Guys,

As I mentioned previously, about 39 you have told me you plan to participate in tomorrow's Pot Luck Dinner by the Pool.

Here are the obligatory RULES:

1) NO GLASS by the pool.

2) You MAY bring the CHAIR in front of your ROOM but you MUST return it to its original location.

3) The organizers will appreciate if a few of you will help us CLEAN UP after our little "party". I told the management that we have a group of WELL BEHAVED CYCLISTS who are willing to make sure we don't MAKE a MESS. (Please dont make a "mentiroso" out of me)

4) Last but not LEAST, PLEASE, PLEASE, EAT and DRINK as much as your belly can hold so we don't have leftovers!!!

Enjoy and I'll see you tomorrow!!

Jose

Hey guys,

The Withlacooche Bent Invasion Weekend  is FAST approaching.  I know that many of us are counting each second that goes by.  Please remember to come by the Central Motel's pool area THIS FRIDAY,  at around 4:30 PM. A welcome wagon will be setup complete with some drinks and junk food, compliments of our sponsors: (http://www.atlanticbicycle.com/ , http://www.cyclingsolutions.com & http:www//hamptonsedge.com/ .  You'll be able to pick up your schedule, ID tag and  a few discount coupons from our sponsors.(When you ride with the Florida Bent Riders you get to ride for free, enjoy free snacks - which is quite important given the fact we're an eating club with a cycling disorder - and save lots mula on your next purchase of bent toys and accessories)

Following the Welcome Wagon, 39 of you have told us that you'll be participating in our Pot Luck Pool Party (5:30 PM - 8 PM) (Thank YOU WILLIE for helping us organize this party) If you have not received an invitation for this Pot Luck Dinner and/or told Willie what you're bringing, please be sure to email soflakettwiesel@...>,

We expect about 55 riders to join us the following day (Saturday)for the AM ride and evening dinner. Also,  be sure to stick around Saturday afternoon  and check out a few of the trikes offered by  http://www.TrikeShoppe.com , our forth event sponsor The good folks from Trike Shoppe LLC will be there in the flesh to demo their bikes (GreenSpeed and many others) and just as importantly - if not more so - they plan to please/fill our bellies with drinks/beer and snacks!

On Sunday we have a couple of alternate rides, a trail ride for slower riders (like me) and a FAST ride, compliments of Regis of Hamptonsedge.com fame!!!

For more details, PICK UP the RIDE schedule Friday at 4:30 PM (@ the Welcome Wagon) or Saturday at around 8:40 AM (just before the ride & traditional photo op session.)

So.... start packing..... start getting your bent contraptions ready for this weekend!

Your mission MUST be completed and failure is NOT an OPTION: Your mission is simply to BE THERE!!!!

See you in a couple of days

============

By the way, if you happen to get to the hotel early THIS FRIDAYT (say, just before 2 PM), LOOK for Willie as a group of early arrivals plan to do a little PRE-Welcome Wagon Ride on the Trail!!!

Carl, you da man!

(from Shari)
"One of the best parts was when the pack I was riding with caught up to
Carl at the light at 178th and Pines in Pembroke Pines. As we headed
north, Carl, in front, pulled us up to about 21 mph and kept
accelerating. Our group wanted to hold 20-21 mph, but the two guys
behind Carl took up the challenge and stuck with him. As I watched
from my usual place ensconced in the comfort of the paceline, Carl
kept up the speed until one by one, the roadies fell back. It was
awesome to see him open up a can o' whoop-ass on those guys, both of
whom were younger, skinny guys on featherweight road bikes. Such fun!"

Shari had a great time even going into the wind Steve and I ate way too much at the end. It was good seeing Ted and Carl. I met Larry who rides a Cafe' he was doing real good speed
I want to thank Josh for sag support in which he helped out one of our riders, April is an EMT
and she stopped to help out a crash victim , he ended up with a bad cut and major road rash plus a concussion anyway Josh called me and said he had April with him and dropped her off at the 2nd rest stop so we hooked up and went into the head wind @ 16-18mph
All in all great ride, great time, we ended up at 18.0 mph average I am happy

I am happy to say that I finished the full metric century (I had 64.8
miles on my 'puter) with energy to spare despite 9 of the last 15
miles into the wind. At various times I rode with fellow 'bent riders
Ted, Carl, Larry, Phil and John. Everyone finished in great time.

The mass start was mercifully with a cross-wind heading north, and
wound through residential Jacaranda Lakes out to Pine Island Rd, then
SR 84 where we had a marvelous tailwind out to Flamingo Rd. South on
Flamingo to Stirling, west to Dykes and south to the rest stop at the
Apple Tree Montessori. At that point, most of the pack, including
Larry, continued on without stopping. I needed a pit stop and to grab
some munchies, so I pulled in. Shortly after, a group of SBW guys I
ride with all the time arrived. I stuck around until they were ready
to leave, and I hung with them through to the next rest stop. This
section went south on Dykes to Bass Creek Rd in Miramar, and then west
to 178th Ave.

One of the best parts was when the pack I was riding with caught up to
Carl at the light at 178th and Pines in Pembroke Pines. As we headed
north, Carl, in front, pulled us up to about 21 mph and kept
accelerating. Our group wanted to hold 20-21 mph, but the two guys
behind Carl took up the challenge and stuck with him. As I watched

kept up the speed until one by one, the roadies fell back. It was
awesome to see him open up a can o' whoop-ass on those guys, both of
whom were younger, skinny guys on featherweight road bikes. Such fun!

The route continued up 186th Ave, across Griffin to Bonaventure Blvd,
then South Post Rd over to Weston Regional Park for the 2nd rest stop.
Up till now, we had been riding mostly north/south and west, so we
had either a cross-wind or tailwind and could keep a really good pace.
I had a 19 mph avg at this point. From here on out, we would have
couple of easterly legs, some of them long, and we were not looking
forward to that. Several of the SBW guys I came in with were doing
the full Century - the fools! - so we parted company as we left the
park. Phil, John, Larry and Ted joined the group I was in for the home
stretch.

We were working well as a team, and holding 14-16 mph on the shorter
eastward legs, 17-18 on the north-south sections. At Boy Scout Rd and
Orange, many in the group wanted to take a breather. We knew we had
about 7 miles from Boy Scout to Pine Island Rd dead into the wind. My
friend Donna and I just wanted to get it over with, so we headed out
alone. We actually did really well. I pulled much of the way because
I just felt great. I could hold 13-14, but Donna seemed to fall back
at that speed (I'm not much to draft), so I'd hold 12. After a mile
or so, I'd have her pull for a half-mile or so, so I could regain my
strength, then I'd move in front again. We were stopped at the light
at Griffin and Nob Hill when the rest of our group caught up. Yay!
As we started out, one guy called out that Donna had a mechanical.
Boo! He and I turned back to see what was up - she had a flat. The
rest of the group waited in the shopping center for several minutes,
but when another pack went past, they assumed we were in there (Hey,
geniuses! No recumbent!) and went with them. We got the flat changed
in about 5 minutes, and the 3 of us completed the rest of the ride
together. On the south leg from Pine Island to Sheridan, we caught up
with another guy and feeling great, kicked it up to 24 mph for the
last 2 miles!

This was one helluva a ride, and it felt wonderful to be able to
complete it with a decent average, 16.5 mph, considering the
gale-force winds we had to fight. Sorry more of you didn't turn out.

Thanks, Teabone, Carl, Larry, John, Phil and Steve, for supporting our
club and the charities we help.

As I watched
from my usual place ensconced in the comfort of the paceline, Carl
kept up the speed until one by one, the roadies fell back. It was
awesome to see him open up a can o' whoop-ass on those guys, both of
whom were younger, skinny guys on featherweight road bikes.

SAFE Newsletter: Bad News for Florida

Do you remember the "Main Street Report" that measured the Pedestrian Danger Index?

It's been updated and the results are abysmal for Florida.

Florida ranks 1,2,3,4 on the list as the most dangerous US Metro Areas for walking:

1. Orlando-Kissimmee,
2. Tampa-St. Pete- Clearwater,
3. Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach,
4. Jacksonville.

Please read all about it (the full report is attached) and what can be done, to make our cities and communities safer for pedestrians.

We have much more work to do....

I'm just hoping my ankle is better by the weekend because it cost me a ride
today, one that I had been looking forward to since mid last week. Between
the store and my full time job, we get very very little time to ride;
however, because we have put three people back on cycling wheels who thought
they would never ride again, the extra work is totally worth the effort.
Trikes are for everyone; however, they really can open up many opportunities
for folks who thought their cycling days were over when they had to give up
riding their two wheeler.

We picked up Gail's trike from Power on Cycling Friday afternoon. The
Withlacoochee weekend will be the first REAL test of the system. Guess you
all will now first hand how it does

Hi John,
After many years of riding with Jose and others,
I became a disciple of the "Order of Recumbents"
Moving into a community of over 55 Motorcoach owners made my job easy. RV'ers tend to be more active than most people their age. Many had never seen a recumbent before ours, especially our tandem Kettwiesels.  Converting one uncomfortable DF rider at a time, sometimes one couple at a time. Trikes out number bikes 34 to 4 (us old folks don't like to fall you know).
Many cyclists moved to Polk City due to the Gen Van Fleet trail less then a mile away.
Central Florida is a wonderful place for 'bent trikes!

Hi Shari,

It was nice seeing and riding with you today on the SBW century. It was a great
ride even thought the florida mountains (wind) was very strong. Hope to ride
with you again soon.

While I like the mid chain drive, I will readily admit that the hub motor
concept is sweet, particularly when you recognize that it will be virtually
silent. Have you tried it yet on hills; and, if so, how does the battery
hold up? Also, are you using LI batteries or Lead Acid? The guys we ride
with on this board fully remember how often we were dead last on group rides
when we road the Kettwiesel tandem setup. I used to refer to it as my five
wheel torture chamber; actually, we were just joking about this with Josh
last weekend, clipping along at 13 to 15 MPH on our Greenspeed. I've often
wondered if the Greenspeed Anura set up as a tandem would be as inefficient
as the Kettwiesels because the Anura just seems to roll much better.

Hey, is there a particular page on http://www.trikeshoppe.com.html
that presents a problem for you because this definitely alarmed Cynthia.
You've just stirred my juices (at 21 MPH), to put some juice on our next
tandem. Just being able to flip that switch once in a while would be loads
of fun, especially when Jose wants to race the disabled couple. (JUST
MAKING SURE YOU ARE AWAKE OVER THERE JOSE.)

fine with the Ketts in tandem. The biggest problem was on group rides. On
MOST rides, we rode alone after the first mile or so, as 10-12mph just did
not make it. With a friend on Gail's kett, keeping up with most riders was
easy. Gail will now ride in our neighborhood ALONE, knowing she can always
"motor" home if needed.

I think the Kettwiesels are the best delta trike out there. I can keep
up with Catrike, Trice Q&T, TerraTrikes and Recumbents USA trikes. With 32
recumbent trikes in our subdivision, very easy to compare performance
between trikes. As a date driven nerd", I have so much data on trike tires.
From the old style high pressure "Comp Pools" to my bullet proof Marathons,
I did now see any MEASURABLE difference between the tires. TRUE, as a
tandem, 5 wheels on the ground is an 66% increase in rolling resistance.
Before we bought the ketts, we did think about the Greenspeed. Size and the
inability to pedal at different cadences was the deciding factor. Our
situation is far from your, I understand that.
I have offered my Ketts to our dealer for people to test ride, as well as
many of our neighbors. The Ketts work best, for us. Looking forward to ride
with you on the Withlacoochee tail next week.
Web site looks good, but with my Old Eyes, NOT easy to read some of the text
on a yellow background. IF your market is old folks like me, ...

   Last word,
Gail's trike, with me almost fitting on it, will do 21.1mph on a level
road. Better than I can do...
