I neglected to say Sawgrass Recreation Center is about twenty miles from where I live.

So lets do the math again:

46+20 = 66 Miles

66*1.6 =105.6 Kilometers

If you measure from where you live the math will come out different. When I rode to South Bay and back my mileage was 118 . Thats about 58 miles each way.

I find that where one starts riding affects the total distance. If one starts closer to the finish they will find they have less total kilometerage, but they can still divide by 1.6 for the total mileage.

>Well... why don't you go ahead and schedule a ride?

At the moment I feel the need to exorcise some demons and abate some fears. I feel that issues of safety, group riding, and bike handling skills on the road must discussed before any    Trans-Everglade endeavor takes place.

>Post the start time, start location, speed, etc.

I would favor a multi speed type event so riders of all ability levels could participate!

Take a vacation in Oregon and do the Recumbent Retreat. Here's the
link with information:

Recumbent Retreat. Fort Stevens, OR
http://www.recumbentretreat.org/

I'm camping there Friday and Saturday night, attending Friday

If you feel like a last minute vacation and a weekend with recumbos,
I can put you up while you're in Oregon and we can camp together.

Yes, I know you are in NY by now.  Just looking at the map, it appears to be downhill all the way from Portsmouth to Boca Raton.  Why not?  Now that you have everything under control, go for it.

Hello everyone!!  I cannot believe how far we have come- it has truely hit me today!!!  Most normal people do  cross country travel in a car and I have chosen to ride my bike- WOW!  I really am a bit crazy!!  Yes, it has finally hit me!!  I feel very fortunate to have this experience- and I am really enjoying the group I am with- what a great bunch of special people!!  Alot of them from California-  I shall go visit a few of them on the West Coast one day!!

This morning was very, very exciting!!  We crossed a huge bridge (will find out the name of the bridge soon)  from Port Huron, MI to London, Ontario!!  All 48 of us rode in a peleton across the bridge together-  They closed the bridge for us!!  I repeat - they closed the bridge just for us to ride across in our peleton!!  So very cool!!!!  We all continued to ride together after the bridge for a while- it was really nice to see everyone in one group together- usually we are pretty spread out!!!  The Canadians have been very nice and friendly to us and not too many problems with customs-

Tomorrow we go from London, Ontario to Brantford, Ontario.  Then Niagara Falls the next day for 2 nites- and one long anticipated rest day there too!!!  Hope all is well with everyone!!  And remember everyone has the "Power Within" to achieve their dreams!!  So live each day as if it were your last and appreciate all the special people in your life!!!  I really appreciate each and every one of you in my life- You are ALL very SPECIAL to me!!!!!!  Keepin' the pedals turnin' and burnin'- Best Wishes,   Carrie Ann

Thanks so much for your support Joe-  I am taking each day as one day at a time- but, we are almost there!!  On the final stretch now-  Please give Sherrie my best-  I know she has the power within for her recovery-  I am sure she has learned lately about just how strong she is on the inside as well as the outside- tell her to keep up the hard work and before she knows it that cane will be no more!!               Hi Carrie Ann, I have been following your journey very closely. I read everyday about the excitement and the things your group is doing. I do find it amazing that anyone WANTS to ride across AMERICA, however after reading about your daily treks I find it very interesting and I have to wonder if I could make the trip myself. OH WELL..only time will tell. I hope your foot is better after hearing how that old bag ran it over..LMAO

My wife has graduated to a cane as of yesterday, however the doctor told us that she pulvarized the top of her tibia and it was like putting a jig saw puzzel back together again. She has 2 plates and 8 screws holding it all in place..ouch ouch ouch. One day she will ride again...she say's. We wish you the best of luck in the rest of your journey and look forward to seeing you when you return.

Sincerely,
Joe and Sherri Abrams AKA Ti Joe and Sherri Trikster...

Hello everyone- just a quick note to say hello-  I have been very busy- it seems that every minute of the day is taken- I am either on my bike riding- or checking in another hotel- eating- doing laundry- or sleeping-  I have been pedaling my brains out and we are on the final stretch!!!!  The mood of the group is very enthusiastic and we look forward to having 10 new riders join us for the last leg of the trip which will be from Niagara Falls to Portsmouth, NH.

Wisconsin is a very beautiful state with pristine farmland and lots of chasing dogs!!!!  We had a great ride on the ferry from Manitowoc, WI to Ludington, MI as we ferried across Lake Michigan.  The water was so calm- like a pond and the sun shining all day - a great crossing for everyone!!

We are almost across Michigan now and in one more day we will be entering Ontario, Canada!!!  So I shall get out my passport!!!  I am reflecting lately on the journey behind me and the journey ahead also- I get teary eyed when I think of how soon I shall be looking at the Atlantic Ocean in Portsmouth, NH!!!!  We have come such a long way- I cannot believe it is almost over-  I have made some amazing friends that I will have for a lifetime!!!  I have also learned "not to sweat the small stuff" and to "go with the flow" alot more than I used too!!!  I also have learned that I can achieve great things just one day and one pedal stroke at a time!!!!

Hope everything is wonderful in your lives and God is smiling down on you!!!  Would be great to get some e-mails from you all!!
Best Wishes- and I am turning and burning those pedals on our final leg here-    Carrie Ann

46 plus 46 = 62? Hmmmmm..... Ok... I guess that 's close enough.... Well... why don't you go ahead and schedule a ride? Post the start time, start location, speed, etc. You just never know who's gonna show up.

While every one is revving for the varoom "Invasion" of Pinellas trail .  I know that my comments on Sundays ride will not go unnoticed.

Lester's  to  Miramar Century

The ride was great; a good route plus good people and good weather equals a one hundred percent enjoyable cycling experience .
I parted from the main group and headed south on Bonaventure. Actually I was a bit worn out from trying to maintain the vicious Bachetta pace.  My theory is that the wizards at Bachetta have found a way to suspend the laws of Physics!  With careful observation of the spinning wheel one can detect a total absence of spokes.  This reduces aerodynamic drag and rider fatigue at the higher speeds.

Back   to the  Armadillo

While wending the way homeward on the lushly landscaped Bonaventure road I happened to notice an Armadillo carcass.  Rather than focusing on the roadkill aspect of the event I was surprised to see evidence of Armadillo in Weston. I am aware that Armadillos inhabit the Okeechobee area.
Maybe this was some sort of sign or message.

The  Okeechobee  Connection

Without whipping out a calculator I would say that the Sunday Century equals one half the way around Okeechobee.  According to an Air-boat Capitan at Sawgrass Recreation  Center on US 27 Okeechobee is only forty six miles up the road.  So a ride to Okeechobee would be like a Metric Century more or less. I have already ridden  from where I live to South Bay, a town on the shores of Okeechobee.  I rode on a Sunday and  actually enjoyed the route immensely.

Cycling,  Activism,  Advocacy, Routes, and Roadways

Many people would relegate bicycle usage to parks, paths, sidewalks, and special trails shared with horses, skaters, pedestrians and dogs. If legal cycling routes remain uncycled then the existence of such routes may be deemed unnecessary.

Safety

Obviously places where cars are banned can be great for riding.
Bicycle-automobile crashes occur most often at intersections.
Divided highways are safer than undivided highways.
Paved shoulders are safer than unpaved shoulders.

Fear and Complacency

Fear is a demon which is magnified in our mind.  If we concentrate on the the object of our fear it grows in dimension.
On the other hand a false sense of security can actually endanger a rider.
A safe road can become dangerous.

Sucked  Under a Semi

This common fear is a total misconception, an urban myth, a Fata Morgana.  A trucks draft is like a bikes draft, only bigger.  There is no gaping vacuum under moving trucks. The best draft is behind the truck, but there is no vacuum and no sucking.  No way!
I have  heard that one a few times and it is impossible!
A semi passing is an opportunity to speed up and take advantage of the draft by about two gears.
No sucking.
Sorry.

Hey Walt,

A 16 MPH metric on a Tailwind is something I'd be proud of. I don't think I was ever able to make the Tailwind go that fast. Had you had a "faster" bike, both Sergio and I would be heading for a certain spider hole.

Jose/Mike,

Thanks for the complements, but lets set one thing straight...

I did get dropped. After bonking at 40-miles I just couldn't keep up
with you guys anymore. However, after a banana, some water and 5-
minutes rest, I got enough energy back to finish the entire run at a
little slower speed. Yep at least I made MY personal best with a 16
mph average overall.

Then there's Sergio, My first sighting of him was at 51 Miles when
there was a blur going in the other direction. My second sighting was
at Pine Island and 84. The light turned green, I started pedalling,
and then there was a rush of wind as Sergio, with Jose, and the
others went blazing by at 23+. The agony of not only being dropped
but then being PASSED WHEN THEY TOOK AN EXTRA SHORT LOOP!

I should've known I was in trouble from the start when I'm sitting at
Lester's and nothing but Bacchetta's kept showing up. Thankfully Mike
with his Street Machine and Andy with his V-Rex didn't leave me to
battle the Killer B's by myself. ;-)

But the final result was that I had fun and enjoyed the company of
ALL that rode. Hmm, 16 MPH metric on my Tailwind... Yeah I guess I
did do good after all. Ok, back to the Ben-Gay.

It was a great ride! Definitely the longest and fastest. I did sleep for a few hours this afternoon dreaming of all the scenery we went by. We covered a lot in the metric. As long as my eyesight holds up I'll fell I never got dropped! It is amazing to me today to see after 50 miles you all take off at over 20. 17 was just right for me at that point. I'll keeping training and taking those ass kickings, but one day, one day. I do like Sergio's nutrition plan. Jose keeps talking about eating right. But if 3 pancakes before the ride and a danish and cocoa after works for Sergio, there must be something to it.
Thanks for the ride all. All of you even those that missed today are great people. Walt really did excellent.

Thank YOU Walt, Richard, Andy, Mike, Dennis and Karen for showing up! Sergio met us after we had done about 50 miles and "forced us" to ride a little faster.

The day was perfect for cycling and everyone did GREAT. I actually did try to hold the speed down but I guess these guys were totally intoxicated with adrenalin or some arcane drug. The speed was almost always way above 17 MPH and included very long 20-22 MPH "stages".

A special word of Congrats in in order for Walt and Mike. I think this was probably their
longest and fastest ride and a special word of thanks to all others for NOT DROPPING ME!

Hey Andy, if you're reading this, I don't think you need the roto cranks after all. You did just fine with your conventional setup, the 199 pound luggage, 3 gallons of water and the snow tires!

My apologies for any confusion. Let us dabble a bit in mathematical matters and prevent quantitative quibbles from creating a Algebraic Quagmire!

Let the distance around Okeechobee equal O.

Therefore

1/2 *O = 1/2 O

(1/2*O)+(1/2*O) =1 O

In other words the math proves that we are not really going anywhere. Just in case the letter O is confused  with zero the above equation works even better with the letter X .

OK?

So Shari Writes:

>Now, I'm not a math whiz, but if someone rides halfway and then
>returns,
>wouldn't that be the SAME DISTANCE AS GOING ALL THE WAY AROUND?  And if
>I
>remember my grade school fractions, 2/3 (the way out) + 2/3 (the way
>back)
>is... uh... 4/3, or FARTHER THAN GOING AROUND ONCE!

The math supports Shari's theory. However I ask is it FARTHER? or FURTHER?.

If its further or farther it still is the same ride because it ends at the beginning. Of course the overall distance becomes variable.

If group A circulates in a counterclockwise direction for two thirds the way around and group B circulates clockwise one third of the way group,  and both return in the opposite direction of travel.  A will have traveled the equivalent of four thirds around the while group B will have traveled two thirds of the way around the lake. But nobody will have actually gone completely around the lake. Personally  I would like to go round the lake once maybe.

I would like to emphasize  the idea that our rides can be designed to satisfy the requirements both the crazed zommity-zoom-zoomers and the people who reap the joys of a relaxed pace.  As long as they go fast enough to avoid being eaten by the Armadillos.  It should be a great day.

Okeechobee Andy Jacoby

Hey Ya'll:

I just checked my messages and found out there's a nice ride going on tomorrow.  I recently got a new job painting and haven't gotten around to doing any riding.  Anyone who's going to be attending, please let me know coordinates, time & distance so that I can make sure I get a nice ride out...the ache is in my arms and my legs should work perfectly fine.

By the way, the time is now 5:25 PM EDST.  Whomever comes across this request & sends me something throughout the evening would be doing a gargantuan favor to a fellow rider.

Happy Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!
