Hi Bill,

I was out of town this weekend.

Have you looked at Cornerstone Aquatic Center? It is a very attractive facility and makes money (there’s a link on the US Mayors Best Practices website). West Hartford, CT has mixed demographics/incomes and good fitness centers nearby. I have been there and talked with the manager, Dave from Lutro – he’s pretty entrepreneurial and does a great job running the facility.

The multipurpose pool was the original one – the competition pool was an addition. It also fits with some of the USA Swimming recommendations, though it’s deeper than their 4.5 feet. A little more deck space might be nice, but I recall bleachers for high school competitions. Also, because it was a retrofit – the zero entry configuration there leads to poor visibility at the deep end of it – I think they need one extra lifeguard because of it…

Let me know if you need any other help.

Sharon

To my hard core pool friends:

A very preliminary design was unveiled recently for a Northshore Aquatic Center (attached)
to be centrally sited in a redeveloped downtown Bothell.

We have general agreement that current public sector AC's succeed by appealing to multiple
user groups with the lazy-river and therapy, in addition to a lap pool.

A suggestion from the crowd was made, to maximize user traffic (revenue generating events),
by configuring/blending the competitive pool to affordably accommodate:

1) High School & College swim/dive specifications (dimensions/number of boards)

2) Deep water
Diving
Scuba
Water polo
Synchronized swimming

3) Shallower water
Lap/stroke competition
General swim

Rectangular?  El shape? Movable bulkhead?

Concurrent use?

Any comments, advice, identifiable existing venues that
accomplish the above would be great to know about.

Time is of the essence.

Thanks,

William (Bill) Leak
