illington Resort will open for Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Killington will offer Blue Square (more difficult) and Black Diamond (most difficult) trails only. No Green Circle (easier) terrain will be available. Ski access to the base of K-1 will be available, however, skiers and riders are strongly encouraged to enjoy the Northridge Area and only return to K-1 base when necessary. Some walking will be required on the bottom portion of the mountain. Early season conditions exist and snowmaking operations may be in progress.

If you have purchased a season pass or Express card and do not yet have it, or have not returned your Express Acceptance of Risk form, please stop by the Sales Center at Snowshed Lodge before heading to the slopes.

Across the Atlantic at least five resorts have opened in the US on both East and
west costs. Sunday River was the first to open on the East and Mammoth Mountain
was the first of the big guns to open on the West, both offered free skiing on
opening day. They join Loveland and Arapahoe Basin in Colorado and Donner Summit
in California, which have been open a week now.

Localized, transient events such as some ski resorts opening early do not
disprove the Global Warming warnings. The residents of Tuvalu in the South
Pacific having to relocate to New Zealand due to rising sea levels; the dying of
corals due to rising ocean temperatures; the rapid melting of snow and ice in
the Arctic, Antarctic and Greenland are all major indications that the Global
Warming warnings are true.

FRISCO, Colo. (AP) — A draft report estimates it would cost about $15 billion to
build a passenger rail route from Denver into the heart of Colorado ski country.
The Summit Daily News reported Tuesday the Rocky Mountain Rail Authority
developed the cost estimate for a line connecting Denver International Airport
with the Eagle County Airport west of Vail.

The route would parallel the heavily traveled Interstate 70 and have
intermediate stops in Keystone and Frisco.

The draft report estimates it would cost another $5 billion to build a passenger
rail route connecting Fort Collins on the north to Pueblo on the south, passing
through Denver and Colorado Springs on the way.

The rail authority was created by 45 cities, counties and other groups along the
two routes.

Silverfox, Snowbird, Utah
Skiers spy this chute beneath them while riding Snowbird's tram. Its fresh
powder beckons. Many tram riders plan to find it on their skis--few do. To get
there, it takes a patient traverse over the Bird's Cirque and a descent through
a rocky nest of crags. Most skiers turn back here. Negotiate the rocks and
you've found a steep face where Wasatch Powder lasts weeks, not hours, and where
hoots from the tram's windows should propel you to ski with your utmost prowess.

Two Smokes, Silverton, Colo.
Skiers standing at the top of this chute are always with a guide--this part of
Silverton Mountain is guide-only. But even a guide won't make this 53-degree
rock funnel any less challenging. Exiting the chute, stop by the gnarled tree on
the skier's right and, feeling accomplished, watch the rest of your group
descend. Check your skis for gashes; Two Smokes' rocks are merciless.

S&S Chute, Jackson Hole, Wy.
Next door to Corbet's. Only for rock stars. Skiers contemplating this must alert
Jackson Hole Patrol and get their OK, which is rarely given. Wear a helmet.
Those cleared for takeoff must launch 35 feet to a queen-bed sized landing spot,
where a perfect left turn must be executed to launch the skier once again to a
slot of snow 20 feet below that. One small mistake and you'll become familiar
with Jackson's crack patrollers, a lift harness and their ominous orange body
sleds. If someone tells you they've skied S&S and they have a day job that
doesn't involve hucking cliffs for Teton Gravity Research films, they're almost
certainly lying.

The Palisades, Squaw Valley, Calif.
Big mountain skiing's elite play here. Stare down the Palisades' face from the
top and you're looking at one of the steepest true fall lines in North America.
Go big off a cliff--big as in 100 feet--or stick to the 50-degree-plus snow. No
matter what one does here, it won't impress hardy locals who routinely see
skiing's stars doing things that can't be called anything but stupid.

The Diving Board, Alta, Utah
More a jump than a run, this rock outcropping is famous at Alta, where skiing's
best snow (500 inches a year) and Utah's wicked mountains conspire. The flat
protruding rock juts out five feet from the top of a cliff face, launching
skiers out and down 30 feet. Not for the meek of mind or spirit, the Diving
Board sits almost directly under Alta's Supreme lift, guaranteeing an audience.
Huckers will have to ride two planks, not one; snowboarding is not permitted at
Alta, which is next door to Snowbird.

Keyhole, Alpine Meadows, Calif.
This trail sits high atop Alpine Meadows, with priceless views of the Lake Tahoe
area. The run is short, but its steepness and variable snow conditions can lead
skiers to several uncertain conclusions. Crash here and a fast snowy slide
awaits, perhaps jettisoning you off a cliff, perhaps into a fat ponderosa pine.
Keyhole is the wonderful crux of a mountain with a sustained steepness such that
a 1982 avalanche bulldozed the main lodge, killing several.

Body Bag, Crested Butte, Colo.
An ominously named run at Colorado's unofficial home to extreme skiing, Crested
Butte. Body Bag is a steep mix of trees, rocks and cliffs. Skiers must be
decisive and keep their edges straight with the fall line. Grabbing air here is
necessity, not braggadocio. And, of course, to avoid the run's namesake when
meeting one of its towering trees, strap on a helmet.

Big Couloir, Big Sky, Mont.
This long drinking straw of a chute occupies a conspicuous spot at Big Sky. It's
prominently perched above the base area below Lone Peak, which is accessed by a
small 15-man tram. The couloir can be seen by all, but few have seen it from
inside. You must clear your entrance with Big Sky Patrol. This is out-of-bounds
skiing; a partner, avalanche beacon, probe and shovel are required. Once your
card is punched and you've pushed off, there's no way out for nearly 2,000 feet.
It's sheer rock face to the right, rock face to the left, and a 42-degree sliver
of snow below. The only way out: keep skiing. Remember to ski one at a time in
avalanche country.

Corbet's Couloir, Jackson Hole, Wy.
No ski resort in North America has a chute so legendary as Corbet's Couloir in
Wyoming—a crucible where skiers go to prove their mettle (or more often, to
retreat in fear). Few emerge from the first 25 feet still on their skis. You
enter the chute's narrow, flinty mouth in free fall, dropping two stories onto a
55-degree slope. Fail to execute a hard right turn immediately, and you smash
into a face of Precambrian rock. Survive, and you then smear speed by
executing two nervy turns, exiting down a 45-degree slope as the chute fans out.
The first turn is the problem: Skiers have gained so much speed so quickly that
some panic and try to stop; this tactic is unwise at 40mph on so steep a slope.
As Steep & Deep's coaches say, "Don't stop—stand up and ski!"

By Christopher Steiner

No ski resort in North America has a chute so legendary as Corbet's Couloir in
Wyoming—a crucible where skiers go to prove their mettle (or more often, to
retreat in fear). The run is named for Barry Corbet, a mountaineer who in 1960
spotted a narrow crease of snow shaped like an upside-down funnel, high up on
the mountain now known as Jackson Hole. Said he: "Someday someone will ski
that."
In 1967 someone did—ski patroller Lonnie Ball. Today crack skiers seek to
emulate his feat. Few emerge from the first 25 feet still on their skis.

You enter the chute's narrow, flinty mouth in free fall, dropping two stories
onto a 55-degree slope. Fail to execute a hard right turn immediately, and you
smash into a face of Precambrian rock. Survive, and you then smear speed by
executing two nervy turns, exiting down a 45-degree slope as the chute fans out.

Video: http://video.forbes.com/fvn/lifestyle/ms_ski012507

The rest of Jackson Hole Mountain lives up to this teaser. The elevation drop
(4,139 feet—unmatched in the U.S.) plays out down an abrupt, serrated stretch of
the Rocky Mountains' Teton Range.

Last March a group of eight skiers braved Corbet's Couloir, having enrolled in
what Jackson Hole Mountain Resort calls its Steep & Deep Camp—a four-day
guide-assisted program meant to push participants' skills to the limit. Four of
our group, on their first attempt on Corbet's, wrecked spectacularly, their skis
and bodies pinwheeling.

The first turn is the problem: Skiers have gained so much speed so quickly that
some panic and try to stop; this tactic is unwise at 40mph on so steep a slope.
I barely survived, landing in the couloir in a cloud of snow and detritus and
almost losing control. But with a twist of my body and some luck, I held on and
emerged to plant a reasonably assertive tandem of turns, then skied out the
chute. As Steep & Deep's coaches say, "Don't stop—stand up and ski!"

Steep & Deep campers ride with a coach in pods of three or four, grouped by
skill level. All campers are already expert skiers. The camp, held four times a
year, normally culminates on its fourth day with a shot at Corbet's. Most
campers take a reconnaissance peek down the couloir's lip, then elect not to
jump. That almost a third of my camp (8 skiers out of 27) did jump was some kind
of percentage record, I was told.

The camp's cost, $860, includes lift tickets (otherwise $72 a day) and decadent
lunches served by waiters in a rustic cabin tucked far away from Jackson Hole's
crowds. These lunches, though, are where the pampering begins and ends. Camp
coaches aren't shy about shoving skiers far outside their comfort zones. "That's
why you're here, right?" says Richard Lee, head coach, to a roomful of campers
the night before skiing starts. His question elicits nervous smiles.

Jackson prides itself on making its customers squirm. An infamous warning sign
at the summit reads in part: "Our mountain is like nothing you have skied
before! It is huge. You could become lost. You could make a mistake and suffer
personal injury or death. Give this special mountain the respect it demands!"
You won't find such blunt warnings at slopes owned by publicly traded companies
like Intrawest (Copper Mountain, Whistler) or Vail Resorts (Beaver Creek,
Heavenly, Vail).

Jackson is among a very few big mountain resorts that are privately held.
(Snowbird, which belongs to Dick Bass, is another.) The owning Kemmerer family
has roots stretching back more than a century in Wyoming—to coal mining and to a
namesake town in the state's southwest corner. They bought Jackson Hole Mountain
Resort in 1992, paying a reported $18 million.

Danger isn't just accepted here, it's embraced. In 1999 Jackson opened up its
treacherous, unpatrolled back country to anyone who wants to risk it. Once you
exit the resort gates the threat of avalanche becomes real, and there's no
guarantee of rescue. You won't find open back country like this at Vail. Steep &
Deep campers spend one of their four days touring the peaks beyond the boundary
ropes with guides who teach them avalanche safety tactics and demonstrate proper
use of shovels, probes and beacons.

Even the in-bounds terrain is formidable. "The on-piste [groomed] terrain here
is by far the most challenging terrain I've been on, including off-piste in
other places," camper Stephen Gaffney, 34, a New York developer, says
approvingly. "I've never seen so many chutes."

Since the Kemmerers bought Jackson Hole, the resort has averaged $27,000 in
annual net income. The family has made $55 million in improvements, and has
raised some cash by selling off slivers of land near the resort's base. In 2006,
for example, they sold a 3.2-acre parcel in Teton Village for $10 million.

Tight cash flow became a big issue in June 2005 when Jackson announced that its
storied tram—which had whisked skiers from base to summit in just 12 minutes, 52
at a time—would be retired in September 2006 at the end of its 40-year service
life. Loss of the tram has hurt the resort's appeal, even with diehards like
James Walter, 46, a Michigan physician who has attended seven Steep & Deeps. "I
probably won't come back until they figure this out," he says.

The Kemmerers warned in 2005 that a replacement tram was not a sure thing, owing
to a $25 million price tag and to their being private owners with finite
coffers. They sought government assistance, on the premise that the tram was
vital to the region's economy. But that tactic failed. In August they unveiled a
plan to finance a new tram privately. The bigger (100-passenger) and faster tram
won't get rolling until the winter of 2008—09. Until then Corbet's seekers will
have to ride a temporary chairlift open to shearing winds and scathing, blowing
snow.

Since the early 1990s the surrounding Teton Valley has gone from spartan to
Aspenish, with million-dollar condos and celebrity ranches sprouting. A
five-bedroom home on 1 acre with ski-run access listed recently for $12.5
million. A Four Seasons hotel opened in 2003. Still, Jackson enjoys a more
frontierlike feel than its western ski resort cousins. A wide swath of federal
land plus big ranches owned by wealthy landholders keep the valley free from the
congestion that plagues Vail, Aspen and Park City, Utah. Even if sprawl does
come, skiers can take heart: A Four Seasons hot toddy won't ever make a
two-story drop feel shorter.

WEEK TRIP SIGN UP ~ July 29th

We are making a slight change to the procedure which has been used for the last couple of years for trip sign-ups, but you still will not have to be present and will not have to wait on any lines. Trip participants will be selected from those checks received by the Skimeister before Wednesday, July 29th. To do this, you may give your deposit check(s) to the Skimeister or, if you cannot come to a meeting (i.e. will be on vacation, have to work, or reside in another state), you may MAIL your deposit check(s) to the Skimeister at the following address: Jeff Meyer, P. O. Box 303, Lake Grove, NY 11755-0303. Please remember that these must be received prior to July 29th. If you bring a check to the meeting on July 29th, the drawing may have already been done. The deposit amount for all of the one-week trips will be $200 per person.

For the benefit of new members, and to remind old ones, the club's policy regarding sign-ups on trips is that every member has a right to sign up for any trip, and may also sign up one additional member (for a trip they are going on) at the same time. The slight change we are making concerns the procedure for signing up another person during the drawing for the trips. First, both members must submit a check for the amount of the deposit ($200 for a week trip). Second, each member must write the trip name and the name of the other member they wish to sign-up in the "memo section" of their check. Once one of the member's check is drawn for the trip, the other member is automatically on the trip and both deposit checks for $200 each will be deposited by the trip leader.

New laws took effect July 1, 2009 that permit persons to go into most clubs
without having to buy a membership or visitor card to obtain an alcoholic
beverage. Unfortunately, the Skidaddlers are not planning a trip to Utah this
season. C'mon Jeff, this is one helluva an excuse to go.

If you'd like to view the websites of the numerous ski resorts that we visit,
just click "Links" (to your left) and then "Ski Resort Websites". Clicking any
one of the 35 resorts will take will take you to that resort's official website.
Trail maps, mountain facts and accomodations are some of the many things that
you can discover. We've got all the resorts that were planning on visiting even
Bariloche in Argentina. Give it a try. I think you'll keep coming back.

Summer Schedule

Kick Off Hike

Saturday, May 16, 2009

Harriman State Park

We will be leaving the Route 110 Park and Ride at 7:30am sharp. You must arrange your own transportation, and bring all your own food and beverages. We will provide the guides. There will be two guided hikes to choose from, one easier hike, and one moderate hike. The easier hike is approximately 4 miles of pretty level but rocky trails, there are a few inclines. The moderate hike is approximately

6-7 miles with some mild scrambling. Both hikes offer incredible scenery and are wonderful. We will try to meet up at Pine Meadow Lake for lunch.

All hike details will be forwarded via email.

If interested please email Joy Paulsen at JyPaulsen3 @ aol.com

Directions to the trailhead: Take you favorite route to Rt 17, either via 287 or 87. Drive along Rt 17 North, pass the town of Sloatsburg, and shortly after the small shopping plaza where Dunkin Donuts is, turn right onto Seven Lakes Drive.  After about 2 miles or less, the parking lot/visitors center is on the right hand side.  If we get there late and there are no parking spots available, park on the side of the road.
