You guys sure know how to use up e-mail space over the dumbest things.  I know a couple of people who left the club because of excessive, unnecessary e-mail.  I joined the club to hopefully ride with other recumbent riders and to keep informed on recumbent issues.
I ride 30+ miles every weekday and longer rides on Saturday.  My problem with "getting with the club" is that I am in Royal Palm Beach and with the price of gas and time I can not justify going to Miami or Dade county to ride.  I also can not ride on Sunday mornings since my family and I attend church.  I ride the LOST ride when I can and look at the sceduled rides which seem to always be south and/or north of me.  When my buddy moves here this fall we plan on hosting some central Palm Beach County rides.
We will be busy this fall riding from Bangor, Maine to Miami, Florida.  If you want to join us for part of this ride as we enter Florida you can find our itinerary on www.biketourhaiti.com.
Not lazy, just not connected.

Back at ya,
The first ride I took with you was newyears day 2001 or 2. We went 25 miles and you must've asked me 20 times whether I was getting tired or how was I doing. Once I said that I had a sore butt and you told me that it was "recumbent butt" and everybody stopped 5 or 7 minutes for George's butt to come back. I appreciated that and that was my first ride on my new tour easy and I thought it was cake and the folks were tops and I still do.
Feet first,
Fla George

Thanks George,

I think it is always fun to ride with you. I think that you can testify to the fact that we DO NOT drop new riders and that we do NOT make new riders feel bad about the fact that they may be a bit inexperienced.

Having said that, I also make sure that a new rider does NOT attempt a ride that may be above his level because that is really a turn off. I'd say that Leisure/Moderate rides are the place to be if one is new to biking or simply prefers an easier pace.

BTW, stay tuned for details about NEXT Saturday's Leisure AND Intermediate ride!!!

Jose

To All:

Just a short, interim newsletter on miscellaneous news....

First, pasted below are two "letters" that were published in the Palm Beach Post recently. Thanks go to Bill and Steve. Bill's comments were definitely original!
*********************************************************

To make A1A perfect, tear down homes to east

In response to the July 19 letter "Residents along A1A want oceanfront preserved": The rich and selfish owners of homes along the state road in Delray Beach are obviously just that. The only unselfish way to preserve the oceanfront would be to demolish everything man-made east of A1A.

We only can imagine how beautiful the ride on A1A would be then for Florida residents and tourists. Now, there's another option to explore.

Narrower bike lanes won't pay when cyclist gets hit

About the article "Narrower bike lanes worry some" (July 16): If you want to find out the real story behind the failure of the Florida Department of Transportation and local municipalities to finance and approve proper cycling lanes or at least paved shoulders, I suggest that the answer is to "follow the money."

It always will be the pressure that the elite can bring to bear upon those who make the decisions to ensure that they get what they want. It is no surprise that those in the pricey estates along A1A consider the ocean, beaches and highway right of way to be their own property. Witness how close to the road the new estate walls are just north of Boynton Inlet, clearly on right of way, or the proliferation of concrete dots or other parking barriers along the shoulder from Delray to Palm Beach.

In short, it is time for the FDOT and city officials to be forced to do the job that the law demands. Are a few feet of shrubs and grass worth the life of a cyclist? Follow the money.

In case any of you was wondering about our Hilly Metric Ride....I

It was an AWESOME Ride! Sergio and I rode from Frost Proof to "Haines City" on State Road 17 (about 31.5 miles one way) and ended up with a total of very 63 scenic  miles. We had a wide shoulder "most" of the time, traffic was light, it was not windy and the hills didn't seem to be as hard as I had remember them.

On the way up, we saw downhill speeds as high as 36 MPH and were pleasantly surprised to see uphill speeds that were in the 17-19 MPH range. The way back was a bit harder because it got pretty hot and we thought it might be prudent to slow down a little bit. But all in all, it is a ride that I'm definitely doing again in order to get my legs ready for the 3 GAP ride in Georgia. This time it was a relatively easy ride - Sergio felt as though he could do an additional 40 miles (he's an ANIMAL)  and had it not been so hot, I would have considered doing 10-15 more  miles as my legs felt actually quite "fresh.

I apologize for saying to some of you that this  would be a hard ride because it really wasn't. Had some of you joined us, you may have been dissapointed. However,  next time, we'll do our best to deliver. So,  if you REALLY want a GOOD hill workout, just stay tuned for details about a future ride and do NOT hesitate to join us!

In fairness to Jose, I volunteered very late in the game to lead a leisure
ride this past Saturday and he suggested we do it the following weekend
given the short notice. I told Jose that I was going to ride solo and that
if anyone showed up that would be fine; I'd enjoy the company. We have
since discussed that the time of day might have been too early and decided
to push it back to 7:30 for next weekend.

If anyone wants to do a 'slow and sweaty' ride this Saturday, feel free to
join in. We'll be on the streets and back roads of Parkland, looking at
the cows and horses, with no place to go and no hurry to get there! It'll
be less than 20 miles and we'll probably average 10.5 miles per hour and
stop a couple of times to stretch our legs. No one will be dropped nor
made to feel that they are bogging us down. This ride is not about speed
it's just about getting out there. Plus, I know this great bagel joint...

Feel free to call or drop me a note if you're thinking about joining. I'll
give you directions.

Hi David,
As a ride guide of many Leisure rides (can't lead from the back)
I can assure you you will not be dropped. The reason we ride a trike
is we are so slow, cannot stay up on two wheels :-)
Our ride speed is always set by the most "Leisure" rider that day.

Hey David,

I skipped this statement. Trust me, you will NOT:
     1. Be dropped on a leisure ride
     2. Get negative feedback for showing up.

So.... I hope to see you next Saturday!. I'll post a leisure ride and an Intermediate ride tonight after I get home from my Frost Proof to Lake Wales Loops.

Jose, Mike and all,

I'm sorry you're all so disappointed at the low turnouts for some
rides. Allow me to attempt a possible explanation for the poor
turnouts of late. Last minute announcements don't help. Neither does
calling people lazy and otherwise berating people for not showing
up. That kind of talk is more of a turn-off than a motivational
inspiration, at least for me. Scheduling is always a bitch for some
people who may have other committments, responsibilities, jobs,
families, classes, etc. Some people are just not early birds like
some others.

Before my injury and this heat, I was up to 10 miles per ride. The
last time I got sick was after a ride and I was sick on and off for
more than a month with an intestinal bug that left me dehydrated,
which wasn't a good condition to be in for riding. My doctor warned
me about heat stroke on my rides and I don't do well in heat and
humidity. Between that and my heel spur, I was sidelined for most of
three months. I was trying to build up my engine too so I'd feel
confident in joining a group ride and was looking forward to that
day. At this point, I would be very concerned about being dropped on
a 20 mile leisure ride or getting negative feedback for finally
showing up for one.

Jose, I know you mean well and are just trying to drum up
participation, but you might want to try to lighten up a bit on the
berating and guilt trips. You might just get a better response. Just
a suggestion.

Take care,
David K

Mike K.  just told me that NOBODY showed up for his Leisure ride. That is really disappointing to me because I often hear complaints about our not having slow rides. But,   when we do schedule SLOW rides, these rides are often ignored.  I'm at a lost trying to understand why anyone would join a bike club and NOT want to bike?
Could it only be for the prestige?
This really makes no sense to me. Perhaps someone wiser and smarter can explain this phenomenon to me.
I guess 'bent riding is a lot like sex. Those who talk about it the most, do it the least???
At any rate, it is possible that we posted this leisure ride at the last minute and you all needed time to plan. So if you need to plan, please start planing to do a leisure ride NEXT week!   I know that in your heart YOU REALLY want to bike. You just need to figure out what  keeps you from doing what you know you ought to be doing. Is it possible that some of you are a little bit intimidated by the more experienced riders?
That big black Corsaero sure imtimated me! I remember when I was on my humble V-Rex and I got dropped like a bad habbit...
If so, please don't worry about them, and give our group a chance. When we say that NOBODY gets dropped, we MEAN JUST THAT. New riders should consider the slow rides first so they can get used to riding in a group and give themselves a chance to condition their bent muscles. When if comes to cycling, we all have to start somewhere and our next leisure ride can show you that YOU CAN DO IT!

=================================================================

On the Intermediate ride, five folks did 44 SOLID Intermediate miles (final speed average was 14.2 MPH) The folks who did show up (Gene, Nan, Mike B, Kathy M and me) appeared to have a pretty darn good time (I may be wrong though - if so, please correct me if my perception of today's ride is a bit messed up).
As Sergio would say, if they wern't on an Aero, they were only faking it...
After the ride we had brunch at Lester's, congratulated each other on a wonderful ride and recognized Mike Brown as the MOST IMPROVED RIDER I've ever seen and promised ourselves that we're going to turn into bike maniacs. Mike Brown has a mere 500 (in the last few months) miles in his bent legs and in this short time has achieved more than many of us ever do in 1-2 years.
================================================================
Tomorrow's ride is an advanced level metric in rolling hill country (Frost Proof to Lake Wales). So far it seems that only Sergio and I are the only riders but anyone who would like to experience a very DIFFERENT ride, is welcome to join us. The catch is to be at Lester's diner by 5:30 AM so that we can get to the ride start before 8 AM. Two hours of driving is needed to climb little hills but every time I did this, I thought it was worth it! The plan is to ride 31 miles one way (towards Lake Wales on Alt 27) and then ride back. The speed will be about 18-19 MPH on the flats, as fast as possible on the little climbs (9-15 MPH?).

Oh... and.... RICHARD VANES.... in case you're reading this, If GOD had wanted to keep Bents out of the hills, he would NOT have created SERGIO. But in all seriousness, I would love for you to join us and TEACH Sergio a lesson.
In this case I'm afraid I'm a student, not a teacher.
Somebody ought to and I'm not powerful enough to do just that.
I wonder if Jose on a new polished Corsa could show Sergio what a rear wheel looks like??

That was quite a recumbent pace line seen in Weston today ! It is
great to see the group braving the heat and having a good time.

Have fun in the hills, I am toast and need a day off.

OK Guys,

Mike K.  just told me that NOBODY showed up for his Leisure ride. That is really disappointing to me because I often hear complaints about our not having slow rides. But,   when we do schedule SLOW rides, these rides are often ignored.  I'm at a lost trying to understand why anyone would join a bike club and NOT want to bike? This really makes no sense to me. Perhaps someone wiser and smarter can explain this phenomenon to me.

If so, please don't worry about them, and give our group a chance. When we say that NOBODY gets dropped, we MEAN JUST THAT. New riders should consider the slow rides first so they can get used to riding in a group and give themselves a chance to condition their bent muscles. When if comes to cycling, we all have to start somewhere and our next leisure ride can show you that YOU CAN DO IT!

================================================================

Somebody ought to and I'm not powerful enough to do just that.

==================================================================
As far as next week is concerned, we're already planning to have two level rides: A leisure and an Intermediate ride. Please stay tuned for details and THANK YOU MIKE K for offering to lead another leisure ride and not giving up on our group.

=================================================================
Oh..... and I almost forgot? Would some of you like to do a late afternoon 25 mile ride around Weston? If so, you may join Mike Brown and me next Thursday. We're been meeting at Lester's diner on Thursdays at 6 PM and completing about 25 miles in 1 1/2 hours. If this sounds like something you'd like to do, give me a call or drop us a quick email.
