Sergio,

I just sent a query to South Florida Water Management District, via their web
site, with your questions. We'll see what the reply is.

Sergio and Everyone...

I just received a call from Gary Ritter at the SFWMD office here in Okeechobee.
Gary is a cyclist, and I met him at the LOST Rotary Ride last weekend and he is
on the LOST as often as I am.

His 'official' answer is to call 911! All the cops, and paramedics and such in
Okeechobee have keys to the gates on the path. They can get to you. He had an
issue a couple years ago, in Martin County, where a cyclist crashed and the
paramedics had to have the fire department cut open a gate to get to a patient.
They did, and the fellow survived. NOW, Martin County, Palm Beach County and
the rest are supposed to have keys to the gates.

I was amazed how quickly I got a reply, but my query went to the front office in
Palm Beach, was bounced back to Gary here in Okeechobee, and having met me a
week ago, he just called me on the phone and we had a nice chat about it.

I hope this is a help.

Josh,

I understand the early morning riding time in your neck of the state.  The time that I was in your shop and had to get gas etc. I was politely over-whelmed with the amount of dodging traffic that I had to do and that was on a Saturday morning between opening and around 1100.  I really don't know how you all survive on the roads unless you know a good deal of back road to get from point a to point b.

Hiya Kids,

Well, we are less than a week away from the LOST ride, and I don't think that
I'm going to participate.

I was training for the ride, then I whanged a gate and made a trip to the
hospital. The very next Saturday, I managed a 25+ mile ride with the Okeechobee
Rotary LOST ride. Late last week I came down with a bad cold/flu type thing,
and missed a day of work on Friday. Saturday I was feeling a bit better. This
morning, I was up at my normal time, and made a quick trip to Walmart for some
groceries. Got dizzy, had the sweats, it wasn't pretty...

So I spent the who day indoors, in the big chair in front of the TV, so I can
get into work tomorrow and try to keep us afloat financially (Diane just took a
10% cut in pay at work).

I doubt that I'll have the stamina by Saturday to make much of a showing on the
bike path. So, I'll be staying home this time....(again)

Thanks everyone for your responses! Yea, I'm still around, but like Josh
mentioned, I tend to do the start at 5 AM and be done by about 7 AM riding. WHY,
well partly due to what Bill stated here, but also to be LESS embarrassed when
flatting (Like I did today, just arriving at the beach) and not having cyclists
look at you, when you end up having to do the INFAMOUS WALK home! Ohhh, I know
how to change a flat and all, but when you realize all your tube stems are not
long enough for your deep dish wheel, it's time to starting hoofing. Plus I had
a LOVELY time trying to get my Conti GP4000 tire back onto my Alps rim...
)(*&^%$##@(*&& Also if you do have to do the.. walk, it's a lot cooler in the
morning and the sun is not up yet.
As for you Joe, I need to pick your brain, as I am indeed flirting with the dark
side............... in that of a fold up upright! (Probably a BikeFriday or
Dahon) Tried to do a PUTZ around ride with my landlord on my Aero and what a
TOTAL NIGHTMARE! You just can't putz on that bike period!!! See you all on the
road!!! :-)

T Tom

You have only one job, get better!!!!  Put you object of motion on a trainer and succumb to insult to injury of riding on a trainer in front of you favorite show.  A few things get acomplished, you kept up some of your training and if you feel faint you can fall off in the comfort of being on your own property.  I use this method of madness all the time...

Thanks for the idea Bill. I believe what happens, is an injury causes your
body's immune system to fail a bit, and open the window for other maladies. In
my case, I allowed a virus of some sort in, and then fought it for more than a
week before I fell ill enough that I couldn't go to work. With some luck, I'll
work thru this week without missing any more time. But the 115 mile ride around
the lake is OUT.

I'll probably try for it again this fall, after the weather cools a bit in
November...

Thanks again!

I've tried to look at all of the posts to figure out who is going to be riding
this Saturday. Who is riding? Ted told me this afternoon that he can't ride so
I need to know if the group is still going before I travel that far.

Sorry Steve to say I am not going. Postponing this ride to so late in the year
was a major mistake.
I been out there the last two weekends playing ball with my grandson and it gets
very hot during mid day. I just do not want to deal with the heat for so long.
Steve may be this Fall we can set a date and go ahead with it even if some want
to do it and are not in shape.
For those who want to do it this fall 2009 winter 2010 maybe you should start
training early.

I"m going to be out of town Saturday and possibly Sunday. This is something I had not planned but I don't really have a choice... I feel bad that I asked you all to delay the ride date for me so I hope that this still works OK for you all and that the neither the temperatures of a a hot electrical discharge from the heavens damage your bike or trike.

Subject: SFRR: LOST one day, next Saturday...

Hiya Kids,

Well, we are less than a week away from the LOST ride, and I don't think that I'm going to participate.

I was training for the ride, then I whanged a gate and made a trip to the hospital. The very next Saturday, I managed a 25+ mile ride with the Okeechobee Rotary LOST ride. Late last week I came down with a bad cold/flu type thing, and missed a day of work on Friday. Saturday I was feeling a bit better. This morning, I was up at my normal time, and made a quick trip to Walmart for some groceries. Got dizzy, had the sweats, it wasn't pretty...

So I spent the who day indoors, in the big chair in front of the TV, so I can get into work tomorrow and try to keep us afloat financially (Diane just took a 10% cut in pay at work).

I doubt that I'll have the stamina by Saturday to make much of a showing on the bike path. So, I'll be staying home this time....(again)

As for you Joe, I need to pick your brain, as I am indeed flirting with the dark side...............

I think it is TIME you come out of the closet and admit your dark secret..... Come ON....EZ .... I know..... and, for our protection, I think our group should know that YOU, SIR, you ARE NOT a ZOMBIE. You are a ..... (gulp) a VAMPIRE!!!  This is why you must ride BEFORE the SUN is out! Look, I understand even thought it is NOT OK... But NOW it is time to help ALL of us understand. When did the master vampire bite you and was he riding an upright folding bike when he sank his teeth into you?

Thanks everyone for your responses! Yea, I'm still around, but like Josh mentioned, I tend to do the start at 5 AM and be done by about 7 AM riding. WHY, well partly due to what Bill stated here, but also to be LESS embarrassed when flatting (Like I did today, just arriving at the beach) and not having cyclists look at you, when you end up having to do the INFAMOUS WALK home! Ohhh, I know how to change a flat and all, but when you realize all your tube stems are not long enough for your deep dish wheel, it's time to starting hoofing. Plus I had a LOVELY time trying to get my Conti GP4000 tire back onto my Alps rim... )(*&^%$##@(*&& Also if you do have to do the.. walk, it's a lot cooler in the morning and the sun is not up yet.
As for you Joe, I need to pick your brain, as I am indeed flirting with the dark side............... in that of a fold up upright! (Probably a BikeFriday or Dahon) Tried to do a PUTZ around ride with my landlord on my Aero and what a TOTAL NIGHTMARE! You just can't putz on that bike period!!! See you all on the road!!! :-)

And PLEASE don't smash into the TV set until AFTER you're completely healed.
!!!!  Put you object of motion on a trainer and succumb to insult to injury of riding on a trainer in front of you favorite show.

T Tom

You have only one job, get better!!!!  Put you object of motion on a trainer and succumb to insult to injury of riding on a trainer in front of you favorite show.  A few things get acomplished, you kept up some of your training and if you feel faint you can fall off in the comfort of being on your own property.  I use this method of madness all the time...

doing the no one gets dropped thing and....... Ohhhhh, GAWD, IT JUST CAN'T be
done! I'm sure the cemetery ground occupants were rolling, seeing me try and do
a 2 mph U turn...
BUT wait, there might be a silver lining out of this! With a bike more suited to
nice FUN leasurly riding that you SFRR types specialize in; JUST might just get
me out to join your kindred bent soles more often! :-) You could all have
squealing Ecstasy fun SPANKING me on my little upwrong!!!

Shari,
How long is this ride going to be?? 25-30? 30-35? 35+? When is the start time?
Maybe we can get Jose to rise from his coffin and ride with us.
