To be absolutely honest, I kind of suspected it but.... well... I
just couldn't bet my life on it. On the surface, he appeared to be
the typical macho Strada rider, comfortable with his manly "no hair-
do", smiling behind his white goatee, always showing a determination
to grab the bull by the horse, taming a low racer or appearing to
handle his high BB demon with the skill of a dare devil. Oh yeah, he
skillfully managed to fool most of us but he did not fool me! Perhaps
it was his "I-would-rather-fight" demeanor, something that worked
quite well. After all, who would risk fighting with Sergio? Not me!!!
This guy is strong as a mule so it was easier to view Sergio just the
way he wanted us to see him.

But at our last bent event, he decided to come clean and reveal to me
his dark secret. He just couldn't live with this anymore and he
really didn't care if all of us in our group found him out. And so it
is my very difficult duty to share his secret with our bent community.

I will admit that I faked being surprised when Sergio let out the big
news. You see, I just could not bear to act otherwise in front of
Sergio. After all, he is my riding buddy and, well… at the time; I
just didn't know what to say or do. I then thought that we bent
riders are supposed to be tolerant and heck... when you need to come
out of the closet, you need to come out of the closet. So I told
Sergio to go ahead and tell me what it was that was bothering him.
From the strain on Sergio's face I could tell that this was something
important and it was something that was really bothering him. So I
readied myself for his confession and almost fell off my bike when he
told me that, after all these years, he has come to the conclusion
that he is a LOW BOTTOM BRACKET kinda guy!

So.. the next time you see Sergio on the road, his feet may not be up
in the air but might just be orbiting around the low BB area of a
Tour Easy, where his heart and soul belong.

Sergio, if you're reading this, don't worry. The members of this
group will love you just the same.

Sergio's idea sounds interesting. It involves a one day 200 mile ride
from Lester's diner to Stuart and back. It means leaving REALLY
early - maybe 6 AM, being READY to maintain an average speed of NO
LESS than 15-16 MPH (the only way to cover 200 miles before it gets
to late) and being READY to take care of ourselves in the event we
find ourselves riding on our own. In a way, Sergio's idea is a true
Brevet and a true adventure.

For this to work,we would need to come up with a good route -
accurate cue sheets and a date that is far enough away to give us a
chance to regain our fitness level.

By the way, this 200 miler is in Sergio's mind a "training ride" for
what he really wants to do which is more than 300 miles in 2 days.

Jose

Sergio and I will be discussing this crazy idea and will post details
later on this week.

While I don't think I have reached the fitness level to complete a
one day 200 mile ride, this does sound interesting. It would have to
be on a day that had a couple of recovery days to follow ;-)

Jose, I will be glad to help make accurate cue sheets and try to gain
(not regain) the necessary fitness level.

By the way, this 200 miler is in Sergio's mind a "training ride" for

A two hundred miler is a very tough ride no matter how you look at it. A relatively fit cyclist would probably need a good 3 months of serious training to do this ride comfortably. This means LOTS of miles on the bike. A less fit cyclist might finish it but he won't enjoy it and I think would risk unecessary injury.

I think that this will be an option once the finish the bike lanes that they're planning. 300 miles in two days is a bit crazy but then again... so is Sergio.

P.S. JOSE, SO WHAT'S WRONG WITH LOW BB'S!!!

Nothing but if Sergio gets one, then everything cuz he will leave us all in the dust and make us look bad.

Words like "high racer" and "dual 650's" tempt us

Well group- I made it to another state- we are officially in Wyoming!!!  I climbed 2 peaks today!!!  Today was one of the hardest days we will have on the entire tour-  I climbed and I climbed and I climbed some more - I guess that is to be expected when cycling through the Teton Mountain Range-  The beauty of this area is beyond words!  As we crossed the Snake River we climbed to the 1st summit called Pine Creek Pass- elevation 6,660 feet!   Then the party really started as we headed up the Teton Pass - elevation 8,431 feet!!!!!  I climbed grades of 10% here and when it got to 12% on the last mile or two from the top I had to walk it.  (many people had to walk this section)  I was so very proud of myself!!!  I did not think I could climb that high of a grade!!!  My legs felt like wet noodles!!!  So I will give myself some bragging rights today!!!  Thank you all for your great e-mails of support!!  I really appreciate each and every one of them- as you all are very dear and special people to me!!!!  God Bless,  Carrie Ann

Hello everyone-  today seemed harder than yesterday! (88 miles and very high elevations) I did not expect the climbing we did today-  As we rolled out of Jackson this morning, we entered Teton National Park.  SO AMAZING- SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!  Everyone took soooooo many pictures today-  the massive peaks of the Tetons are so huge -they make me feel so very small!   There was a brutal climb today and the elevation was even higher than yesterday- 9,578 feet!!!  I rolled out of the rest stop at 34 miles and began to climb 6% grade-  well the altitude just hit me hard-  I had to keep stopping to catch my breath - it felt like I could'nt get me heart rate down-  I finally gave up and had one of the SAG vehicles give me a bump up to the top on the last few miles- my legs had nothing left in them and my lungs were burning!!!  But was a spectacular 30 mile decent all the way into Dubois!!!  and tomorrow will be mostly decent too!!!  Yeah!  God is looking down on us and know how tired we are!!!  I had to learn how to handle my bike in a pretty strong cross wind on my decent today- I have bladed spokes on my wheelset and they seem to catch the wind a bit-  so tomorrow I shall also practice so good bike handling skills!!!  Well- life on the road is not all fun and games everyday-  We wake up at 5am - sometimes as early as 4am to get our bags packed again- load them in the luggage truck eat breakfast- fill water bottles- pump up tires - suit up - and roll out!!!!  Its not the 88 mile day that is tiring- it is the 88 mile day followed by the 100 mile day followed by the 78 mile day - etc.  etc.  etc.   You have to also be very organized living out of a duffle bag-  As soon as my ride is finished each day it is- bringing your luggage and bike -ect to your new room when you check in -  then I have to hand wash all my laundry (this is because there is always a long wait for the washing machine- there is 58 of us ya know!)  then shower - unpack - lay out stuff for next day- wash out camel back and water bottles- clean bike- and dinner and route meeting is usually at 5:30 - 6pm- then e-mails- then lights out !! Next day start all over again- kinda turns into a job after a while- as you have to keep a schedule!!  So I shall keep the pedals turnin and burnin and make you all proud!!!!  Hope God is smiling down on all of you right now-  Best,  Carrie Ann

Whoa! Baby!

I was thinking of a rather mellow ride to
Lake Okeechobee, A ride accessible to all of our varied ability
groups.

The distance from Griffin Road to Lake Okeechobee is only about fifty
miles. If a rider started at six o'clock in the morning and averaged
ten miles an hour including rest stops the rider would hit the shores
of the big "O" before noon. Anybody could do it. All one needs is
sunblock and lots of water; and maybe a snack at ten AM. Oh yeah I
almost forgot to mention: a nice comfortable bike to sit on during the
breaks is recommended.

I am not adverse to riding to Stuart. It sounds like fun!
Actually I would be pickled tink to cruise the asphalt with you speed
crazed lunatics. You need someone to remind you to slow down before you
melt your tires.

I just want to make it possible for souls of lesser mileage to enjoy
the passage of an slow easy fun fifty miler. It is called
cyclotourisim. You ride 50,60 ,70 miles then you get a room or pitch a
tent. You eat, you sleep, and the next day you continue on. The most
important thing is to enjoy the ride.

Of course there are always people who want to turn 50 miles into 200
miles, you can never have enough of a good thing.
Then when your friends involve you in 200 miles of Mad Hatter Pedaling
you might be fool enough to join them too. The truth be told it is
neither how far or how fast, but how much enjoyment and how much fun
that is the measure of success in recreational bicycling.

WOW! That is NEWS! For the record (As a former Contented TE, GRR
Polished Alum EZ 1 & GRR Ti rider / owner - 10,000+ miles) I
congratulate Sergio for finding his ULTIMATE TRUE enjoyable ride.
Admittedly, I TOO miss being able to just leasurly hop on and glide
around like a nice long streeeeetch limo, like I use to on my Easy
Racer Bikes. NO I'm not dis-enchanted with my Aero, BUT I do find I
have to be a little more attentive to my surroundings and specific
cycling methods, due partly to how laid back I am. On The ER bikes
you sit more upright and hince the easy going style of body
posistion just adds to the leasurly FUN ride. Being able to
IMMEDIATELY place both your feet on the ground and ease of starting
off on inclines, is another "PLUS" for low BB bikes. And make NO
Mistake, TE's and GRR's ARE FAST BIKES and with a POWER HOUSE rider
like Sergio, we all may be seeing a SCREAMING B 52 closing on the
B's including this Bench Warming one...
NOW as far as High Racers or duel 26 bikes being associated with the
DARK SIDE... Ummmmmmmm no. DF's in my mind, are STILL considered to
be the E... empire or DARK Side of cycling.

Allow me to add my kudos to Arthur and Rea. First of all, it was great just
getting everyone together and meeting at least one new guy (Steve).
Secondly, the company and food were fabulous. Thirdly, many, many thanks to
Arthur for rescuing Jeff and me and our errant tandem.

I apologize for ducking out so early - you know I love a party - but I had
had a rough couple of days (especially that bone marrow test), and I was
just overwhelmed with fatigue. I slept the whole ride home (luckily, Jeff
was driving :-)), and slept for 6 hours when I got home (I think I called
Arthur to thank him and Rea but it's a dim memory).

I felt great the next day, though, and rode 30 miles, the most I've ridden
in over a month.

I would think that after the B.A.F. and some of the two lane -no
shoulder-55 MPH -truck route -sections that Route 27 a divided -paved
shoulder- road way would seem quite tame in comparison . The best
sections on the BAF were identical in roadway design to Route 27.

I am not advocating complacency but attempting to smooth some nerves.

It is probably safest to stay home and ride a stationary bike but the
dynamic pull of the open road offers special rewards to those willing
to venture out with appropriate caution and forethought.

Here are some different fish to fry!

After the meeting two weeks ago for The Broward Greenways Project I
happened to mention to Shari some cycling routes I had traveled from
Pembroke Pines to the Beach. Shari said I should make group ride of it.

Johnson Street:
==============

Johnson Street runs from C.B. Smith Park on Flamingo in the Pines to
the Intracostal park in Hollywood .Going from Flamingo east the road
narrows to two lanes by the Pines Dog Park. The shoulders are unpaved
but the speed limit is 30MPH so traffic is local and there are no
historic friction issues between residents and bicycle advocates.

The Tidal Marsh:
================
The areas east of the Hollywood neighborhoods are part of a wetlands
habitat. There are neighborhood streets with houses on one side and
Tidal Marsh on the other running from Johnson Street all the way to
Dania Beach Boulevard and to the Dania Cut-Off Canal.

On Sheridan Street is the Anne Colbe Park, an attraction for Bird
lovers, Swamp lovers, Fish lovers, and hopeless nature fanatics. The
park is endowed with miles of trails elevated above the mangrove swamp.
There is another whole park dedicated to Kayakers.

The Beach:
==========
There is a bicycle path along the beach. It is OK but some hours are
Off limits to Bicycles depending on the season. There are public
restrooms and eatery beach-a-raunts. A nature lover will identify fine
examples of the Shirtless Goon who has no fear of UV radiation. The
Shirtless Goons Counterpart, The Thongette is known to maintain an even
more fervent irreverence to Solar danger. Often these creatures are
sighted wearing shoes with little wheels called Roller Blades,They
propel themselves backwards along the bike path until they bump into
each other. That may be how they mate. Bicyclists (especially SWB
recumbents)must avoid backwards RollerBladers at all costs ; disturbing
mating rituals is not recommended.

If the bicycle path is out of season or choked with wildlife there is a
bike lane on A1A which one can ride to the nearest bridge and head back
to the Tidal Marsh to view the crustaceans frolicking amongst the
mangrove roots.

East-West Options:
==================
                    Griffin Rd.:
Bike lane from Douglas to University
                                 No bike lane In Dania
Bike lane on Dania Bch. Blvd.

                    Pines/Hollwd Blvd:
                                 Intermittent bike lanes

                    Arthur St.:
An alternative to Johnson street runs

                               from the turnpike to University

Actually there are enough things to do and places to explore in this
part of broward. I would be hard to see every thing on just one ride.
This suburban ride does not offer a great many really fast sections but
with a good tailwind I have kept pace with the traffic on Johnson
Street.

If anyone is interested I am free this weekend.

Hello again everyone!  Hope all is well with you!   I rode another 80 miles today.  Not that this is a great subject but the chaffing issue is still there and as much info I have on products to use - what I really need is some time out of the saddle to heal unfortunately-  I thought I healed up but the last two days and 161 miles later and the chafe is still not gone.  So tomorrow I will suffer much more greatly (mentally) as I ride in the SAG wagon and heal physically.  Enough of that bad news.

Had a great  AH - HA!!! moment today-  one of the riders "Jeff" and I stopped our bikes in the middle of our ride and turned around and just looked at the vast Teton Mountain Range so far away and that vast land beyond it - and we said to eachother-  We rode our bikes from beyond those mountains!!!  Wow,  It really hit me hard.  We are so focused on keeping the pedals turning and moving forward to the next town - that we forget to turn around and look at what we have accomplished!!!  So it took me almost 600 miles under my wheels later to realize that- something so simple yet something so great!!! Wow- this really is going to be a life changing trip!!!!  So I will keep the pedals turning and burning as soon as we sort out our chafe and we will be moving on!!! Take care and best wishes,  Carrie Ann

Hey Andy,
Thanks for the info. Im "grounded" this weekend. However, if you'd like to lead a ride, I'd suggest you schedule it - enter the start date, time, location, speed and distance. etc in our calendar of events or send me the info and I'll do that for you.

This goes for anyone on this list. If you come up with a particularly nice route - why not share it with us by scheduling a ride.

I would think that after the B.A.F. and some of  the two lane -no
shoulder-55 MPH -truck route -sections that Route 27 a divided -paved
shoulder- road way would seem quite tame in comparison . The best
sections on the BAF were identical in roadway design to Route 27.
Go ahead and schedule a ride. You'll never know who's gonna show up!! BTW, I thought that some of the places we rode through during BAF were just HORRIBLE and that is one reason I don't think I want to do this partcular ride again. That is not to say Im staying away from the road but simply to say that I much rather ride in areas with little or no traffic.

Not really a direct response to your post Jose, but I've got similar
feelings about the up-coming Frank Stark event. There are some parts
of A1A that are just TERRABLE single lane, no bike lane, bike and
traffic wise after a few hours. Hence the reason I'm planing to do a
(Hopefully) Quick metric for the event. I'll likewise be taking a
hard look as to if I will want to participate in it again, with the
$$$ factor and also the traffic and road factors. Of late, I'm just
into wanting to do EARLY start ride / finish rides, before the heat
and traffic catch up with me syndrome these days.

I don't mind riding NORTH on A1A early in the AM. What I don't like is coming
back on A1A after 12 NOON cuz the traffic is just impossible.

In talking to Sergio, we might consider going NORTH as far as we can (possibly
NORTH of Satellite Beach) and either get a ride back (something I would probably
do) or ride back the following day, something Sergio would easily do. A year ago
we talked about a Sun UP to Sun Down ride but we didn't follow up with any kind
of action as we got consumed by the Cross Florida Event.

The good thing about going NORTH on A1A til we run out of day hours, is that we
can't get lost. A cue sheet is not needed.

As far as doing a FAST metric, I would suggest an Indian Reservation Ride. It
would be very easy to do a VERY fast metric there as there is little traffic and
no traffic lights. The trouble w/ that idea is that we would probably have to
wait til it is a bit cooler. The temperatures around 12 noon to 3 pm are just
too high.

Jose
