German tv-company ZDF will start en close the coming speedskate-season with
an international match between Germany and the Netherlands in two races
(Erfurt and Heerenveen).
This proposal was discussed with the DESG and KNSB before this season; but
without any result.
ZDF said they have sponsors and prizemoney for the riders.
Topsportcoordinator Ab Krook (KNSB) is positive about this plan, but thinks
it's difficult to schedule it.

Of course. But as you may know, DiDerre are blatantly falsifying history
in this song. It was not in the national championship, which took place
in Notodden, not Larvik, that he fell, it was in the European
championship in Grenoble. In Notodden he skated a reasonably good 5000
at 7.56,01. And wasn't it Terje Andersen who fell twice in Grenoble? Vea
only fell once if I'm hunching correctly.

I would have liked to give you full documentation (I'm a little
suspicious about that 36,8 lap too), but Alt om Skøyter 1973, where I
wrote everything down, I have unfortunately lost.

BTW- was it really a hit?

-----

In fact, I have two copies of "Alt om skøyter 1973". Unfortunately, they
provide only scanty information in terms of lap times. However, Erik Vea's
5000 m lap times from the European championships are detailed in full. At
the time the fill-in forms started with the 600 m split time (not the 200
m). Vea's lap times:

57.64 - 37.55 - 38.10 - 38.39 - 38.50 - 38.46 - 38.6 - 38.5 - 38.6 - 39.2 -
39.2 - 50.49 (fall) = 8.13.24.

It is not completely unlikely that the first full lap was skated in 36.8,
but I don't know. Anyway, it seems that Vea (placing no. 13 in the samalog)
lost about 11 seconds by falling. However, since he was 0,989 points behind
no. 12 and 2,227 points behind no. 11 in the overall classification, he
would likely have advanced only one step if he had managed to stay on his
feet.

BTW, Vea's 5000 meter pairmate in the *Norwegian* championships, Geir
Nyland, fell, but not Vea himself.

The song "Erik Vea" became a quasi-cult semi-hit (but I don't think it was
released as a single). The album on which it appears (aptly named "Gym")
peaked at no. 2 in the Norwegian Top 30 album charts, where it stayed for a
total of 11 weeks. However, it's predecessor stayed 5 weeks at the top 1
position, and altogether 39 weeks in the charts, and is one of the all time
best selling Norwegian albums.

Supplementing Jean-Francois [sorry, no cedilla at this

from http://shanidavis.org :

<< Shani finishes third overall at the US Short Track Championships

29 February 2004 Cleveland Heights OH - Shani finished third overall at the US
Short Track Championships. On Saturday, overcoming a dramatic struggle against
Rusty Smith, Shani placed second after Apolo Ohno in the 1500m. Shani, very
excited after the race, exclaims \"Doode! I haven\'t had so much fun skating
short track in a long time!\" Later that day, Shani was forth of the line in
the 500m semi. Immediately after the apex of the first turn, Shani luckilly
avoided a collision between two of the skaters in front of him. This assured
him placement in the final in which finished third. Sunday\'s 1000m semi was a
scramble and Shani was disquallified for cross tracking. This did not allow him
to complete in the final, however, he wasn\'t alarmed for he was secured a top
four spot because of the point distribution. The 3000m followed. With
confidence, Shani was able to again defeat Rusty Smith with a second place
finish. >>

ECh Inzell 1969 42,7 18 7.57,0 15 2.09,7 12 16.17,7 16 182,581 15
Two samalog world records.
An early example of roller to ice conversion for the sake of
olympicness. A very olympiocentric career. Seems he has learned to like
ice skating by and by...

Peter Reimann of SWITZERLAND
ECh Heerenveen 1971 45,48 34 9.05,7 31 2.22,5 33
An ever-present in the Swiss championships, I suppose with some
titles(??)

Erik Vea of NORWAY
ECh Grenoble 1973 46,05 19 8.13,24f 15 2.07,28 7 16.08,75 11 186,239 13
WCh Deventer 1973 43,48 12 8.02,49 10 2.17,06 16 16.22,27 12 186,530 10

Esa Puolakka of FINLAND
OG Lake Placid 1980 39,76 25 1.23,54 35
Not among his best races. Should have had a bigger international career
but for the quota system.

Hubert Kreutz of AUSTRIA
ECh Heerenveen 1990 39,39 18 7.13,39 24 2.00,61 24
Early promise, early fading. But now he's back. (Like Vea.)

Olaf Kotva of GERMANY
ECh Helsinki 1998 41,48 25 7.17,25 19 2.02,75 24
Had the hour record once, has been a listmember.

I saw some other listmembers in the lists too: Jon Gauslaa, Jürgen
Meijer, any more?

I didn't recommend them to the ISU, should I?
I always had the opinion that it should be an overallm worldcup like in skiing.

I do have the total rankings, but it is easy to calculate them yourselves.
I will send them in another mail to this list.
But it is not perfect because it does not include the allround qualities of a
skater.
Therefore also samalogs should be included. There was one at Erfurt and
Heerenveen, but these were only small/mini samalogs. I think there should also
be a big samalog. Maybe combinations of 1500/5000(3000) should be included (I
think Nils Meland calculated them in the past) but then also the 1500m and 3/5
specialist should be able to race (out of competition) on the other distance.
Also a 3/5 (women) or 5/10 (men) could be included to compensate for the one
small/mini samalog.

Notice, "my" nations ranking differs somewhat from Marcel Warnaar's, but that is
because I have laid more emphasis on the long distances by splitting them into
two discipines (which they in my opinion are).

Now they have split the 100m from the 500m, why not on the longer distances.

I like this system. Have you recommended it to the ISU? Do you also have

The IOC always said they would not expand the olympic program. According to
Dijkema this is not the case since they are saving two days with the new 500m
format (both on the same day).
How inventive!!

Than I know other possibilties for increasing the speedskating program. Why not
both genders on the same day. That will save 5 days. Enough room for a big
samalog at the end of the olympics.

Dijkema said also giving the TP an Olympic status would make it more popular.
Than this is the answer for making the big samalog more popular in the USA
a.s.o.
Give this discipline an Olympic status.

According to Jan Dijkema, ISU-board-member, the Olympic Team Persuit-event
will be skated with three skaters, but the time of the SECOND skater
crossing the line will be decisive.
Better or not? At least it will more look like cycling-persuit, with 4
cyclists of which also one may "drop".
This rule will influence of course the ideal composition of the teams - one
can think of including a sprinter for accelerating the first 3 laps - and
two ofthers to finish. But it's also rather strange that an event with a
specific format that's even NEVER been tried out gets an official Olympic
status. Has that ever happened before in the Olympic history?

I would say this has everything to do with speed skating. It's not packstyle and
the purpose is to get as quick as possible to race to the finish.
This style of competition is certainly not new, it exists for over more than 200
years and it is known as "kortebaan".
I am not especially in favour to include this discipline in championships but
that is another story.

see.

Although I'm pretty sure it has not happened a lot of times, I'm not
sure. At least there have been cases which seem similar. For example,
there are only four weight classes in Olympic taekwondo, but there are
more in World Championships. This means competitors meet opponents from
a greater weight range than normal; they may even have to change their
own body weight.

Anyway, I don't think this particular rule change for the team pursuit
will make much of a difference. Experience from cycling shows that the
absence of one skater is usually too big a disadvantage, and cannot be
made up by having a fast sprinter for just a few laps (it would help of
course when the distance's shorter, see for example the team sprint
event in cycling).

Still, the TP's sudden Olympic status of the team pursuit is a strange
happening. I guess the ISU must have been very desperate to ask the IOC
to include their new pet-project to save speed skating...

Lars, if you take a look at the draws Paul posted yesterday, you'll see
how the draw for the semi-finals depends on the first round. Off the top
my head, I think it was:

M 1st

M 2nd
O 3rd

According to the ISU report on the World Cup in Heerenveen the time
with which Martina Sablikova (Cze) won the B group 5000m (7:17.98) is
the best time ever recorded by a Junior B skater. I don't think we

I like this system. Have you recommended it to the ISU? Do you also have
beyond the top 20?

According to this in my view very objective ranking, we can group the
countries in fives:

Group A:
> 1 Netherlands 897,692 (12)
> 2 Germany 867,367 (13)
> 3 Japan 475,858 (12)
> 4 USA 333,700 (8)
> 5 Canada 296,442 (10)
It must be a while since Germany was #2 in this kind of ranking.

Group B:

> 7 Russia 222,050 (12)
> 8 Italy 121,450 (2)

It must be a while since the Netherlands were not #1 in this kind of
ranking.
