Congrats on your new job/adventure and good luck to you Walt.  Your mission, should you choose to accept it is to make SURE you're not working during the Silver Comet Weekend (Oh yeah, you guys thought that I forgot? - Details will stat to surprise you within eh..... 30 days?). Should this mission prove to be impossible, then secretly continue to convert as many Georgia wegie riders to our sacred cult.

Some of you already know, but it's time to make it official.

Recently I was offered a new job, and unless something goes wildly awry, I will be moving from South Florida to Georgia this January. So it's time to say goodbye to Hollywood and put Georgia on my mind. Hinesville here I come.

To all the great freinds I have made in the SFRR. I'm definitely going to miss the camaraderie on the rides. While only 6-hours away by car, it's a little too far to travel for a metric, so it will put a damper on joining in on weekend rides down here. Hopefully I will be able to make it down for the HPRA.

But do worry, as I will still visit this site. (Jose should especially look out).;)

Shari good to hear from you hope you doing well. I must say called the
number on KIds in distress web site and was told that 100% of entry fee goes
to run the cyling event again I repeat that is what I was told when I called the
telephone number on their site. Participant must make a saparete donation if
they want to. I must say that even if no money goes to the charity the
exposure and awardness they get out of the event might be worth it.

Sergio,

The amount going to Kids in Distress is probably close to 50% and most
likely more, of the profits from the proceeds going to the charity.
I'm basing that on the distribution from the SBW Century.

Century proceeds are used to fund the club, promote cycling as a
healthy form of exercise and transportation, and to provide bikes to
kids who would not otherwise get one. Our sponsors were generous this
year, so after expenses (T-shirts, food, rental equipment, etc.), we
had quite a sum left. We know what it takes to run the club for a
year, so after we deducted that, we allotted the rest to a variety of
kids' bike give-away programs, about $14K.

If you wanted to figure it out on a per-rider basis, I'd say it was
probably around $20-$25 out of each $35 entry fee going directly to
kids' bikes and bike related programs.

The KID charity may not have as many expenses (no actual club to run
and even more generous sponsors), so the percentage going directly to
KID may be closer to 75%.

Mark,

This is my understanding from your (Ken & Jose) response to my question. The P38 is a fast, fun bike with the seat as it's main draw back.
To me the seat is a major concern after switching my Haluzak seat to a euroseat. After trying the euroseat, I won't ride a conventional square mesh seat anymore.
Regarding my speed issue, you seem to be inclined towards high-racers.

If what I am saying is correct, then I should be looking for a high-racer with a eurostyle seat.  Any suggestions?

Hey Mr. Sergio,

I don't need any additional training to complete the double metric in January as it will likely be an easy paced metric - not a race. I'll be riding w/ Joe Keenan and so I think we'll keep the speed below 16 MPH. We completed Lake OKE a few days ago without any special training and I would not think the January event will be much harder (sure, it will be hilly but Lake OKE is WINDY)

If I were to participate in the Sebring event I would want to be in top shape so I can go further than before. The most I've done in 11 HRS and 45 minutes, as you know, is 175 miles but that was a LOOOONG time ago, you know, in my young days -  and I don't think I would want to pedal for 12 hours in Sebring and not be ready to do a bit better.

I'm sure you'll be in shape for Sebring as you're able to do at least one super long ride per weekend. I would not be surprised if you can cover 200 miles in 12 hours but I know I won't come close. My regular metrics keep me from losing whatever bit of fitness I've managed to retain this year and this is going to have to do until I'm able to fire my boss or retire.

Anchy,
Having recently purchased a P-38 I have an opinion. For reference I have owned a
highly modified Bachetta Strada, same in a Bachetta Giro. I started with a Bike E,
but I don't think that counts.
If you like the more upright seating position, the P-38 may be of interest to you.
Rather than finding it "squirrly", I think it is just more responsive, athletic, and just
gives me the feeling of "wanting to run". For handling, speed, and just plain fun, I
haven't ridden anything that compares. Is it as fast as a high racer? Not quite, but
it will outclimb most all of them unless you have an ultralight/high end one. For all
around urban, rural, and not so good road surfaces, in my opinion it is better than
a high racer, having owned one.
Best thing is to take a good ride on one to get a feel for it. I am going to put
a tail sock and a fairing on to see if that will put me over speed wise with the
high racers and then I'll have the best of everything.......just my two cents.....Mark

.

Well I owned a P-38 and it was an OK bike. The observations here are
correct, add to that if you have an Aero (Fat) belly, this bike might
not be for you. The seat has you sitting in an more upright crunch
posistion. The frame being rather short with a 700cc and 20 front does
make the bike a tad squrrely. If I were in the market for "SWB" which
I get from your interest in a P-38; I'd also check out the Bacchetta
SWB's. Very popular with this group. Below is a link to my my P-38.

Experienced/Advanced Level Metric - Date: Saturday December 2, 2006
Time: 6:45 am - 10:45 am

Location: Lester's Diner - NW 136th Street & NW 12th Ave
Street: NW 136th Street & NW 12th Ave
City/State/Zip: Sunrise, Florida

Phone: 954-673-0072

This is an fairly fast metric. The goal is to have at least a 17 MPH
average by the end of the ride so the cruising speed will be about 18-
19 MPH. Meet @ 6:45 AM at Lester's diner and be ready to pedal by 7 AM.
One short rest stop after 30 miles or quick STP stops in case of
biological emergencies. We'd like to finish before 10:45 AM!!!

Warning! If you can't maintain at least 17 MPH, we'll have to drop you,
something we do NOT like to do.

I think Mark is the right guy to answer this question. He has one that he has been customizing. I think the P-38 is a great bike, and one that has very good handling qualities. Many folks think it is a great climber too. The only two "negatives" I can think of are:

1) The seat - it has a square base and has very limited adjustability.
2) Wheel base - Very Short - This makes it a great bike for tight turns but I think that it might be nervous as very high speed (I'm talking speeds over 40 MPH - downhill speeds)

Willie is working on a route for a Sunday ride. I'm planning to do a metric this Saturday. I'll post the start location soon. It will be a relatively "fast" metric (average speed of 17 MPH, which means we want to maintain 18-19 MPH most of the way). And because of my available time, it will start VERY early (7 AM) so we can finish by 10:45 AM
