The article, which has some misquotes and misinformation, give the impression that lactic acid is “good”. Actually lactic acid is the most inefficient way of producing ATP in the cell. This energy pathway (anaerobic –without oxygen-) produces accumulation of lactic acid, than we can’t use to produce ATP (the actual fuel that muscle cells use). Albeit training makes us more efficient in using lactic acid it still accumulates and disrupts intracellular biochemistry. It is true that lactic acid directly may not be the culprit of a lot of the biological processes we see but when it accumulates, due to the inefficient matter in which it is used to produce ATP (the only fuel cells burn) it limits the amount of work muscle can do. That is why climbing and TT is not an easy ordeal even for the Giro guys. That is way we train to increase anaerobic capacity and increase anaerobic tolerance (once lactic acid production starts it is a losing battle from there).

We have several members who are looking for mentors and we're very
short of mentors. If anyone feels that they can help someone new to
triathlons or new to longer distance triathlons, please consider being
a mentor. You'll be surprised how much you can offer new triathletes.
To sign up as a mentor just follow this link:

Thanks.

It's been suggested to me a few years now to do this and this is finally the year that my schedule may actually permit it! Great IM training. Interested parties please email me offline ASAP.
we are changing the start location to the Ramble Shed since the
Boathouse is the race start for a run’bike’row-race tomorrow morning
and it’s going to be mayhem.
The ramble shed is just 200 yards along the main road in Central Park
(up cat hill and right after the hill flattens out) also on the left.
My cell is 917-864-8809. See you at 8:30 AM, bright and early, Nina

Anyone ever heard anything about either of these two sprint tris in
Maine? Pine Tree Triathlon in Orrington/Brewer, or West Kennebunk in
Kennebunk. Kind of a long shot asking, but you never know...
Also closer to home :-) how about Oyster Bay in LI or Wildwood in NJ?
Thanks!

The course is not as challenging as it would seem. The one mile swim can be tight. I did the course two years ago and they wanted people to get out after 42 minutes rather than one hour. However, if the Hudson is placid or with you, this is more than enough time. Please let me know how much time they allow for the swim this year as I may do it again next year. You then get to rest on the boat ride to New Jersey. The distinctive feature of this triathlon is that there is no pressure to change clothing or do transitions from one leg of the triathlon to the next.
The bike ride is long but the countryside is quite flat in that part of Southern New Jersey. There is an untimed 12 mile prolog ride that is not part of the official timed ride. Then you ride the rather lengthy bike leg but at least there are no hills. No one got lost on my year. However, the very end of the bike ride is through Camden and you must watch for broken glass and it is quite useful to know how to change a tire (I didn't get a flat by careful watching for glass, not speed; nevertheless, it's good to know how to change a flat and have two spare tubes.) Also, keep alert in Camden. It is a rather seedy city with drunk drivers and predators. Again, no one was bothered but this is the scoop.
The run by the Philadelphia Art Museum is an out and back 10k. Unfortunately, your legs will hurt from that long bike ride and the lactic acid build up. Again, try and go a little slower toward the end of the bike leg and this will help you.
It's does feel great to reach Philadelphia by locomotion, though, and Philadelphia has some very comfortable baths in its hotels (and great museums for the next day.)
Good luck,
Matt Boylan

Anyone doing it this year? Anyone do it in the past?
I've received the entry packet, but I haven't been able to get a sense of what the terrain will be like -- especially for the 91-mile bike course.
I know the course has been pretty hairy in years past -- I think I heard about people getting lost. Anyone have any words of advice?

For those interested in the B16/17 ride to
Nyack on Saturday, two things to add:
B16/17
means: we are doing roughly 16-17 m/hr on a flat and we will be stopping
along the way a few times for brief rests. If you’re not familiar with
the New York Cycle Clubs ratings you can go to their website at www.NYCC.org and check out their speed
test (4 loops it the park) to see how they came up with those numbers and
where you would fit.
If
it rains or streets are whet we’ll postpone to Sunday – I’ll
send out a news group e-mail if there’s any doubt or you can check
the message board on the NYCC.org website.

This past Sunday was the first TANYC/NYCC Triathlon Training Ride.
Frank Tantillo co-lead with me. The route we decided upon was an
alternate route to Nyack via Rockland Lake which included the
challenging 9W hill north of Nyack. It was a beautiful day and a
great training route.
About 10-12 people showed up even after schedule and location changes
due to confusion because of the 5-boro bike tour.
We decided to figure out the structure as the ride developed which
worked out well. Frank led the faster group and I took a few of the
slower riders.
The riders with whom I spoke seemed to have a postive experience and a
couple had never been across the GW Bridge.
Nina Froreip is leading a B-level triathlon training ride this
upcoming weekend.
Im not sure when Ill list another ride but I will try to again soon
and I hope some of you can come!

Duathlon Championships held this past weekend in Mason, OH. Steve had
the second fastest bike split in the entire field en route to winning
his age group by 1:32 over the 10K/40K/5K course.
Pyle had already qualified for Team USA by winning his AG at the Desert

I sent my bike to IM Coure d'Alene using DHL. I had no problems in either direction - I did purchase a hard case for the trip. I sent it by ground....it turned out to be much cheaper than bringing it on a plane - also, we didn't need to rent a van to hold two bike boxes at our destination - a car was just fine.
I met a woman at the race who had a problem bringing her bike on a plane. At the last minute, the airline changed the type of plane and the bike wouldn't fit on it so she was re-routed. I doubt it could ever happen flying out of NYC, but if you have to take any puddle jumpers, it could be a problem.
Good luck

Hey folks. I have a year Gold membership at Asphalt Green that I

It is transferable and has not set dates attached to it... i.e. the
membership starts when you sign up.
Email if interested.
I'm with Dean, be careful when participating in this
great ride for all of the reasons he cited. Also,
keep your group small considering how congested it'll
be.
I think that everyone should do this ride at least
once. Just try to start at the head of the pack, keep
your time at rest stops to a minimum and skip one
every now and then if you can (again, in order to have
clearer roads). Most important, keep your eyes open
and do it just to have fun--this is PURELY a
recreational event with the advantage of enough miles
to give a nice, leisurely work out. Treat it that way
and your group will enjoy the day.
