report from the north:
We have another 6" of snow. Its wet and VERY packable !

The helots just seem to be standing around looking like a bunch of "snowmen" . We seem to have 5 of these Helots...same number the enemy seems to have.
We built a fortress from the cold white ground to pull our Helots into, seems the enemy did the same.
We will cripple their ability to farm and keep supply by destroying their helots...they seem to want the same.

Two small squads of Greeks plus a few allies are gathering to defend the snowmen behind their snowforts. We've done this before, laid siege to a snowfort. Its possible to batter through the walls if you can stay long enough. Heads roll and bodies shatter from the mighty blows of Spartan weapons to the helot snowmen. We must defend our own while assaulting theirs.

Its like kids playing in the snow ;) weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

wish us luck.

(hopefully someone will take pictures :) )

Rejoice noble Cimon!

Let me see what I can do. The nice thing is that I have helmets and
armourarchives at my disposal. Ill take some pictures and see about blowing up
those sketches to a decent pattern size for you.

As for the broken spears, ill see about taking pictures tonight.

Rejoice, Noble Acastus

You remind me so much of myself circa 1992 it freaks me out...

I think the easiest thing for me would be if you take some detailed
pictures of the broken spears to remind me of their construction and
post em to me. Also, for your helm patterns, detailed pictures with a
description and maybe a ruler in the picture is the easiest way I can
think of to get those.

Thanks!

Dear sir

My name is Alkimachos and i'm writing to you on behalf of the Greek re-enactment group "Spartan Mores" based in Athens. In a recent group meeting it was decided to organise an international Hoplites historical camp in September '08 in Greece in the city of Loutraki at Korinth perfecture. The event will take place in a big Sports center with accomodation and food facilities. In general the program will include
  • training, phalanx tactics practicing, exchanging information and conferences
  • organizing Hoplite-honour ceremonies at Thermopylae, Platea, Salamis and Marathon
  • Visiting the most important archaeological sites (Akropolis, Epidaurus, Delfi, Hera's temple, etc.)
  • entertaining events (wine feasts and dinners with ancient greek food recipies, etc)
Should you and your group members be interested in participating we would like at first to know the number of persons that could participate. I will get back to you with further information of the program. Since we in Greece have the luck to be close at the very places were Hoplites stood and fought for their will to be free, it would be a great honour for the "Spartan Mores" to stand with you side by side. Our group website is www.spartiatikesmores.gr. Looking forward to your replying,

Yours trully, Alkimachos

Rejoice Sparta!!

So this reminds me of something that happened at Estrella, and I forgot to mention it on this list.

For a while now there has been a debate about what the rope is for that the spartans have on the inside of their shield.  It goes all the way around the outer rim.

Is it for making it easier to carry on your back?
Is it for putting a back-up weapon into?
Is it for hanging on the wall?
Or tying down to the top of your truck?

I think we may have finally found a good use for it......

It was during the castle battle....The Spartans held the gap with overlapping aspis.....The enemy spears began to grab and pull at our shields, and try to rip them apart...The Brotherhood was on the right flank, and our corner was getting a lot of attention....The shields began to pull away from our wall leaving openings in small gaps.....One of our boys laid down his dori next to him, and grabbed the rope with his now free hand.....The enemy was never able to manipulate his shield again.....

For defensive plays, such as turtleing up under our overlapping aspis wall, it proved to be very effective.

Just thought I would share it with you all.

I still have my original sketches. And I can produce poster paper "blanks" if

stuff. Lemme know.

if it helps, I have actually built a corinthian helm which I just need to paint or powdercoat so I know the basics and if you need apattern, I can trace around it. It's really just a basic helmet bowl with some variation on the back skirt to bring it closer to the neck. then I just put a plate around the face and lasered out the face. The only thing missing is the signature ridge on the forehead but only a certain period of greek helms had that ridge.

One of the easier things to do is trace an existing helmet.

A pair of helmets halves costs about $35 .. saves loads of labor dishing the 12g steel.

And I am not looking to buy, I met this guy with an incredible

get a good pattern I could do some great production cheap and easy.
