Kick Off Hike

Saturday, May 16, 2009

Harriman State Park

We will be leaving the Route 110 Park and Ride at 7:30am sharp. You must arrange your own transportation, and bring all your own food and beverages. We will provide the guides. There will be two guided hikes to choose from, one easier hike, and one moderate hike. The easier hike is approximately 4 miles of pretty level but rocky trails, there are a few inclines. The moderate hike is approximately

6-7 miles with some mild scrambling. Both hikes offer incredible scenery and are wonderful. We will try to meet up at Pine Meadow Lake for lunch.

All hike details will be forwarded via email.

If interested please email Joy Paulsen at JyPaulsen3 @ aol.com

Directions to the trailhead: Take you favorite route to Rt 17, either via 287 or 87. Drive along Rt 17 North, pass the town of Sloatsburg, and shortly after the small shopping plaza where Dunkin Donuts is, turn right onto Seven Lakes Drive.  After about 2 miles or less, the parking lot/visitors center is on the right hand side.  If we get there late and there are no parking spots available, park on the side of the road.

The 32nd Annual TD Bank Five Boro Bike Tour is this Sunday, May 3rd and a number
of Skidaddlers are planning on cycling the 42 miles from downtown Manhattan to
Staten Island. Here are directions if you're parking your car at the Staten
Island Ferry.

Take the Lower level of the Verrazano Bridge. From the Belt Pkwy get the left
lane of the ramp. Stay as far right as possible at the toll booths on Staten
Island and reset your odometer to zero as soon as you pass the tolls. Take the
Bay St exit and continue down School Road about a quarter mile then make a left
at Bay Street. Continue along Bay Street until your odometer reads 3.1 miles (in
front of the Ferry terminal). Make a left on Richmond Terrace and drive for 1.0
mile and make a right turn at the traffic signal at Jersey. St., immediatly make
another right and drive about a half mile to the first parking booth. Pay $7.00
for the day and we'll park by the pole marked C6 at 6:05 AM. We'll bike to the
ferry where there's a bike waiting area at street level so do not climb up the
stairs that you pass. The ferry leaves at 6:30 and the Bike Tour starts at 8:00.

At the end of the tour, when your in front of the ferry terminal you'll see a
blue sign saying Municipal Parking. Go down this ramp, make a left, pass the
Staten Island Yankees ballfield and back to your car at C6. After making a left
on Jersey St go straight through the traffic light. Don't turn left on Richmond
Terrace as Bay St. will be closed to cars. Continue for 1.0 mile on Jersey St
and make a right on Victory Blvd. In 1.7 miles, make a left on Clove Road (it's
under construction). After the Staten Island Expressway overpass make a left
onto the service road. Go straight at Richmond Road and Targee Street and then
back on the expressway.

Okay, skiing season is officially over and you are about to lose your looks in
your abs, quads and belly. No my friends, this doesn't have to be. You can keep
those muscles in tip top shape and keep your great physique and stamina all year
round to be ready for the steeps, bumps and powder next year.

Here's what you've got to do. Click "Database" on the left and then click "2009
Bicycle Rides". There's as list of about 37 bike rides that you can sign up for.
They're mainly in Long Island but a few are out of town. Mileages, locations and
websites are listed too.

So check it out and post a message on this forum if you're interested in doing
one of the rides. Some of us may join you.

Actress's Story Keeps Little Girl Alive

By ELIZABETH COHEN

(March 26) - Connie and Donald McCracken were watching CNN one evening last week when they learned of the tragic death of actress Natasha Richardson from a head injury. Immediately, their minds turned to their 7-year-old daughter, Morgan, who was upstairs getting ready for bed.
Two days earlier, Morgan, her father, and brother had been playing baseball in the yard of their Mentor, Ohio, home when her father hit a line drive that landed just above Morgan's left temple. A lump formed, but the McCrackens iced it down and the swelling subsided within an hour.
Skip over this content Skip over this content "For the next two days, she was perfectly fine," Donald McCracken says. "She had no symptoms. She went to school both days and got an A on her spelling test as usual. There were no issues whatsoever."
But after hearing about Richardson's death, the McCrackens wondered if Morgan was really as OK as she seemed. After all, Richardson had been talking and lucid immediately after her fatal injury.
When they went upstairs to kiss Morgan good night, she complained of a headache. "Because of Natasha, we called the pediatrician immediately. And by the time I got off the phone with him, Morgan was sobbing, her head hurt so much," McCracken says.
The McCrackens took Morgan to the emergency room at LakeWest Hospital in neighboring Willoughby, where doctors ordered a CT scan and immediately put Morgan on a helicopter to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland, with her father by her side.
"I knew it was bad when she had to get there by helicopter in six minutes, instead of the 30 minutes it would have taken to get to Cleveland in an ambulance," McCracken said.
When the helicopter arrived at Rainbow, the McCrackens were greeted by Dr. Alan Cohen, the hospital's chief of pediatric neurosurgery. He whisked Morgan into the operating room, pausing for a moment to tell McCracken that his daughter had the same injury as Richardson: an epidural hematoma.
Skip over this content

McCracken remembers standing in the emergency room, feeling like the life had just been sucked out of him. "My heart sank," he says. "It just sank."
Unlike Richardson's, Morgan's story has a happy ending. After surgery and five days in the hospital, she's at home and doing fine. "Dr. Cohen told us that if we hadn't brought her in Thursday night, she never would have woken up," McCracken says.
Now the McCrackens sometimes wonder if they waited too long to get Morgan to a doctor. After hearing about Richardson's death, many people are asking themselves the same question: Do all head injuries need attention, even ones that seem minor?
Skip over this content

"Sometimes there's a gray zone, and there's no right answer," Cohen says.
In most cases, it's pretty clear when someone needs medical attention after a head injury, says Greg Ayotte, a spokesperson for the Brain Injury Association of America and a cognitive rehabilitation therapist. "They're confused, they're agitated, or they might be dizzy or unresponsive," he says. But then there's what doctors call the "talk and die" scenario, where someone seems fine, only to die hours, or sometimes even days later.
"Talk and die" can happen with several different kinds of brain injuries. In the case of epidural hematomas, the injury Richardson and Morgan had, blood pools in the area between the lining of the brain and the skull. "Fluid is building up in a contained space, creating pressure.
Something's got to give, and that something is the brain," Ayotte says. If you don't get to the hospital to have surgery to drain the fluid, "the deterioration can happen very quickly."

Skip over this content
Here, from Ayotte and other experts, is a list of what to do after someone has suffered a head injury.
1. Be vigilant
Keep an eye on someone who has hit his head, even if the person never lost consciousness. "A lot of folks are still under the assumption that as long as you're not knocked out, you're OK, and that's not true," Ayotte says.
2. Look for dizziness, vomiting, headache and confusion
If the injured person has these signs, take him or her to an emergency room, says Dr. Jam Ghajar, clinical professor of neurological surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, and president of the Brain Trauma Foundation.
3. Look for changes in symptoms and behavior
Any sudden change, such as Morgan's headache going from mild to severe in minutes, means the person needs medical attention. For example, Ghajar says, if a person gets suddenly sleepy in the first 12 hours after a hit, it may mean the parts of the brain responsible for staying awake are experiencing pressure from a bleed.
4. Be especially wary if someone a) has been drinking alcohol, b) is on blood thinners, c) is elderly or d) is a young athlete
It's tough to distinguish brain-injured behavior from drunken behavior, so when in doubt, take the person to the hospital, Ghajar says. Also, blood thinners can turn a mild bleed into a major bleed, so be especially vigilant if the injured person is taking blood thinners such as warfarin.
He also warns people to be extra vigilant when an elderly person hits his or her head. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has information on traumatic brain injury and senior citizens. The CDC also has information on concussions in young athletes.
5. Go to a certified trauma center if you can
The American College of Surgeons has a list of certified trauma facilities; a hospital that's not a trauma center may not have a neurosurgeon on call.

The McCrackens say they look back and still can't believe Morgan suffered such a severe injury and didn't show any signs for 48 hours. "She didn't black out, her speech wasn't slurred, she wasn't dizzy, she wasn't any of the things you'd expect," McCracken says. "And you don't want to be one of those panicky parents who takes their child to the emergency room all the time."
Cohen's advice after a head injury: When in doubt, go. "It's always better to err on the side of being conservative," he says.

Hello from Jay Peak!

News from Vail, Colorado

Skier Suffers Exposure

Man left dangling upside down, pantsless after Vail lift mishap

JANUARY 6--In a bizarre incident that will surely lead to litigation (or an out-of-court settlement), a skier at Colorado's ritzy Vail resort was left dangling upside down and pantsless from a chairlift last Thursday morning. The January 1 mishap apparently occurred after the male skier, 48, and a child boarded a high-speed lift in Vail's Blue Sky Basin. It appears that the chairlift's fold-down seat was somehow not in the lowered position, which caused the man to partially fall through the resulting gap. His right ski got jammed in the ascending chairlift, and that kept him upended since his boot never dislodged from its binding. As seen in the photos on the following pages (which were snapped by fellow skiers), the Skyline Express lift was stopped shortly after the pair's botched boarding resulted in the man dangling from the lift. The exposed skier was stuck for about 15 minutes before Vail personnel backed the lift up and successfully dislodged the unidentified man from the four-seat chair. The images on page four and five were taken by Marty Odom (who can be reached at martyodm@... if you're interested in licensing the photos). In a statement released this afternoon, Vail Resorts, which operates the ski area, reported that the skier was not injured after being "suspended for approximately seven minutes." The press release did not explain how the mishap occurred, only that "the man was caught on the chair." (5 pages)

TOWER COLLAPSE
Whistler gondola maker to issue safety warning

December 18, 2008

WHISTLER, B.C. -- The company that built the gondola tower that split apart and toppled at B.C.'s Whistler Blackcomb resort will issue a North America-wide warning to other resorts about the potential hazards of similar systems.

Speaking to reporters in front of the tower that snapped on Tuesday and left 53 passengers stranded for several hours, Warren Sparks, executive vice-president of Doppelmayr CTEC, said his company would "inform all our customers about this potential hazard."

The incident has rattled residents and tourists in Whistler, the town that will host the 2010 Olympic Games in a little more than a year.

Yesterday, officials from Doppelmayr, Whistler Blackcomb and the British Columbia Safety Authority - which regulates "ropeway systems" such as chairlifts and gondolas in the province and will lead the investigation into the incident - said the tower snapped as a result of "ice jacking."

What happened to the tower was similar to what happens to a bottle of pop left too long in the freezer: Water seeped into a container designed to be watertight, froze as a result of colder-than-normal temperatures and expanded, rupturing the structure.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Jason Gill of the BCSA said investigators had checked other towers on the mountain to ensure that similar conditions were not putting other systems at risk. He said an investigation will focus on how the water got into the structure and that the agency may make recommendations as a result of its work.

There are about 300 towers in Whistler Blackcomb's extensive network of lifts and gondolas, but officials were not immediately able to say how many are built in the same way as the damaged Excalibur tower.

Doppelmayr is one of the world's leading manufacturers of gondolas, and the warning will be distributed throughout the company's international network, Mr. Sparks said in an interview. The tower was one of 26 that link the cables and cars that make up the Excalibur gondola, which ferries skiers from the resort's base partway up Blackcomb mountain, one of two peaks that comprise Whistler Blackcomb.

No cable cars detached from the line, but people in some cars on the lower portion of the two-part Excalibur line were terrified as their cars lurched, sending passengers crashing into each other and leaving one car dangling over a creek.

A dozen people were injured, with the most serious injury a broken vertebra and others escaping with cuts or bruises.

Doppelmayr built the resort's new showcase Peak 2 Peak gondola, which links the two mountains with an 11-minute ride over a valley floor, but the towers used in that system are a different design - they are coated and peppered with holes to allow water to go in and out of the structures.

Initial investigations indicate that the Excalibur failure was an isolated incident, BCSA officials said.

Investigators from the agency and Whistler Blackcomb staff spread over the slopes Tuesday night, working until after midnight to check towers that have a design similar to the one that was damaged.

Most lifts were open yesterday, except Excalibur. Crowds milled around the village square, braving bitter winds and cold, with many people shrugging off the incident of the day before.

At a news briefing yesterday, Whistler Blackcomb vice-president Doug Forseth said safety is a top concern and that the resort will work with investigators to determine what happened, and whether similar incidents can be prevented.

The resort's image is bound to be affected by the accident, especially with the Olympic spotlight focused on it, Mr. Forseth said.

"I'd prefer the story wasn't out there, but it is a reality," Mr. Forseth said.

"I can only tell you we are going to work to restore confidence where it has been damaged."

The resort has had worse disasters.

In 1995, four chairs on the Quicksilver chairlift at Whistler came off the cable, falling nine metres to the ground, killing two people and injuring eight others. That lift was subsequently replaced and Whistler Blackcomb - which formerly operated under separate ownership - worked to rebuild customer confidence, Mr. Forseth said. There have been other instances of tower failure resulting from water damage. In December, 2006, a chairlift tower at Silver Mountain Resort in Kellogg, Idaho, was damaged after water made its way inside and froze. The structural damage was discovered before the mountain opened.

John Williams, director of marketing at Silver Mountain, said in a telephone interview yesterday that since the incident, the towers are inspected at least once a year. Following the incident, the towers were sealed, holes were drilled at the base of the towers so water can drain out, and officials inspect the towers by tapping on them. Whistler Blackcomb is one of Doppelmayr's best customers when it comes to maintenance and inspection, Mr. Sparks said yesterday, responding to a question as to whether corners had been cut in maintaining equipment.

"Absolutely not," he said.

Gondola Tower Collapses at Ski ResortAP
posted: 44 MINUTES AGOcomments: 10filed under: World
NewsPrintShareText SizeAAAWHISTLER, British Columbia (Dec. 17) --
More than 50 people were evacuated from about 30 gondola cars after a
tower supporting the cables partially collapsed Tuesday at Canada's
Whistler ski resort.
Police said there were no serious injuries at the resort, which is to
host the alpine events of the 2010 winter Olympic games. Health
officials said earlier that five people had been taken to the
hospital after the mid-afternoon accident.

ski resort in Whistler, British Columbia. Health officials reported
that five people were taken to a hospital after the accident, but
police said it resulted in no serious injuries.(Note: Please disable

Graeme Bell said he was in a car that hit the ground.
"It was pretty freaky. We heard the noise of the tower collapsing and
then the cabin started shaking and down it went," Bell told CTV
television. "It hit the ground. It busted one of the windows and we
jumped out."
Bell said passengers were complaining of sore backs and one man had a
bloody head.
One of the cars hit a bus shelter, while two more were left dangling
when the tower collapsed. A crane was brought in to support the
leaning tower and fire crews worked quickly to evacuate three cars
that were the most in danger. The towers support a wire cable that
the gondola cars are attached to.
It took more than three hours to evacuate the 53 people stranded in
about 30 gondolas.
The resort said in a news release that the gondola section where the
incident took place is approximately 30 feet above the ground.
"We are very thankful that no one was seriously injured in this
incident," the release said.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Steve Wright said the passengers
who were rescued were in good spirits and were met by emergency
health services. Frigid temperatures had not been a concern because
the people were wearing protective ski clothing and were in a
sheltered environment, he added.
Amber Turnau, a spokeswoman for the resort, said the tower that
collapsed is on the lower half of the lift. She said Tower 4, the one
that went down, is not far from the starting point.
The resort just unveiled a new lift connecting the peaks of Whistler
and Blackcomb mountains, the highest in the world at 1,427 feet above
the ground. But it was not affected by Tuesday's collapse, which was
on another lift.

The Nancy Adler Memorial Enrichment Fund

The above memorial fund has been established in Nancy's memory. On March 11, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. the Fund is hosting a 1day curriculum based assembly program for the children at the BOCES school Nancy worked at for 23 years. Nancy will also be commemorated at this assembly.  The program is called `Reading Rampage' presented by ventriloquist Steve Petra and his Petra Puppets (www. petrapuppets. com).  This assembly teaches language and literacy skills and the power of words in a very fun way through an interactive musical comedy and invites student participation. This company has a well known reputation for its wonderful assemblies among many school districts already and BOCES is very excited about having the opportunity for this program.

If you wish to donate to this fund in Nancy's name, please forward your donation to:

Neither of us have any hair, but we both know "Conair"

Yes, they are same company ... perhaps not much difference between
hair dryer and 3-mile tranceivers.

Expect these are very low tech radios and likely only last a season.
But can't beat the price for two and a charger.

If you like organized bike rides, you've got to check the "2009 Bicycle
Rides" in the Database. We've been compiling a list of rides mainly in
Long Island, some in the local tristate area and even some classic
rides far away! There's ten rides listed so far but be sure to check
back as we'll be adding more as 2009 progresses.
