Understanding Democrat Political Gymnastics
By Christopher Adamo (12/01/03)

When attempting to comprehend recent, and sometimes-surprising changes among Democrats on pivotal issues of the day, Americans should never forget that infamous red and blue map of the United States. Published in USA today just after the 2000 presidential election, the map portrayed the entire country, divided into counties, with those counties supporting George W. Bush depicted in red, while the counties where Al Gore predominated were shown in blue.

Apart from the irony of the choice of colors (any faithful representation of Gore could only have assigned him red), the stunning message of the map was instantly recognizable. With the exception of a few coastal zones and the major metropolitan areas, the entirety of the country went for Bush. Clearly Democrats sense the magnitude of the situation.

Even before the “cliff hanger” 2000 elections results rolled in, candidate Gore was already responding to polling research that didn’t bode well for the Democrats. During one presidential debate he espoused a surprising enthusiasm for hunting and outdoor gun sports... an obvious attempt to make inroads among voters who hold the Second Amendment as paramount. In the aftermath of the election, Bill Clinton unequivocally asserted that the NRA had turned the tide against Gore.

Since that time, Democrat strategists have openly expressed their alarm at having lost “NASCAR men” as a constituency group. This represents a radical departure from the nearly exclusive focus, only a few years prior, to the vaunted “soccer mom.” Unfortunately for their upcoming political fortunes, Democrats repeatedly show that they misinterpret the true nature and constitution of this voting group.

One aspiring politician who, several years prior to USA Today’s renowned map, recognized the problem and sought to deal with it, was Wyoming liberal Democrat (and Clinton enthusiast) Kathy Karpan. Realizing that antipathy towards the Second Amendment is a political “kiss of death” in Wyoming, she set about to bolster her image as an ardent gun-rights advocate by running campaign ads portraying her on a duck hunt, and by distributing bumper stickers that read “Pro-gun, Pro-Karpan.”

The bumper sticker endeavor was inadvertently undermined by some of her staunchest supporters, who frequently sported these banners on their bumpers immediately next to others that read “Clinton/Gore ’96.” Furthermore, the deceitful nature of her entire pro-gun crusade became obvious when it was revealed that her duck-hunting safari had been staged a short distance from the state capitol, in the city park. Subsequently, her campaign for U.S. Senate went down in flames.

Nevertheless, Senator John Kerry (D. MA) has taken a page out of her playbook, appearing recently on a pheasant-hunting expedition in Iowa. No doubt he hopes such visual platitudes will help win him the White House. The ruse is working as well for him as it did for Karpan.

Down in Dixie, former Vermont Governor Howard Dean sought to ingratiate himself to Southerners (or at least to his stereotypical perception of them), by publicly seeking the votes of “guys who have Confederate flag decals on their trucks,” and it is probably safe to assume, gun-racks in their rear windows. As with the two previous examples, Dean’s unabashed pandering promptly blew up in his face.

Democrat strategists have, in recent weeks, arrived at the amazing conclusion that they have lost touch with voters who consider themselves “religious.” This penchant for eventually recognizing the obvious may briefly raise hopes that one day they might even notice a danger posed to Americans by Islamic terrorists. In truth, their present concern for America’s spiritual condition recalls their dire concern, expressed throughout 1996, for the rash of “burning churches” in rural America. That concern mysteriously evaporated on the day after the ‘96 elections.

While their past record indicates a less-than-sincere regard for those issues of importance to Heartland America, another factor needs to be entered into the equation in order to understand the full extent of Democrat fraud whenever they attempt to claim the “middle ground.” Democrats know that key to successful advancement of a leftist agenda is maintaining control of the judiciary.

The courts are their “trump card,” whereby they legislate through an unelected, unaccountable, and unrepresentative governing body. Last week’s anti-Second Amendment decision by the Ninth Circuit Court, along with the Massachusetts Supreme Court’s iron-fisted implementation of gay “marriage,” inarguably spotlight the source of rampant liberalism now threatening America. Despite all their recent posturing, Democrats’ true colors and heartfelt contempt for traditional values are ultimately evident in their unwavering obstruction of worthwhile judicial nominees.

“Gymnastics Drills ... Walkover, Limber, Back Handspring”
by Karen M. Goeller  ISBN # 1-4116-1160-8
http://www.gymnasticsdrills.com/

These drills were used to produce several successful gymnasts. The drills included in this book break down the walkover, limber, and back handspring skills into easy to understand body positions and movements.

There are some drills that should help those gymnasts not yet confident enough to reach back to a bridge from standing, while other drills train the muscles necessary to perform these movements with ease.

Many of the drills and exercises can be used for flexibility training with more advanced gymnasts.

Leg Conditioning Poster

The force a gymnast must endure upon landings can be as much as 10-13 times the gymnast's body weight. Imagine how strong her lower body must be in order to endure such impact!

Some exercises specifically concentrate on the landing technique while others help develop strength. In addition to improved landings, your gymnast may utilize this new strength for the take off of many skills. The lunge prior to the round-off, the front handspring, back handsprings and any other skill that requires a quick straightening of the knee joint may become more dynamic.

Keep in mind, that these drills should be incorporated into a balanced training program, to include general and sport-specific conditioning, speed, endurance, flexibility, and of course, skills, combinations, and routines.

Walk Over\Limber Drills Poster

The necessary Tumbling Progression before Back Handspring

If performed frequently and consistently, your gymnast should feel more confident reaching back and should develop enough strength to hold their weight while in a handstand.

They should also learn how to pass through vertical more precisely. This should lead to the performance of beautiful walkovers for floor exercise and balance beam.

The stretches for hip flexors and shoulders can be used for flexibility training. Don't be surprised if dance skills such as the layback or split leap start to improve!

History of the Sport of Gymnastics

Gymanstics, as an activity sport, has been around for over 2000 years but as an competitive sport it is a little more than 100 years old. Mass and individual exhibitions were conducted by various clubs and ethnic groups such as the Turvereins and Sok ols.

While it was slow-growing in the club area, it was fast-growing sport in the Turvereins and Sokols. In 1830s, the sport of gymnastics was introduced to United States and its school systems by such immigrants as Charles Beck, Charles Follen and Franci s Lieber.

In 1881 the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) was formed, later was renamed to Bureau of the European Gymnastics Federation. This organization pioneered the international competition. The Amature Athletic Union (AAU) was formed in United Sta tes in 1883. Along with other amature spotts in United States, this organization took over the control of the gymnastics in U.S. Various "championships" started to develop by various clubs and organizations at about the same time during 1880s.

The first large-scale competition was the 1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece. There Germany have been the dominant team by almost sweeping every medal. Five countries have participapted in this event. Men's competitions included horizontal bar, parall el bars, pommel horse, rings, and vault.

The first international event following 1896 Olympics was hel in 1903 in Antwerp, Belgium. There competed gymnasts from such places as Belgium, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. This event is now considered the first World Championship. The f irst men's team competition was added and held in 1904 Olympics at St. Louis.

By ninth World Championship in 1930 at Luxembourg, the gymnastic competition included track and field events such as pole vault, broad jump, shot put, rope climb, and 100-meter dash. Following that, track and field events started to disappear from gy mnastics events, such as World Championships. They fully disappeared from the sport of gymnastics by 1954 World Championships.

During 1924 Olympics in France marked the begining of what they are today. In gymnastics, men started to compete for individual Olympic titles in each gymnastic event. The first women's gymnastic team debuted during the 1928 Olympics. The first wom en's event during 1928 Olympics was the team combined exercise, where it was dominated by Netherlands. The first U.S. women's gymnastic team competed in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany.

In 1962, rhythmic gymnastics were recognized as a sport by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). In 1963 in Budapest, Hungary, the first Rhythmic World Championship took place. It included 28 athlets from 10 countries. In 1973, the United States joined the sport of rhythmic gymnastics during the Rhythmic World Championships. During the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, the rhythmic individual all-around competition was held for the first time. At the Centenial Olympics this year in Atlanta, the rhythmic group event will be a medal-sport for the first time.

In 1970, the United States Gymnastics Federartion, now formally known as USA Gymnastics, was organized and became the govering body on this sport in the U.S. It is still exist today.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Legal Gymnastics Over an Olympic Gold Medal

October 8, 2004

Re "Tarnished Gold," editorial, Oct. 2: The avaricious, jingoistic response
of Paul Hamm and self-serving supporters like Rep. James F. Sensenbrenner Jr.
(R-Wis.) insults Olympic integrity and is an embarrassment to American
Olympians who actually earned their medals.

Hamm's childish clinging to an undeserved victory vitiates all that Olympic
gold stands for. His training, hard work and brilliant competitive performances
mean nothing if he doesn't do the right thing.

What a sorry example for younger competitors, and what a colossal public
failure of personal integrity. Paul, do yourself and America a favor: Be
gracious
and hand the gold medal to the guy who actually won it.

David Pieri

Pasadena

*

It is hard to believe that The Times is using its idle time to slam Hamm's
actions. He won the all-around gold medal in men's gymnastics simply through
playing by the rules.

Arguing that the "field-of-play" result in this case ought to be changed
because it "involves arithmetic" is rather hollow. Most field-of-play results in
sports involve arithmetic, yet those results in non-Olympic sports aren't
changed after the game and especially after the medals or trophies have already
been handed out. Why should gymnastics be conducted any differently?

Ty Reames

Long Beach

*

Has Kim Dae Eun (the other South Korean gymnast) done the "honorable" thing
and given up his silver medal in exchange for a bronze?

After all, if Yang Tae Young is promoted from third to first or even a tie
for first, then Kim finished behind two people and should be demoted to third.

John Schiermeier

Valencia

*

It amazes me that anybody thinks Paul Hamm deserves the gold medal. It's the
same as receiving a paycheck, being paid in error for hours not worked and
then being upset when the error is caught and the extra pay is taken back.

Jeffery P. Segall

Long Beach

*

You mention that the International Gymnastics Federation sent a letter to
Hamm asking him to graciously turn over his medal to the "true winner," without
noting that the head of the U.S. Olympic Committee and its chairman, Peter
Ueberroth, were themselves outraged that the request was even made.

Both noted that if a mistake is made and the competition continues without
its being corrected (the responsibility here of the South Korean coaches), no
one can say what the final result would have been, as subsequent actions can
then alter the result.

Dennis Stone

Los Angeles

*

After reading your editorial, I recalled an incident I had with my dad when I
was a teen. The two of us played the board game Scrabble from time to time,
and he would always win.

One day I beat him in a close game. He gracefully acknowledged defeat and I
was in Scrabble heaven. Since we always saved our score sheets, I looked this
one over. And there it was. He had made a mistake in scoring. I didn't win
after all.

I took a while to bask in my win, but it just didn't feel the same. I ended
up telling Dad he was still the reigning champion and I was the forever
contender. We played more over the years. And darn it, I never won.

So I am embarrassed for Paul Hamm. I would have been proud had he done the
right thing in recognizing the error and handing over the medal. He'd be an
Olympic hero to many, and he wouldn't need a cavalcade of attorneys trying to
convince the world that he won the gold medal fair and square, instead of maybe
somebody's dad simply making a mistake in scoring.

Aaaaaah, I went to the tour last night, stayed after to get
autographs and I got a picture with Jason, he hugged me and was
extremely sweaty, but it's ok! I had sweat all over me afterwards and
it was just wonderful, considering he had no shirt on. Aaaaah such
blis! I'm new here BTW, my name is Lauren - I will upload
the pictures when I get them! I'm just sooo sad I missed the pre-
show thing where you got to meet people, but I'm sure it was crazy
crowded. But if the TJ MAXX tour is coming near any of you guys, you
HAVE GOT TO GO!!!! It was really awesome, I met Carly, and Courtney
Kupets and tons of others, got their autographs and the tickets are
too expensive either! Only 20 to start, I spent 50, they were great
seats! And the pre-show is free! yay!

Hello.

My name is Becca. I'm 24 years old. I've been watching gymnastics since I was twelve and saw Kim Zmeskal win Nationals that year. It was because of her (and the sign that said, "No Experience Required") that I did gymnastics in high school. I watch the US team in 1996 in Atlanta win the Olympic Team Gold. I didn't watch the Olympics in 2000 because I was too busy adusting to a new school year but of what I did see, it didn't go too well. This past year, I was fortunate. I was working during the day and I was actually able to get NBC in on my television. I saw the Women's Team competition. And then I saw the last three rotations of the Men's AA. WOW! That was exciting. That was exciting gymnastics! My heart still pounds when I think about it. And that was my introduction to the Hamm Twins. OMG, they are adorable! I then found out the next day that Carly won the Women's AA. (I had to work that night, so I cheated and looked online.) Well, that spawned a story in my head. I'm currently working on it. I've done a lot of research and I'm still researching while I write it.

The problem I'm having right now is with the Code of Points. I know routines are issued a start value and all that. I don't care about that. The point thing is very difficult and I don't want to know. I'm not a judge. It doesn't matter to me! Now I know the elements are rated from A to Super E and the routines have to have certain elements in them. This is where I run into problems. I cannot find for the requirements for the women's routines for the 2004 Olympics anywhere! It's driving me insane. Why can't people put these things online so people like me can find them!

Okay, I'm over that. I'm going to go write now. I need to turn some of this negative energy into a postive.

Thanks for your time. I look forward to the discussions on this group.

Becca

My understanding is that Gymnastics is of course elegent and graceful
and the balance that a gymnast has is second to none but I have a
query. Im interested in knowing how many of you have been KO'ed and
or concussed while in training or competing and in which discipline.
I have heard that the Beam is quite dangerous. My interest is purely
for research into head injuries in various sports. Please respond

But dual team silvers and dual gold all arounds isn't too shaby. Team
golds would've been great, and I think it was the pressure of the
Olympics that did it. Perhaps more coahing on how to turn that
pressure into energy to work for you is needed. It's not 'no
pressure', it's 'time to roll', 'time to rock', or a miriad of other
such statemtents. But to think that way either takes a huge ego, or
an extreme lack thereof, and huberis can always catch you in the end.

Its not enough to know Gymnastics,
but to know it well.Keeping the central
ideal in full view at all times.

Of the World's Elite,USA,Romania,
and Russia all do well. But when it comes to the Prelims,Quarterfinals,Semifinals
leading to the Olympics..the cards tend to fall where they may.

Over all,the United States had a good thing going in 1996,But that was 8 years
ago.

It takes alot of eliments to get off the ground, and get the timing right.

This year Team USA(women's Gymastics)
and Men's both, just were not ready for the stiff competition of Romania and
Japan.

Marta Karoli should keep some of the veterans in the ranks,so as to improve
where they fell short of the Gold.

There's always the rest of the Olympics,
but after Athens there is Beijing in 4 years.

I wish them well

Patterson, Bhardwaj, Hatch, and Humphrey added to Women's U.S. Olympic
Team Roster
For Immediate Release July 18, 2004
Brian Eaton, USA Gymnastics, 317-829-5656, beaton@...

HUNTSVILLE, Texas The U.S. Women's Olympic Team will travel to
Athens with its strongest team in history after naming Carly
Patterson, Mohini Bhardwaj, Annia Hatch, and Terin Humphrey to the
roster on Sunday following five days of training at the Olympic Team
Selection Camp at the Women's National Team Training Center near
Huntsville, Texas.

The gymnasts join 2004 Visa U.S. co-champion Courtney Kupets and 2004
Athens Olympic Test event winner Courtney McCool, who earned automatic
berths after finishing 1-2 at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on June 27
in Anaheim, Calif.

The six gymnasts hail from five different clubs, demonstrating a
geographic spread of elite caliber athletes and represent a continuing
trend of athletes who have lived and trained at home throughout their
careers. Team alternates will be Chelsie Memmel, Tasha Schwikert and
Alysse Ishino.

Patterson's position on the team was never in doubt, as National Team
Coordinator Martha Karolyi stated following the U.S. Olympic Team
Trials that she would have named Patterson at that time had the
procedures allowed. Patterson is a two-time Visa American Cup
champion, reigning Visa U.S. co-champion, and world all-around silver
medalist. Patterson, whose image graces McDonald's cups nationwide,
trains at World Olympic Gymnastics Academy (WOGA) in Allen, Texas
under Evgeny Marchenko.

Bhardwaj, emerged in 1997 by placing third in the all-around at the
U.S. Championships before leading the UCLA Bruins to NCAA titles in
2000 and 2001. She earned a second bronze medal in the all-around at
the 2001 U.S. Championships and went on to help the USA to a World
Championships team bronze that fall. Bhardwaj then disappeared from
the gymnastics spotlight until announcing in mid-2003 that she planned
to make a run for the 2004 Olympic Team. Most recently, the vault
specialist gained significant notoriety and funding thanks to
model/actress Pamela Anderson's $20K donation to Bhardwaj's training
fund. Bhardwaj continues to live and train in Los Angeles at All
Olympians under UCLA assistant coach Chris Waller and Galina Marinova.

Hatch's nomination completes a trio of gymnastics comeback stories
that will go down in history just for making the team. First Kupets,
then Wilson for the men, and now Hatch, who tore her left ACL on Aug.
16 at the 2003 World Championships. Hatch, the team's vault specialist
and a 1996 World bronze medalist on vault for Cuba, watched as her new
U.S. teammates went on to gold and vowed to be with them in Athens.
The 26-year-old Hatch is the United States' oldest gymnastics Olympian
since Doris Fuchs Brause (32 in '64). Hatch trains at Stars Academy in
West Haven, Conn., the gym she and husband, Alan, founded in 1997.

Humphrey's low-key personality is the polar opposite of her
high-energy personality on the floor exercise, where the all-arounder
excels. Humphrey was a member of the 2003 World Championships
gold-medal Team and by virtue of competing at the 2002 Worlds as well,
makes her one of the most internationally seasoned of the team.
Humphrey, who celebrates her 18th birthday on Aug. 14 - the day before
team prelims - trains alongside McCool at Great American Gymnastics
Express (GAGE) under coaches Armine Barutyan-Fong and Al Fong.

The three-person Selection Committee was comprised of Roe Kreutzer,
chair, and chair of the Women's International Elite Committee; Martha
Karolyi, National Team Coordinator; and Larissa Fontaine, Athlete
Representative.

The six Olympians will now return home to make final preparations
before a final training camp at the end of July. The team travels to
Athens on Aug. 4 and begins competition at the 2004 Olympic Games on
Aug. 15 with Women's Competition I, which serves as the team,
all-around and individual event final qualification.

The women's U.S. Olympic Team press conference is slated for Aug. 12
at the Athens Main Press Center. For more information and complete
athlete bios, log on to www.usa-gymnastics.org/pr/.

Hi everyone,

I was really impressed with NBC's coverage of the Women's Olympic
trials. I feel I got a well rounded idea of the skill and strengths
of the women who will make the team and represent the US in Athens.

I tuned to the Men's coverage hoping for the same thing. They
focused entirely on Blaine Wilson, which was good to see him
recovering and almost back to 100%, but I didn't get an impression
on any other men who will be at training camp. Not well rounded at
all!

Any impressions?
Crystal
