“Gymnastics Drills ... Walkover, Limber, Back Handspring”
by Karen M. Goeller  ISBN # 1-4116-1160-8
http://www.gymnasticsdrills.com/

These drills were used to produce several successful gymnasts. The drills included in this book break down the walkover, limber, and back handspring skills into easy to understand body positions and movements.

There are some drills that should help those gymnasts not yet confident enough to reach back to a bridge from standing, while other drills train the muscles necessary to perform these movements with ease.

Many of the drills and exercises can be used for flexibility training with more advanced gymnasts.

That is where Karen Goeller's book, “The Most Frequently Asked Questions About Gymnastics” comes in; she has answered the questions that have already been asked over and over again by parents of young gymnasts.

With her views and ideas Ms. Goeller wishes to help the athlete and parent enjoy their gymnastics training experience to the fullest.

These drills were used to produce several successful gymnasts, including NY State Champions, Empire State Games Competitors, and National TOPS Team Athletes, among other successful athletes.

Although these drills have proven challenging to gymnasts of all levels, they are most useful to developing gymnasts in levels one through eight. Many of these drills can be used in preschool level classes too!

Consistent methods and techniques are the key to success in safety, training, and competition. From preschool to the competitive levels these drills are often the common denominator for a safe and productive training program.

Leg Conditioning Poster

The force a gymnast must endure upon landings can be as much as 10-13 times the gymnast's body weight. Imagine how strong her lower body must be in order to endure such impact!

Some exercises specifically concentrate on the landing technique while others help develop strength. In addition to improved landings, your gymnast may utilize this new strength for the take off of many skills. The lunge prior to the round-off, the front handspring, back handsprings and any other skill that requires a quick straightening of the knee joint may become more dynamic.

Keep in mind, that these drills should be incorporated into a balanced training program, to include general and sport-specific conditioning, speed, endurance, flexibility, and of course, skills, combinations, and routines.

Walk Over\Limber Drills Poster

The necessary Tumbling Progression before Back Handspring

If performed frequently and consistently, your gymnast should feel more confident reaching back and should develop enough strength to hold their weight while in a handstand.

They should also learn how to pass through vertical more precisely. This should lead to the performance of beautiful walkovers for floor exercise and balance beam.

The stretches for hip flexors and shoulders can be used for flexibility training. Don't be surprised if dance skills such as the layback or split leap start to improve!
