Following is a reply to my City Hall inquiry about the City of Kenmore's current support of
Carole Ann Wald Pool at Saint Edward State Park.
Deputy Mayor Davis Baker had sent me 2 cautionary messages in recent months, about the
linkage of CAW and a prospective new Northshore Aquatic Center.
A new aquatic center is being studied early 2008, with a likely Northshore bond levy vote in
the Fall of 2008.
CAW pool is currently supported by State Parks, as owner, with interlocal contributors of
City of Kenmore, Evergreen Hospital for patient therapy, Bastyr University, and to a lesser
degree nwcenter.org which acts as current manager.
Financial interlocal involvement by Juanita/Kirkland citizens would be helpful over the longhaul.
With a Kenmore population of 20,000 the annual contribution of $25k, by Kenmore, amounts
to a tax subsidy of $1.25 per year citizen, or $5 per year per family of four. Not such a bad
investment for localized access to a year round indoor pool for an all-age, all-skills constituency.
NW Center's Ty Taylor suggested to me last summer that NW Center could provide better
programming and facility investment, if the interlocal partnerships and commitments were
longer and more stable.
As Central Puget Sound (aka Northshore) continues to grow (visit psrc.org) one can already
see and feel the pressure for additional pool facilities.
I submit that CAW Pool and a Norhshore Regional Aquatic Center ARE NOT MUTUALLY
EXCLUSIVE if the public so chooses.
Setting the CAW Pool somewhat on auto-budget is a good thing. Programming a shut-off of
CAW Pool funding, if a new aquatica center emergences is a wrong thing.
I strongly recommend that you take the time to let the City of Kenmore City Council know
your feelings ~ identify yourself as a citizen with your full name and address, at:

The Council contributes $25,000 per year toward operations at the pool. It is a year-to-year decision.

The Council contributes $25,000 per year toward operations at the pool. It is a year-to-year decision.
The 2008 contribution contract is on the 12/10 consent agenda for approval. We have recommended the contract be
changed to read the agreement will be in effect until such time as the Council does not budget the funding.

We have the contribution in our six year financial strategy but that doesn't commit future Council action.
The policy for the $25,000 annual contribution anticipated three years if the aquatic center was approved and constructed.

At that time, the City's annual contribution would cease. The aquatic center process continues and so does the annual financial support.
