Okay Bob. Let's face it. You don't give yourself enough credit. You are NOT a little crazy but I'm afraid that no amount of psycho therapy can cure you. BTW, you'll be lucky if you can feel the bottom half of your body in a week's time....

Nevertheless, I will continue to be your cryophobic fan....

Hi Jose,
You're right about priceyyy. but, if you take money off the table you wouldn't buy another unit. Second, the other available motor assist kit on the market, don't compare with this system. I felt I'd be replacing part and long run I'd pay more and not have the reliability. I'll keep you posted.   I'm hoping to cover more site seeing, touring and less tylenol. Take care.

I bought the EcoSpeed, electric motor assist for my Recumbent today.
The thought of not being able to ride my recumbent for the eight months
of surgery recovery was too much to take. I like the idea of having the
back up if I pull a muscle or develope a joint proble while I'm on
longer ride. I'll keep you posted when the kit comes in.

The RANS "XTreme" merits my staying out of my coffin. It is indeed an interesting concept. Our mission, which I think we've accepted, is to determine if the "Xtream" can tickle our bent fancy.

Hi, John - looking forward to seeing you sometime soon! Biz - Great
to hear that you're still getting out there!

I *love* SV at night. The full moon is great, but usually it's not up
until we're nearly back to the start. I've done it for years without
any lights at all. As long as no one else around me has lights, my
eyes adjust and I can see the path just fine. It shines like a
silvery ribbon even without a moon. With no light wash, the stars are
positively incredible, and I can watch the fireflies flash all around
me.

Whenever I've gone with a group, I hang back and let anyone with
lights go ahead till they're out of sight so I can enjoy the darkness,
the fireflies, and my silver path.

Michael, I'm so glad that it wasn't worse than a bad gash. Your
cycling skills will be legend now, having stayed upright after you
were hit with enough force to knock off the sideview mirror! I hope
you called the cops to file a report at least. You have a broken
mirror along with your hospital record as proof. Take care, and Happy
New Year to everyone!

I learned that lesson a few years ago when I was driving to work. I was driving on the road that I normally commute on and as I passed a cyclist I’d realized that I never even saw him until I picked him up in my rear view mirror. I actually pulled over about ¼ mile away and sat there and thought about what just happened. I missed hitting the cyclist by the “Grace of God”, it was a sobering awakening. I now take into very strong consideration the direction of the sun when I plan my rides. Oh yea, I commute on different way to work now too, it’s about 2 miles longer but way, way safer.

Michael,

I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say that I'm glad you survived and yes, I agree, this is as close as it gets!!! Now you'll need to make sure you join us when we invade the Withlacoochee trail so we can make sure that you're really alive. At least, it will be a great opportunity for you to show and for us to witness your battle scar.

BTW, I learned that one should not ride towards the dying sun right after one or two riders were killed on route 84. The driver claimed that the sun blinded him. I'm sorry you learned that lesson the hard way.

Riding conditions in our South Fl area are increasingly bad. It does seem like we can't or shouldn't share the road. Though I try to stick to roads with bike lanes, I realize that a bike lane doesn't offer the kind of barrier I think one needs around here. I find trails to be a lot more peaceful and enjoyable and so that is where I'll be biking most of the time. That is not to say I won't do roads with a group from time to time but you know, I'm starting to put road riding in the same category as "faith" line riding. I know, I know, we need to die of something but I'd rather avoid the pain....if I can..... I'm sure a number of emails will follow defending the virtues of road riding and the pleasures of a "faith" line. One must defend/justify our choices because..... they're ours.

Subject: SFRR: Happy 2009!

hi all,

I am ecstatic to report that 2009 will be a great year. Sunday

I had my first close call from a vehicle. It happened in just milliseconds. I still am in amazement and gratitude towards my angels.

I was heading east bound on Royal Palm Blvd, Coral Springs. it was just before 8 AM and the sun was still a little low almost blinding me. My radio was playing "Angel" by Shaggy. All of a sudden I felt a car smash into me and it was beside me passing fast. I heard the thump as if it hit me but it was passing within a 1/2" of me. I felt like it hit me. Then I saw a piece of the car rolling in the street, bouncing along. It was the side view mirror of the car.

I could not believe I had just taken the mirror off this car and I am just rolling along, did not waiver an inch.. Then I noticed a large piece of plastic that apparently broke off the mirror casing sticking in my arm..I pulled onto the side walk and removed the plastic revealing large gash on my arm with part of my forearm muscle exposed.

I called my wife and told her to get some sheets, towels, and something to use as a tourniquet and come immediately as I could be bleeding to death. She wasn't gonna fool around with all that, she called 911 for a rescue. That was a great idea. I did take my own shirt off and attempted tie off my upper arm.. i do not think it worked very well, but after running around in circles and then finally sitting against a fence with my hand up i just became weaker and weaker. A.nice woman walking her dog did ask me if I could use some help or wanted her to stay with me.The paramedic explained the human body reacts to incisions by clotting and stopping the blood loss. Fortunatley mine was stopping as long as I was extending it up and tied off.

The driver never stopped. The ambulance came and suggested North Broward because of specialists in micro surgery. They got me in immediately,  checked the vital signs and assessed it was  a wide laceration with no cut to the muscle, tendon or otherwise. It just opened up the shin on the forearm. About 18 stitches and 17 staples later I am thrilled to report I should be good as new in 6 weeks or less.

I feel so thankful that this did not end as cross and memorial on the roadside, that my injury was minimal and is expected to heal fine. I did learn a few things from that jack-ass. I should not be riding on the road into the sun. If I cannot see comfortably a driver may be effected as well.. I should evaluate before removing a large object that has logged itself deep within me to be sure it had not severed an artery or something severe.. Call an ambulance if it is an emergency. Add more  bling on the tail light.

Live life to its fullest every second as if today was your last day. Enjoy family, friends and the love you share.

See you all on the road shortly, today is a gift,.......that is why it is called the present

Happy New Year!

Add more  bling on the tail light.

hi all,
I am ecstatic to report that 2009 will be a great year.
I thought this ride was traditionally done under a full moon? That
would help with the visibility problems.

we went to the valley also. i think u were the one packing up as we were
arriving. lots of gators!!! i guess its the perfect time of day to see them.
saw the sunset and had a sandwich at the tower then headed back. as it got dark
we saw and almost ran into some doe doe heads without lights on their bikes. it

the first time we ride at night with no other lights to aid in visibility.
after this experience, it is very clear that lights on bikes are to be seen more
so than see, (maybe this is common knowledge, but new to me) cause we certainly
didnt see those folks with the 'aid' of our lamps, but we did see every other
bike that had a lamp on theirs. we had a great time and would do it again any
time.

Rode the "Valley" today. Got there at 2 and left at 4:15. Didn't see
any other bents, but lots of gators.
Got home (75 miles) in time for the 2nd half of the big game.

Just to add...

I've ridden LOST several times and I've been stung on two occasions by
wasp.

Both on days of strong winds while I was heading into the wind or a
cross-headwind... Both got me on the thigh...

One was really a kicker and only 30 miles into the 130 mile (yes I
ride some off of LOST too) ride and it was hurting for several miles
but mostly gone before the end of the ride...

I will not be able to make the ride tomarrow. I would much rather be
riding my bike with my friends but I have to climb up on my roof and
power snake the kitchen sink drain, because some idiot (ME) put too
much stuff down the garbage disposal last night. Sorry to miss it but
I made the mess now i have to clean it up....
