Gonna pass this time. I'm still claiming that I'm recovering from Austria, but the NYC Tri is on Sunday, so I figure this will be a good time to get off my lazy butt and race.

FYI, you might want to correct the date - Sunday July 25 (not 24), 2004
- unless I'm mistaken.

2004 Ironman USA Lake Placid closed to general entry
By: Shane Facteau July 30, 2003
LAKE PLACID, N.Y.-The 2004 Ironman USA Lake Placid triathlon closed to
general entry late Tuesday evening. More than 2200 athletes signed up
for the 2004 event, which will take place on Sunday, July 24.
The event, one of the most prestigous in the world, closed to general
entry in an amazing two days.
The Ironman USA Lake Placid triathlon, which will take place for the
sixth time in the Adirondacks in 2004, will also serve as the U.S.
Ironman Championship again in 2004.
"The popularity of Ironman USA Lake Placid is amazing," said Ironman
North America President Graham Fraser. "The event fills in two days
because of the great communities that help us play host to it, as well
as the great reputation that the event has around the world."
Athletes will be competing for 100 qualifying spots to the Ironman World
Championship held in October in Kona, Hawaii, as well as a $100,000 pro
prize purse.
While general entry to Ironman USA Lake Placid is now closed, Community
Fund Spots are available by calling the Ironman North America Athlete
Service Center at 850-235-2608.
For more information on the Ironman USA Lake Placid triathlon, log onto
www.ironmanusa.com.
I have also signed up for IM LP

One more point. LP is a beautiful area (the bike course is my fave). But it is the second or third most difficult IM race. So, if you're at a point where getting a PR is important, or if you're not so good on hills, you may want to think about a flatter course. (This year it was particularly brutal with the wind).
This is not to imply that you should choose an IM solely based on anticipated performance - fun is what it's all about. But it's one factor to consider.
The posts on this 'poll' have been very helpful. After reading and
digesting them I feel IM LP is the best candidate.
I'm going to go ahead and register for that.
Mo
My vote would be Lake Placid...(late enough to get some Spring/Summer
training yet early enough that you don't "waste" the entire summer
focused on this one event...)...
Does anyone play in or know of an ulitmate frisbee league in NYC? I
am not very good but would like to play on a team willing to
accomodate a newbie....
You guys would benefit from a late-season race so you
have all summer to cycle.
IM LP has three advantages:
1. Proximity: you can ride the course in advance, and
you'll get lots of NYC spectators.
2. Basil's doing it.
3. Lots of your other friends will do it.
IM Florida has three advantages:
1. It's VERY late
2. There's a build-up of shorter races in the same
location, so you can check out the course under race
conditions.
3. You can train with Scott Sampson
There are early-season training camps in both Lake
Placid and Clermont. People tend to like the Clermont
course better than LP. LP gets rain; Clermont gets
temps in the 90's.
Either way I will try to spectate. GO FLYERS!

I am leaning toward Wisconsin right now. I heard many good things about it from folks at Lake Placid this past weekend. My friend who has done LP 4 times says he may not ever go back now that he's done Wisconsin. He just loved the race.
I like the early September timing. The website is very detailed about the course profile (so no surprises like Austria). It looks to be moderate rolling hills on bike and run. I also like the proximity to my family in the midwest, tho that won't apply to most of you, I guess.
I am planning on going to this year's race to check it out. I know that'll be too late for most people to make your call, but I'll send a report of what I see anyway.

An IM right off a cold winter is tough (As some on this board can attest). Lake Placid is a good race and gives enough time.
Anymore IM candidates?

Hey
The advantages of training as a group were clearly evident with the
great

So in that vein does everyone want to suggest/select a common IM for

you

This is a training run. I'll be attempting 7-730 clip and can't go slower. Contact me offline of you want to join...
The calendar of activities for the remainder of the week is available by clicking on 'calendar' on the group's homepage. There will be mountain biking in Allamuchy State Park, NJ on Saturday and a hard 100+ mile bike training ride on Sunday. For the bike ride, groups will naturally separate per their speeds. Make sure you have a partner if you're concerned about that.
Yes…we’re on!!!Hopefully the weather will hold.Looking forward to riding!!!
