OK I know my good buddy Greg is going to tag me on this, BUT HEY CALL
IT SWASHBUCKLING OR WHATEVER! I rode with the A1A / Commercial DF
group for over 4 years and NEVER finished first one way, much less
both ways. BUT today recumbo's would not be denied! I do have to give
99 1/2% of the credit to Jorge from Indiana though! :-) Todays little
beasties were more into chatting or nursing hangovers, than putting up
some serious hammer speed. After the Lighthouse point bridge, instead
of going to warp they stayed in DROOP speed. I even commented how I
was SO EMBARRESSED about this. JET Jorge kept holding his hand up
basically asking where's the beef, where's that drop the hammer and
take no prisoners that ole EZ WOOF O assured everyone, would happen?
Ummmm, well maybe it will happen at the part 2 stage after the S turn
on A1A. Nope, still flat there... But then Jorge whipped to the left
and worked his way up to the front and beyond. Old EZ Bucket hooked up
behind him and we were off to races. Repeated rotating pulls had me
looking for the DF counter attack surely to be close behind, BUT
instead they were nearly out of sight, so far behind. One DFer did
manage connect with us but then with Spanish River in sight, I pressed
the pedals and zipped around and rolled to the finish, with Jorge not
far behind. Jorge YOU REALLY are FUN to ride with. Great rotations and
at times I'd get spunky and shoot to the front only to glance back and
see Jorge methodically working his way back to hook up. However this
is not a post about bragging on whooping DFer's, but instead a REAL
lesson for me, on how really efficient you can be when you have
cyclists on the same kind of bike, working together in tandem and
doing rotations. (duuuuh something DFer's have been doing all
along...) On the return side we had one of the local ultra DFers
connect with us and try and power past. Jorge appearently decided to
hang back for a short while and I decided to pull a Shari Bernhard and
stay doggedly snapping on his heels. Just before Lighthouse Point
bridge, he finally caved in, to the point I think the poor guy had to
pull over and stop. JET Jorge hooked back up and we continued back,
with a few of the DF pack flirting with an attack, only to have JET
Jorge and EZ Bucket, kick it up to 25+ to the end.
All the while we kept looking for the SFRR gang that was suppose to be
doing a New Years ride from Paytons to A1A. WHERE WERE YOU ALL? Did
you go North instead. Jorge was thinking of joining you all and with
such a FUN ride in the bag, I probably would have too. Anyway what a
GREAT start to 2005! HEY JORGE come back and do that ride with me
again, anytime!!!

Thanks Jose! Actually a long time friend of mine Chris (Formally a
Moto IT tech) is the one that has setup my domain redirection and
stuff. Yep I want to get with you on the ad stuff. What I'm thinking
is running a 2 or 3 page line ad (With YOUR HPV link or a BLOG for
people to be directed to) in the Special notices section of the Sun
Sentinel a week or 2 prior to the event. The cost really shouldn't be
that much and I'm not stressing on getting any back! It's part of my
contribution the the recumbo industry. :-)
Speaking of my BLOG I'm about to ALREADY... give it a face lift and my
initial post (Part 1) will be my Beginning association with bikes at
an early age, on through to my first recumbent. I'm hoping to have my
recumbent coming out of the closet photo ready by this weekend too.

Ummm, what specifics do you need Jorge? :-) I just got in from work at
10:30 PM and am preparing to dive under my bed for the midnight BOOM!
WELL the DF gang meet up at A1A and Commercial Blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale
and they get underway usually at 7:07 AM sharp. We head North towards
Light House Point bridge, on through the Boca Inlet Bridge and turn a
round at Spanish River and head back.
If you be fail to make that one I believe there's a SFRR ride starting
out at Payton's Bikespot shop at about 8:00 AM. I'll look for you on
the road!!!

Hey Ken,

Thanks for your BLOG.COM tip. This is something that will be useful for
folks who want to have a personal site but don't want to bother w/ html
code. You did a very good job w/ your page.

I think that you must be "redirecting your www.ezbiker.com domain to
your blog page. I also noticed that you're not only redirecting but
you're also MASKING the actual (target) URL which is really cool. I'm
using domain redirection too for GetBent.org as I'm borrowing some space
from Peyton's server till I get around to getting my own. However I'm
not masking the target and when you type http://www.getbent.org you can
see that it takes you to a http://www.bicyclespot.com/getbent. I wonder
how much it is costing you to both redirect AND mask.

On the HPV Ad, please do NOT spend much money. A $30 add is more than
enough and by the way, I'm willing to refund your expense from the
moneys raised at the event. If you go ahead w/ the ad, please use the
http://www.GetBent.Org/HPRA.htm url since it already has all of the info
and I will be updating that page as more info is available.

Thanks for your efforts in helping me promote this event. BTW, nice
bio/profile. I had NO idea you were an inventor or a disco kid.

Jose

OK have to make this short as I have an early awake tomorrow / Thurs...
I was stressing about the $$$ cost of doing up an HPV ad ($500.00+ for a
one day ad...) for the local newspaper when I got shown this BLOG stuff!
Hummm maybe a potential SFRR Group BLOG site in the future??? Well, I'll
talk about that next post... Anyway the grand ad plan I have is to run
something like "Recumbent Bicycle Race Event* www.hpv-blog.com" (This is
just a sample web address) in the special notices section of the Sun
Sentinel and then include a BLOG site address for people to go to. (Or
we could use the actual website address too) Remember the BLOG site is
""""""ALL FREE"""""" and about 2 weeks of running a 2/3 line ad would
probably run only about $30.00 or $40.00!!!!!!!!!! And YES A LOT of
people do read those small line ads!!!!!!!!! Anyone interested in
BLOGGING; here's the link: http://www.blogger.com/tour_start.g Post
Ideas, Photos, Audio & More and "No HTML" required. I'll need to get
with Hose and see if "WE" can setup an HPV BLOG site together!!! Mine
http://www.ezbiker.com took about 5 minutes to setup. :-) More

Hey Walt,
It was REALLY hard not to laugh when I noticed that you were one with the pavement. Next time please don't take Ti Joe's word to heart. When Ti Joe said that his trike was his PERSONAL AMUSEMENT PARK, he did not mean for you to turn the LOST ride into a bumper car ride or a demolition derby! Well Jose wanted to get LOST again, so he, me, and TI Joe headed up
there this morning to take a nice leisurely ride from John Stretch
Park to Clewiston and back. Aint it great having a day off!

Well the weather was a little cool, by Florida standards, and the
winds were a little brisk at times. Weather.com said it was 71° with
winds from the east at 18 mph gusting to 25. Hey Jose, I guess my 15
mph wind speed estimate while on the dike was pretty close! Though as
all three of us will attest, the wind was shifting, from NE when we
started, but from SE when we returned.

This ride was a 100% trike outing, Jose and Joe on Wizwheels, and me
on the EZ-Tadpole test trike. Since Joe can't go fast for health
reasons we made the rise leisure pace and did 44 miles at the
breakneck average speed of 9 mph. This turned out to make the outing
VERY enjoyable, as we gabbed and tossed sarcastic barbs back and
forth the entire ride.

At about the 2 mile point I decided to see just how fast I could get
this trike going on the flats, with the assistance of Jose's GPS I
got it up to 22 mph, all 50 lbs of it, but then immediately slowed
back down and waited for Joe and Jose to catch up.

We then continued on to the flood control gate about 8 miles from the
park. You have to get off the trail here and go out to US-27 to get
around the gate structure. US-27 is under construction, and was only
one lane northbound. Joe proved he is suicidal as he went right out
onto the busy highway and took that one lane. Jose and I carried our
trikes over the construction.

About 10 miles out I had a little problem. There was a lot of grass
and rock debris on the trail because they are currently doing a lot
of construction. Joe and I were side by side when in front of me
appears a foot high mound of grass and dirt piled on the trail,
Couldn't go left or I would have taken a ride into the canal,
couldn't go right as Joe was right there, and couldn't break. So as I
bellowed "Oh Shi…" I rode over the mound. Looked like a stunt out of
the old Dukes of Hazard as the left wheel went up and up and up,
until over I went. Arti Johnsoning to the right. Since Jose was in
front of us, just call him the General Lee. Just some minor scratches
to me and the trike, and a little minor mend work to the right wheel
to re-align the tracking, but more on that when Jose writes his
article on this trike. We continued on, with no more eventful
mishaps. When we got to Clewiston we stopped at the boat launch to
get a pee break and then started back. No Jose, I don't know why a
guy fishing in a shiny, noisy bass boat need to wear camouflage.

On the way back I took a try at maintaining this tank of a trike at a
higher cruise rate, 15 was a no go, couldn't keep that up for more
than 2 miles, but 12 to 13 was a breeze. Oh yeah, the wind was from
the front (the SE) so that may have affected these results, NOT. At 2
miles to go Jose took off at about 17 or 18 to get his heart rate up
before we ended back at the park. I finished this last leg at 14, and
Joe brought up the rear. Got the trike up to 26 coming down the ramp
off the levee, and all I will say is at that speed turning was an
adventure.

What a relaxing day.

Hi eileen,

although I had many years on an upright bike, my bent did take a while to be
comfortable with
- if there is a park near you, ride around in it - lots of turns, no traffic!

Have a great time.

Welcome, David! Hope you find exactly what you want in a 'bent. There
are so many to choose from, and you are doing the right thing by test
riding.

You make wonderful points. I have no problem buying some things over
the Internet or by catalog (dog supplies is one of those things, food I
buy from Pet Paradise, a store within walking distance from me and
managed by none other than Jose's son Eric - Sorry Willie!). When it
comes to a purchase like a bike, I want to a. ride it, and 2. develop a
relationship with the owner. Over the years I've spread my meager
wealth among several shops, a couple of which are no longer in business,
thanks in part to the competition around here, but in other cases they
were poorly managed, and in one case, the owner just wanted out of the
business.

I know that Atlantic Bikes has probably the best selection around, and I
also know of people who went there to test ride several bikes, several
times, and ended up buying the bike they decided on off the 'net. Sure
they saved a few bucks, but I think it's not a very nice thing to do.

Precisely. I could probably save $2 on a 15 lb bag of dog food if I
went to the big chain store PetsMart, but helping out a local retailer
is worth that tiny extra couple of bucks.

> That's my opinion on this topic. Happy New Year everyone!

Happy New Year to you, too! BTW, if you would like to try out a V-Rex
or Bacchetta Giro, let me know if you can come to the LOST ride on Jan
8. I'll bring both bikes, and you can try them out on the trail. The
V-Rex can be bought at Atlantic, and the Giro can be bought at the
Bicycle Spot.

Well, woke up to a rather unfriendly e-mail stating my HPV-Blog post

Hi Eileen,

If you're a bent neophyte, and you'r doc says it is OK to stress your body, then
I would consider these points:

1) Make sure the bike fits and is adjusted correctly (seat to pedal distance,
recline, etc.)

2) Start to ride every other day but take it easy at first. Do only a few miles
and ONLY increase the miles or time on the bike after you feel confident and
comfortable w/ whatever you're doing. When you feel it is time/time to increase
the miles, then only increase it by 10%. Doing too much too fast is a sure way
to get hurt.

3) Choose a low gear (an easy gear) for the first 500-1000 miles. Don't worry
about the speed. Just spin an easy gear. Try to spin the pedals at 80-90 rpms -
This may feel abnormal or weird but this feeling goes away and your knees will
thank you. Spinning a low gear is also a good way to work your cardio system as
your tendons and muscles get conditioned.

4) Don't be in a hurry to get fast or improve. Just ride following the above
tips and it will pay off.

5) Join one of your leisure rides and just do whatever you can. The January 8th
L.O.S.T ride might be a good way to start. We'll have a number of riders who
will be taking it really easy and will surely hang with you and give you all
kinds of tips.

Jose

Hey Greg,

Thanks for the heads up/link.  Im going to shoot for 4,000 miles in 2005. I think that 4000 is a reasonable/doable goal` even if Im out of town for more than three weeks next year.

OK have to make this short as I have an early awake tomorrow /
Thurs... I was stressing about the $$$ cost of doing up an HPV ad
($500.00+ for a one day ad...) for the local newspaper when I got
shown this BLOG stuff! Hummm maybe a potential SFRR Group BLOG site in
the future??? Well, I'll talk about that next post... Anyway the grand
ad plan I have is to run something like "Recumbent Bicycle Race Event*
www.hpv-blog.com" (This is just a sample web address) in the special
notices section of the Sun Sentinel and then include a BLOG site
address for people to go to. (Or we could use the actual website
address too) Remember the BLOG site is """"""ALL FREE"""""" and about
2 weeks of running a 2/3 line ad would probably run only about $30.00
or $40.00!!!!!!!!!! And YES A LOT of people do read those small line
ads!!!!!!!!! Anyone interested in BLOGGING; here's the link:
http://www.blogger.com/tour_start.g Post Ideas, Photos, Audio & More
and "No HTML" required.
I'll need to get with Hose and see if "WE" can setup an HPV BLOG site
together!!! Mine http://www.ezbiker.com took about 5 minutes to
setup. :-) More tomorrow!!!

Hi everyone,

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I just joined and have been
scanning the archives and have to chime in on this...

First, I'm David, a new member and just thinking about getting my
first bent as my Madwagon beach cruiser kills my bad back and knee
after only about 10 mins. So far, I've taken very brief test rides
of the EZ Sport CX and the Burley Koosah. I was able to get
comfoartable and ride the EZ almost right away, and the Burley just
took a little more getting used to. I want to saty under $1K and
will definitely consider used.

Now, as to the LBS vs. Internet thread. I was in retail for 23
years in WA and NY before moving here 2.5 years ago and becoming a
teacher. 11 of those years were spent in the car business and 3 of
them were as an Internet Sales Manager at a Dodge dealer. The
successful models for Internet sales in the car business all take
the customer from the manufacturer to the dealer. I wouldn't know
anything about bents or have any interest at all in them if it
weren't for a local shop, not a bike shop, but a local merchant who
provides great service. I'm talking about Gail's Happy Pets, run by
Gail and Willie, the place where I've been buying my dog's food for
the past two years.

Here's how I see this. The Internet and LBS are not mutually
exclusive. They compliment each other. The Internet can be a
source of research and competitive pricing and for items that you
might want to see, feel, touch and try before buying, the Internet
can be one path, along with traditional advertising and word of
mouth, to a local merchant who does provide good service.

It seems that there are several bent brands that are not available
through the Internet (the "Stone Age" distribution channel), as well
as some that are available exclusively through the Internet along
with some that are available through both channels. They can ALL be
researched on the Internet. Bents are not so popular (yet) and many
manufacturers have limited production or import capabilities that
limiting their distribution and sales channels may not be hurting
them. In addition, there is a certain amount of prestige, price
protection and maintenance of profitability with production limits
and limited availabilty. Exclusive high end luxury cars are rarely
discounted and Honda does not build more cars than it can sell,
hence they are rarely rebated or heavily discounted. Additionally,
with bents that are limted to distribution through LBS's, perhaps
the manufacturer is concerned not only with dealer loyalty and
profitability, but with customer service. For anyone who thinks
profitability is a sin, can you say Vision and E-bikes? Can you see
what's happening to Haluzak?

Now, as a newcomer, with all this retail experience, do I want to
heat up my credit cards with trial and error purchases and deal with
shipping and returns or do I want to deal with a reputable dealer
who is knowledgeable, helpful, not pushy and who will let me test
ride several bikes and who will stand behind and service what he
sells? We are talking about bikes here, not books, not CDs, not
Dell computers. And I am thankful that I purchased in-home service
contracts on the two Dells I bought over the Internet or else the
laptop on which I'm typing this would have become a paperweight some
time ago. Each time I need service on them, I'm not happy with the
level of communication I've had with Rajeev and his countrymen who
work for $600 a month in Andra Pradesh, India, yet I understand the
economics of outsourcing and I understand that Rajeev's $600 a month
is ten times more than he could have made without Dell providong him
a job. Yet this is about as close as an Internet business model
comes to giving me storefront service. I was much happier that
Sears let me exchange the washer/dryer I bought when we moved here
because they really didn't fit our laundry center, and that I bought
service contracts on my electronics and appliances that get me
yearly maintenance and replacements for things my family breaks like
remotes and refrigerator door handles. I'm also happy that I can go
back to the store and get the advice of the same sales people who
sold me the stuff I now have when I'm considering a new purchase.

Can relationships be established through Internet sales and service
channels? Yes. Are they the same? No. Catalog mail order is one
step less personal that the Internet. Phone order is one step more
personal and often I'll contact an Internet merchant by phone
because the voice at the end of the line satisfies my auditory need
for that personal touch. Face to face is two to three steps more
personal than the Internet because everything moves from the virtual
realm to the real (material) realm.

Look, I could probably order my dog's food over the Internet and it
might even cost a little less, although shipping and handling
charges can often more than offset any savings. I might do that if
my dog's brand of food wasn't easily availble from a local
merchant. But then I would miss out on meeting the customers and
dogs at Willie and Gail's. I would miss out on learning which local
Mexican restaurants are good. I would miss out on learning about
bent bike and this group. Do I want to give that up? No.

That's my opinion on this topic. Happy New Year everyone!

Well... it depends on WHICH ONE Sergio is talking about. But Sergio meant to
write The Bicycle Spot (almost right but heck we don't care about two incorrect
letters)

The BICYCLE SPOT is located ON West Dixie Hwy, just NORTH of Commercial.

Jose Who Understands that Sergio's brain is as oxygen depleted as mine but this
because the 02 is put to better use by our legs (At least the legs have
functional cells)

Well technically...

We're both right.

The southern end is kind of diamond shaped, siting on it's point, and
US 27 meets up with the lake at it's southern-most point. and you
have to go northwest to get to John Stretch.
But at the same time it is way south of the lake's north-south
divider.
