Yet hasn't NBC been promoting Skate America by mentioning Sasha's competing
there? I know I've seen this ad during the Grand Prix broadcasts.

A friend knows a skater who said that skate boots are supposed to hurt.

After not wearing high heels for eons, I bought a pair. Not the amazingly high
heels that are currently in fashion, just regular high heels, and I made sure
they were cheap. I wanted to practice walking in them to be sure I could do it
before buying better quality shoes. I made several attempts, but failed. I
could hobble on a bare floor, but uneven sidewalks that slanted toward the
street -- no way. I'd have been better off in skate boots.

I'm as cynical as the next poster and always had doubts about Sasha's comeback,
but not enough to think it was done to boost SOI tix sales...I dont see how
"skater talks big about returned to comp for Olympic year but doesnt actually
ever show up" builds anticipation.

And I agree with whichever poster said that NBC is showing skating this fall to
build interest pr-Vancouver and whether Sasha is shown or not merely a footnote.

My Saturday newspaper, the San Diego Union Tribune, included a glossy
magazine advertisement for South Coast Plaza, an upscale shopping mall
in Costa Mesa (Orange County) some 85+ miles away. We get these
magazine inserts from South Coast Plaza maybe 2 to 3 times a year.

The theme of this magazine is Enticed on Ice. There's several photos of
a model in designer clothes from various stores at this mall (eg,
Chanel, Dior, Armani) AND wearing ice skates. On ice. Or maybe it's on
a floor where they made it look like ice. The skates are pristine new
and are laced to the top hooks. I can't make out the brand on the heel,
but the heels are plastic rather than wood. Jacksons?

I don't see this online at South Coast Plaza's website
(www.southcoastplaza.com) although they have a link for their fall
catalog. This is probably the winter issue, and could be posted on the
website later.

Sandy, who wonders which hurt the most for the model - the ice skates or
the impossibly high heeled shoes

I think you got a good point here. I never paid attention to this team before,
but I watched yesterday their FD twice on CBC. I learned with this occassion
that they skate together for 10 years and it shows in the ease and matching
lines. Also that they have been the world junior champs in 2007. Well, they lost
some ground it means, because teams graduating later from juniors like Sam / Bat
or Cro /Poi bypassed them.
As far as their musical choice, I doubt that Albinoni's Addagio, which has been
skated a lot to, will make a big impact (although is always pleasant to listen
to Il Divo, I can get carried away by them:)):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ymVoXWZYPc

I think they would've needed something new, to make a push, into the next
Olympic cycle, especially that Dom / Sha most likey will be out at Worlds.

The USFSA has an established policy nowadays about automatic byes for
skaters who are assigned to international events within a specific time
period of their regional or sectional qualifying events. They would
have had to do the same for anyone else.

As far as being told to "prepare" for Skate America, Hughes would have
been doing that already for Easterns. It's not like this came at a down
time in her competition season.

Very doubtful. She probably gave it a try and her body cannot sustain the effort
to master competitive routines at this stage in her life.
The new system requires a lot more than what she used to do, spirals, spins,
streched positions to feature her lines.
The jumps out from footwork, correct edge jumping etc, probably took a toll on
her body.

I had this feeling all along from a year ago, but hey why not make a lot of
noise to keep her name in the headlines. She succeeded in that one.

I was assuming it was a reference to the choreographers
(Denkova/Stavisky from Bulgaria).
Also, the referee was Evgenia Karnolska. These officials are all listed
as ISU now, but under the old system she was a Bulgarian judge. Other
officials for the men's event were
Technical Controller Ms. Susan LYNCH (AUS)
Technical Specialist Ms. Anett POETZSCH-RAUSCHENBACH (Germany)
Assistant Technical Specialist Mr. Tomoaki KOYAMA (Japan)

Still, if your beef is GOE, these aren't the people responsible. You
can only blame them if the issue is downgrades, edge calls, or levels.

I think you're right that all music is "folk" except that written for
the upper classes, like symphonies and operas (and I guess the big
orchestral masses). Heck, some opera arias have even been sung by
regular folks as popular music of it's day, so I guess even some of
those are folk.

SASHA COHEN WITHDRAWS FROM 2009 CANCER.NET SKATE AMERICA

– 2006 Olympian Emily Hughes to take Cohen's place –

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 6, 2009) – Sasha Cohen, the 2006 Olympic silver
medalist, three-time World medalist and six-time U.S. medalist, announced today
she will not compete at 2009 Cancer.Net Skate America because of an injury. She
will be replaced by 2007 U.S. silver medalist Emily Hughes.

"I have been battling this injury for a while," Cohen said. "After meeting with
my orthopedic surgeon, it was determined that in order for me to fully recover,
I should not compete this week."

Cohen withdrew from her first Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series assignment,
Trophée Eric Bompard, in early October after being diagnosed with tendonitis in
her right calf.

"I'm very disappointed I won't be able to compete in Lake Placid," Cohen said.
"I've been going to physical therapy and training with every intention of being
healthy and ready for this competition."

Cohen says she will continue her physical therapy and training, with the goal of
competing at the 2010 AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Spokane, Wash,
Jan. 14-24, 2010.

Cohen announced in May her intention to return to competitive skating following
a three-year absence. Her last competition was the 2006 World Figure Skating
Championships in Calgary, Canada, where she won the bronze.

Cohen has been training in Lake Arrowhead, Calif., under the direction of Rafael
Arutunian, a former coach of two-time Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan.

Hughes, who finished seventh at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games, last competed at
Skate America in 2007, when she finished fourth.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to compete for the fourth time at Skate
America," said Hughes. "It is especially exciting to be representing the United
States in my home state of New York and at such an historic Olympic setting as
Lake Placid."

Korpi failed to qualify, she has an 8th place finish at TEB. Flatt can qualify
only if she wins SA.
The best bets right now are Yu Na and Suzuki, who will have to place in the top
4 at SA and SC respectively. the last position could be grabbed by Rochette, if
she wins at SC or places second and enough total points to score more than
Ashley W. C. Zhang still has theoretical chances if she wins SC.

Now, once Cleo corrected your "typo", I have to point out that there was no
Bulgarian judge on the panel either.

It is quite obvious that your are in love with Johnny's skating, nothing wrong
with it, but I wouldn't call his 3 axel / 3 toe combo quite majestic.
It was very good, that is all. He deserves + GOE, but that 0.8 was just about
right, the max he could get is +1.
Why? Here is your "bulgarisn" COP lesson:

1.He enters telegraphing into it (like Joubert) at a slower speed, no footwork
into it, therefore no extra GOE there.

2. Position in the air perfect, height about average +1 GOE there.

3. Good landing, not a lot of flow out, he puts his free leg soon down, no extra
GOE's there either.

So the +1 is about right, he got it from 6 judges out of 8.

About Johnny's programs this year, there are not outstanding. On top of it, he
skates slow.

He will have to hope the other guys to make mistakes and him to stay clean in
order to make the Olympic team.

I thought he had moments of real musicality and charm, but although the jumps
were solidly landed, repeatedly throughout the program there were moments of
seeming not quite under control and/or ungraceful.

won the ladies event at the Coupe de Nice this past weekend. I was impressed by
her at the JGP in Lake Placid earlier this season. She did qulify for the JGP
Final. I was impressed by the spring in her jumps. She doesn't have a Lutz yet
but did get credit for a 3tl/3tl in both programs. I wish they would update her
bio on the ISU site. Her parents Larisa Selezneva/Oleg Makarov skated pairs for
the former Soviet Union and won medals at worlds, Olympics and the Euro title in
87 when G&G w/d.
She lives and trains in the U.S. and did compete for the U.S. at lower levels.

LOL, this is actually one of the most popular/recognizable music
pieces in Russia. It has been used in skating before (Abt and
Borodulin did SPs to it, and Borodulin is still using his as an
exhibition piece this year) and ISU usually lists it as R. Glier
"Russian Sailor Dance", but it is most commonly known as "Yablochko"
("The Apple"), because of the lyrics.

The problem, however, is that few people in Russia would count it as
"folk". The song itself is quite old, but it was long associated with
Russian/Soviet navy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erfs3G3UDpM) and
later it was became a hit as a sailor dance and one of the signature
pieces for Moiseev Dance Company
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcQVv4j6p1o).

But unless you count "navy" as a separate nation, it's not a exactly a
folk dance.

I attended Regionals and yes, Em is still having trouble with her 3F and 3Z -
underrotating and flipping out. The loop is gone never to be resurrected.
She's left out her 3 jump combo, and only has two, not four triples planned
after the halfway mark, losing valuable points. They also rechoreographed so
that her combo is 3Z/2T not 3F/2T. Emily landed the combo in the SP but not in
the FS. Nice SP by the way.

She has a lot of work to do before Sectionals.
In a couple of weeks Emily does Sectionals to qualify for Nationals. it should
be pretty much of a lock as most of the ladies do not have reliable triples.
Her biggest competition should be Melissa Bulanhangui, Kristina Musademba and
Samantha Cesario. AS long as Emily makes the top four she will go to Nationals.

They were not hiding him. He was runner up to Adam Rippon at the junior worlds
earlier this spring and now he just beat him (because of the 3 axel).
Check this exhibition piece, where he dances and jumps (on slo-mo his 3 axel is
reminiscent of Kulik imo):

I turned the program on in the middle of Joubert's skate (after the quad) and
thought it was some guy just up from juniors or a mid-ranked skater. Then it
slowly dawned on me that it was Joubert. Can you say slow? Clunky faux-Yagudin
footwork, with posing (dead giveaway it was Joubert). Poor spin positions. Did I
mention he was crawling across the ice? At times his footwork seemed to come to
a dead stop -- I didn't think he was ever going to finish his circular footwork.

Arrrgh! They should make the skaters skate anonymously wearing masks.

was the only man to skate clean and almost won the FS.  Joubert was overmarked
in the PCS (reputation scores, what's new), Johnny was clean aside from singling
the loop (he barely got off the ice) yet still only scored 139, Kozuka was
really bad, Takahashi fell twice and had a couple more jump errors (but still
scored 136 thanks to high PCS), Jeremy fell on his opening quad try and then
fell twice more and also singled one of his 3Xs.

great line and expression.

mess).  Lots of missed jumps overall.  Adam hit his first 3X/2T, but later
fell on a second 3X attempt, then singled his 2X.  Argh.  He told Orser that
he "tried to hard on the second one... and the double".  It's all a learning
experience.  Brezina just skated lights out, hit all his jumps and is in the
lead by 20 pts.

After watching it on CBC, they have mentioned that Yuko could've dislocated her
right shoulder.

Kawaguchi/Smirnov didn't skate in the Gala which I assume means she is injured
or at least being cautious.  Hope she's OK.  After they re-started their LP it
was like nothing had happened.  Yuko is a tough cookie.

And Rippon...Adam, Adam, Adam, you really need to go back and work on
that axel, because it's gonna be the death of you. Everything else is
so beautiful. Don't let the axel ruin it all.

Trudi

As Adam came off the ice he said to Coach Orser that he "tried too hard on the
second [triple] axel... and the double" (axel that he singled).  He knows, and
he's in good hands with Mr. Triple Axel as his coach, right, Trudi?  The first
one was a beauty.  IIRC, this is still a fairly new jump for him (at least in a
program setting)... he'll be fine.

I'm more concerned with Jeremy Abbott's being convinced that he needs the quad
in his program when he doesn't.  Jeffrey Buttle won a world championship without
one, and with triple jumps that were not as good as Jeremy's (I love Jeffrey, so
no flaming please).
