intersection.

The next section of road is flat and fast. If the course is completely
closed to traffic (and I think it is) remember to use the limited amount of
brush on either side of the road as wind break. If a south wind hug the
right side. If a north wind the left. If a west wind, go like hell. If an
east wind (head wind), gut it out. This section lasts about 1 mile to 141st
East Avenue.

At 141st East Avenue you turn left. There was some sand in the road today
but it will be swept before our event. This will be a fast corner. There
is plenty of room to take the corner through the apex and come out going
very fast. I have done several TT's and there have been only a few corners
I will take in my cheater bars. This one is iffy. It's good but maybe not
that good. I suggest going to the drops or cow horns and then straight back
to the bars. You should not loose speed out of this corner. Unless the
wind is from the north. Then stand up, get up to speed and gut it out for 1
mile.

This next section of road is flat and fast. Heard that before have ya. It
lasts about 1 mile. Sounds like the last section. There is a slight
leftward turn in the middle of this section but it should not bother you too
much. There are some large chug holes on the right side of the roadway
about ¼ the way down this section. If you stay at least 4 feet from the
right side you will miss them. The pavement is concrete and these holes
will sneak up on you because they are white like the road surface. Does
that make sense?
Once again if the road is closed to traffic remember to use the shortest
distance to the next corner (a straight line).

The corner at the end of this section is a left hander. This corner will
also be very fast. It's even better than the last and can probably be
ridden in the cheater bars. Remember do what is comfortable for you.

The next section is 1 mile long and flat and fast. Don't fall a sleep now!
There are some interesting things to come. This section has some wind break
on the left side for the first half mile, then wide open. Watch out on this
section. When you come out of the wind break, if we have a strong south
breeze, the wind will push you pretty hard. There is a fast left hander at
the end of this section.

The fourth 1 mile section will be the most interesting. It is straight
south. Which means it could be dead into a nasty south head wind. It is
slightly up grade for ¾ of a mile. So far not good. Then WOW down
grade. Almost, dare I say, down hill. But there is always bad that follows
good. There is a very tough right hand turn at the end of this section.
And to make things even tougher you will only have HALF the road to exit the
turn.

The right hander at the end of this section puts you back on Apache. Yes,
the start/finish straight. Before the TT starts you should ride out and
look at this turn. Make sure you visualize your line into this turn before
attempting it at max speed. And I do mean max speed. The down grade
portion of this section will allow you to really get going fast. I hate to
say this but I may even brake a little to get through this corner.

Once through the last corner the run into the finish should be super fast.
You have a down grade section for about half the run in and up grade for the
last half. You might consider starting you finishing sprint when the up
grade starts. It's a little more than 200 meters out, but this will help
you carry your speed across the finish line. The finish line is not the
start line. Don't get them confused. You will go past the start line maybe
50 to 100 meters before you hit the finish line. Don't stop sprinting at
the start line, you aren't done yet.

Some final notes on wind direction and velocity. Watch the wind closely
that day. The direction will be critical to you position on the roadway.
Also, if you are considering a rear disk wheel or any other deep rimed
wheels or areo wheels you might bring a set of regular wheels as well. This
course is wide open to the wind. A heavy cross wind may make areo wheels
too tough to manage. Trust me it's more important to be in a tuck and
comfortable than to fight a cross wind with areo wheels.

I hope these notes help you have a great TT. I plan to ride the course
several more times next week. If I notice anything else I'll let you know.
