Actually Kwan had never said 'no' about this season previously. She had said she
was thinking about it and didn't know. There was a spot at SA left TBA that most
assumed was being held for her to make a decision. It isn't as if there aren't a
dozen US women waiting for a GP event.
I think this was the way to make it public in one place that she was not skating
this season rather then leaving all the rumors, weird website references and
open slots to fuel speculation.

I vaguely recall her saying she was considering a comeback recently.
This smacks more of a "No, don't ask me, the answer is still NO." Kwan
is still a public person. If she just says it here or there, no one is
going to take it seriously, they are going to keep asking. If she
wants the press to stop asking, a press release is the right vehicle.

Press releases aren't for the public (even though we can now read them
often as not) press releases are for the PRESS who is only interested
in skating every 4 years and still thinks her name is Nancy Kwan.

I recall people wondering if Kwan would ever get a college education
because at one point she had only accumulated about a year's worth of

And in other news, Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead, and Tonya
Harding will not be competing during the 2009-10 season either, but she's sure
to do something to get herself into the media spotlight around the time of the
Olympics anyway.

NINE-TIME U.S. FIGURE SKATING CHAMPION MICHELLE KWAN ANNOUNCES SHE WILL NOT
COMPETE IN THE 2009-10 SEASON

  - Two-time Olympian to attend graduate school in the fall –

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 31, 2009) –Nine-time U.S. champion Michelle Kwan
today announced that she will not compete during the 2009-10 season. Kwan will
instead attend graduate school full time at Tufts University's Fletcher School
this fall, where she will pursue a master's degree in international affairs.

Kwan, a five-time World champion and two-time Olympic medalist, last competed in
2005. She had contemplated a return to skating, with the goal of representing
the United States at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in February.

"Skating will always be a part of me," Kwan said. "But, in the bigger picture of
my life, I have always wanted to find a career that will allow me to make a
positive contribution and difference in the world. Representing the United
States as an American Public Diplomacy Envoy the past three years has been very
rewarding, and I want to do more. Furthering my education will bring me closer
to that goal, and I don't want to wait any longer to continue the journey."

Kwan, 29, will continue in her capacity as an American Public Diplomacy Envoy
for the U.S. State Department and a member of the President's Council on
Physical Fitness and Sports. In addition, she will perform in skating
exhibitions, work as a television commentator, serve as a corporate spokesperson
and be involved in special projects as her school schedule permits.

Last month Kwan announced that she will skate before an audience for the first
time in three years when she joins World champion Yu-Na Kim in Ice All-Stars
2009 in Seoul, South Korea, in August.

The most decorated figure skater in U.S. history, Kwan won an unprecedented 43
championships, including five World championships (1996, 1998, 2000, 2001,
2003), eight consecutive and nine overall U.S. championships (1996, 1998-2005)
and two Olympic medals (silver, 1998; bronze, 2002). In the nearly 100-year
history of U.S. figure skating, no American man or woman has won more World or
U.S. titles.

Kwan's activities off the ice have been equally noteworthy. In November 2006,
the U.S. Secretary of State appointed her as the first American Public Diplomacy
Envoy. In this capacity, Kwan travels the world and meets with young people to
speak about leadership and engage them in dialogue on social and educational
issues. In January 2009, Kwan was appointed to the President's Council on
Physical Fitness and Sports, a group that advises President Barack Obama on ways
to promote regular physical activity to improve the health of all Americans.
Kwan graduated from the University of Denver in November 2008 with a degree in
international studies.

Kwan has earned numerous awards and honors including 2003 U.S. Olympic Committee
(USOC) SportsWoman of the Year, 2001 Sullivan Award (top amateur athlete in the
United States), 1998 Sportswoman of the Year by the Women's Sports Foundation,
2002 and 2003 Kids' Choice Award and 2002 Teen Choice Award as America's
favorite female athlete, and a 2002 CosmoGirl! of the Year, for her
accomplishments and inspiration to others.

In 2000, Kwan was selected one of People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People in
the World." In 2003 Kwan earned her seventh SKATING magazine Readers' Choice
Award for Skater(s) of the Year, the only multiple winner of the prestigious
award. In an unprecedented move, U.S. Figure Skating renamed the award in her
honor; it is now called the Michelle Kwan Trophy.

After reconsidering his health status and saying the pain is "manageable", he
decided to try to qualify for the Olympics. He has arrived to Toronto (just
around my corner:) and prepare with Brian Orser.

The rest of the details, where he will appear in order to qualify, you could see

If Plushy will be back, why not Stephane? (now all we need is our Canadian world
champ to change his mind and we will have a rematch for Turin:)

Disson's done the tv contracting for them for the past few years. They're
not involved in the tour itself. From what I understand SOI buys the time
from Disson. It's easier to just have Disson do another 2 hour buy as
part of it's package instead of SOI negotiating separately for it.

Right now apparently the plan is for a combination clip show and
interviews with the Olympic contenders (one would assume those they hope
to sign or might have already). Sort of a promotional show hyping the new
tour to come.

I find it odd to see Stars on Ice under the Disson umbrella. I know SOI
merged with COI, but I thought Disson was a separate entity. I wonder
if Disson is involved only with the production of the TV show and not
the tour itself.

Is it odd that they list an air date of January 3, 2010 for the SOI
show? I thought SOI was starting really late in 2010 (after Worlds more
nearly like the old COI schedule) and that there was no Lake Placid show
this fall. Am I hallucinating? I guess it could be some kind of
retrospective show with clips from past tours.

While looking around the SOI web site for dates (which I couldn't find)
I ran across a news item from last March (which I missed entirely at
the time) about Scott Hamilton returning to skating.
http://www.starsonice.com/figure-skating/?em1=741_-1__0_~0_-1_7_2009_0_0&content\

I assume he isn't talking "return" like Cohen & Plushenko mean, but I'm
thinking it means we may see him in some shows. I wonder if he plans to
do the SOI tour again.

http://www.dissonskating.com gives eight shows for the upcoming season:
Skate for the Heart, Halloween on Ice, Kristi Yamaguchi & Friends,
Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular, Smokey Robinson Tribute on Ice,
Holiday Celebration on Ice, Brian Boitano Skating Spectacular, and
Stars on Ice. Included are the dates of the event, the arena where it is
scheduled to take place, and the NBC airdate. (I find this announcement
rather a pity since I was hoping this increasingly tedious show format
would go away and be replaced by some more interesting skating, but
anyway ...)

The only show for which a cast is given is "Skate for the Heart";
the announced cast consists of US eligible skaters and the announced
music doesn't promise to be particularly skateable.

No, the IOC doesn't own rights to events like we used to see on Wild
World of Sports.

The IOC only sells the rights to the Olympics themselves. I don't think
the USOC channel has plans to bid for those. They are looking at airing
events of the various Olympic sporting federations, like the ISU figure
skating events, World Gymnastics championships, swimming world cup, or
the US National championships and Olympic qualifying competitions. We
used to sometimes see event like these on the big 3 networks or ESPN,
but recently, the only interested bidder has been NBC Universal Sports.

Let's face it, Chicago is a pretty dopey place to
have an Olympics anyway?

When San Francisco have been better?
