When I looked out the window and saw gray skies ths mornng I thought it might
not be. Then I walked the dog and found it was hjustovercast, and the temps were
sublime and the winds just enough to keep you cool without throuwing a wall in
front of you.

So out I went, for my semi-standard loop from my house to Lake Worth, and back.
I couldn't of asked for a better ride. The legs were working better than usual,
the people on the street were actually freindly, and when I was done I actually
wanted to ride more.

So I rode over to the local bike store and bought an iBike. Since I plopped the
money down for an iPhone 4S on Friday it was timeto get the rest of the package
to make my phone a super version of a garmin bike computer (yes it reads the
ANT+ speed, cadence and heart rate sensors so these are not estimated off GPS
readings or some algorithm in a cheap app.

I'll let everyone know more on the iBike after I get a chance to play with it.

Walt.  Thanks for your post about your great ride today and your IBike purchase.  I am really interested in how well that works out for you.  Maybe I will get one too if it is as good as some people say it is.  BTW, The Bent Society had a great ride today.  We had 13 riders and 8 of us had lunch at TooJays afterwards.

Congrats Tom,

That's an excellent swap for a great high racer. I too, recently swapped for a Corsa with a polished aluminum frame.

I made a mustache handlebar with my swing-out mirrors, and bar end hand rests.

I remember that you don't get over to the coast often. We had 13 riders at Lake Worth Sat, It would be good to see you riding with us on A1A one Sat. David, from Belle Glade, with his Strada is planning to come over soon.

Have fun with the new ride.

I was able to get a 50 mile ride in yesterday. The overcast skies and turbulent
moist ocean breezes kept me cool and pushed me home. As I approached the house
it started coming down. That makes for a total of 80 miles this weekend all
while staying dry and cool. Who would have thought?

Wonderful. I suspect with the advent of cooler weather we will all be upping
our mileage. Your ride sounds delightful.

Hey Todd,

We have a ride, once or twice a month, in So Miami. It passes through the Gables, Pinecrest, and down to Black Point.

It passes through very scenic residential streets, has long straight runs, and great places for pit stops.

George, Ana, and several others do this ride on Sundays. There are opportunities to chase the DFs and check out the sights.

We may do it this Sunday.

Bill

OK, I have now had a chance to configure and mount my iBike, so its time for review 1.

First impressions are WOW!

This had to be the easiest bike computer I ever configured, and has functions and the ability to customize out the ying-yang.

Setting up my trike in the app took just mintes. No measuring of wheel circumferences required, just pick wheel diameter and tire size from the menu. Make a few other selections and it was ready to recognize the sensors. Here is where bug-1 showed up. It comes with a combo speed-cadence sensor that to put it mildly is not recumbent friendly.

There are two options:

1)      Do some surgery to graft a long piece of cable so the cadence sensor will reach.

2)      Buy separate speed and cadence ANT+ sensors

I have decided to do the latter, and have a speed sensor on my rear wheel, and am going to get the cadence sensor (not available in LBS). I just didn't get a wireless computer to then have a bunch of wires.

Second problem, the mount is designed to replace the screw in the handlebar headset. My 700 just had a plastic cap, which even if I had drilled a hole in it, would not provide the torsional strength to hold this thing. So I did a little quick engineering and came up with a simple solution. I bought a 1-inch boat drain plug with a screw-down tightener and used it in the tube as a mount for the iBike. It works fine. ThenI saw the old Sun EZ-Trike had a compression plug in its tube, so I could of swapped these (oh well).

I then set it up to use the three default screens to see what they were like and went for a quick ride Loved how easy it was to read and the multitude of data. But, I quickly decided to change them to what I wanted. There are now six customized screens with either bike data Heart rate data, comos of these, these with an active map, and one I made just to check the weather conditions. Switching between screens are as easy as swiping your finger across the screen.

Tomorrow looks like it wil bea wonderful day acordng to the weather report so it will be time to test it on a longer ride.

More to come as I get more time with this thing.

Meet In The Middle Ride Info

Welcome all South Florida Bent Riders to the First

The Idea
: For the last 2 months we have averaged 11 riders on our A1A rides. From our  group of 18+ bents, this past Sat we had 14 riders.   From the enthusiastic discussions, over the past month, an idea emerged which was quickly dubbed the Meet in the Middle Ride If our fellow South Florida riders attend, we could have a presence of 25 to 30 riders on A1A.

The idea is, to meet further south than our usual Lake Worth Beach/Boynton Inlet starting locations. This will make it more convenient and inviting for our Broward and Dade County riders to join in the fun.

20 So Fl riders attended our October MITM Ride. We will be riding a 32 mile loop from Deerfield Beach Beach Sat, Nov 12.

You can find the ride info at; tbssfl.com.

Hope to see all you So Fl riders for this great ride and lunch afterward.

I really should have written this up much sooner, but the time got totally away from me.

This Sunday, the South Broward Wheelers is having a charity ride to raise money for our Adopt-a-Bike program.  This program provides bikes and helmets to needy kids on our local area.  We've been doing this for 10 years and the charities we support really appreciate what we do.

This year, instead of a big full-bore century with maps, T-shirts, marked routes, hot lunch, post-ride massages and all that, we're having 5 different level rides with leaders leaving from Markham Park.  The levels are:

Intermediate: 14-16 mph for 32 miles
Experienced: 16-18 mph for 42 miles
Advanced: 18-20 mph for 45 miles
Advanced-Plus: 20-22 mph for 55 miles
Fast: 22+ for 55 miles

There is a $20 minimum donation.  There is a nice continental breakfast and a raffle at the finish.  Registration opens at 6 AM.  Volunteers will be there to direct you to the start location once you enter the park.

Additional information at www.southbrowardwheelers.com.
