"Richmond Speed Skating Oval - all biases aside, please answer this question
honestly: Would you build on a bog or on a solid, 100% rock MOUNTAIN??? duh!
And how much did this survey cost? hmmmm....

I think that pretty much brings me up to date on hot topics...hopefully it won't
be another 7 months between entries..."

Subject: [Skate] Richmond Oval - Earthquake Proof?

In my websearch for relevant information pertinent to multiple uses for,
images, business plans, etc. of indoor LT ovals, I came across some interesting
postings on the internet about the Richmond Oval.

"A major earthquake could render Richmond's $178-million Olympic speed-skating
oval a useless hulk that would likely have to be demolished, the engineering
firm in charge of the project confirms."

"The city must begin stabilizing the soil around Southeast False Creek by
April. The work is meant to increase earthquake stability on the site. But even
a few weeks' delay could put "significant time pressures" on the Olympic
Village's strict fall 2009 completion date, according to a city report going
before council this week."

Looking at the pictures of the soil preparation, I begin to understand the
significance of the questions being raised about the choice of location for the
Vancouver Oval.

It just doesn't make sense to me that the construction firm released a report
stating significant concerns about the "soundness" of the construction, yet the
public and the City of Richmond were unaware of these issues until a news
reporting agency revealed the findings to the public.

Sure Vancouver, you may get your oval, and host your Olympic Games, but why on
earth are you building on sand and not upon the rock. The rains will come down
and the floods will come up and wash away your hopes for a fine civic venue.

Okay, maybe a little harsh, and a bit forthcoming on my behalf, but I sure
hope your decisions for the LT oval location do not wind up being "all washed
up."
