Perhaps, but Chan landed a quad in practice at Skate Canada, and
according to a report on CBC, did so to make sure his competitors
knew he had one. While I would agree that there is a big
difference between landing a quad in practice, and landing it in
competition, Patrick is only 17, and the odds he will be landing it
in competition soon, are far greater than that of an older skater.

There is a good reson for it! Likewise was for Buttle, despite the
fact that many people didn't want to give him enough credit for it.
For Patrick as it was for buttle, the SP are an entity, where
everything counts like in COP and they score big in those marks
which used to be "fillers" or call them step sequences.
Patrick's steps sequences are so difficult, edgy footwork, with lots
of turns on toe picks and transitions. He enters from the landing
of his lutz immendiately into his circular step sequences right in
front of the judges, so they have to take notice...Kurt Browning
said is rather risky what Lori Nichol tries with his skaters. And
Patrick indeed slipped at the end of his straight footwork.

As I said I didn't like his 3 axel last year, his landings were
iffy, but apparently he worked on it, entering in the axel from a
different angle, however, today it didn't show, the landing was
rather low.

The mens event is shaping up as very interesting, this time around
the quad was well represented:

1. Y. Ponsero. Very meritous first place, flawless all the way, he
jumps big and skates well, Tracy said his skating is elevated a
notch in every department (jumps, spins and footwork), he looks
reinvented, making a choreographic statement. He blew away his
previous best with 9 points and it'll be very interesting to see if
he holds it together or crumbles like last year when he dropped from
second to sixth. he had a huge quad toe / 2 toe, huge triple axel
and a good lutz.

2. P. Chan came behind with aprox. 0.6 with his 3 axel, 3 flip / 3
toe and 3 lutz.

3 R. Bradley - I love this guy. "never boring" as Kurt says or
a "breath of fresh air" as Tracy, Ryan comes up with original
programs which makes sense to him. He is a crowd pleaser. He landed
a huge quad and his triple behind had no flow so he flipped out of
it, a very big axel. he's improved his spin positions, stretched but
still slow.

4. Evan is he in a big trouble! I feel sorry for him because he
doesn't skate bad at all. He flipped out of his lutz in the combo so
he had to put a foot down to take an extra step before tackling his
3 toe...after that it didn't count as a combo anymore. He is now in
forth and with a 6 points deficit behind second place, even if he
finishes third, the qualification for the GPF will depend on other
skaters, or "he will not control his own destiny"

Voronov finished 5th, beautiful jumping (quad combo and 3 axel) but
th rest of his program needs a lot of work, looks emtpy in
comparison with the best in this field.

Shawn sawyer won a mini battle with himself landing the 3 axel on
one foot, but lost his balance and still was short of full rotation
and got downgraded.

Rochette posted her highest mark for a short program
and it is now her personal best.

Okay, I just finished watching the Ladies SP

It will be interesting to compare Rochette's and Suguri's GOE's. Rochette had
the turns
between the combo and it looked like she ended after her music. Suguri had that
spin that
went flying across the ice. I'm not sure which I'd put first.

Despite the fall, I though Zhang skated well. Can't wait until tomorrow to see
how the ice
flies.

I'm watching on the Icenetwork right now. Despite the falls, I've enjoyed most
of the ladies
so far.

I am always blown away by Liang, especially her SP's. I guess some might say
her SP was too
busy, but I found it always interesting and full of attack.

Marks are posted for the Short Program of Skate Canada.

http://www.isufs.org/results/gpcan08/SEG001.HTM

What is amazing, is the 17 year old Patrick Chan scored solid 7.00 and way
above in all
sections of the PC score.

I do believe that the controversy concerning Jeff about no quad, will also
follow Chan pending
his perfecting the Quad for competition.

I don't know any skaters who walk on water, just skaters who skate on
frozen water.

I just watched a bit of the ladies short program. What a lovely skater
Cynthia Phaneuf is, though her jumps deserted her in this program.
Her costume wins my fashion award for the most elegant of the season.
Does anyone know who did that costume?

In my opinion, the Kerrs definitely "won" the Exhibitions, closely
followed by Lysacek. They did their original dance from last season --
the one in kilts; that was about the loudest I heard the crowd roar
all weekend.

I am a total lurker so I don't know how to give the Url, but on YouTube, there
is a clip of the Kerrs at the Skate America Gala. She lifts him, twice! Then
John does a short man/man "pairs" spot with guess who?
The male gold medalist! John lifts and throws him! I can't believe no one has
seen this; it is so cute.

Things have certainly deteriorated in ice dancing if this program is
the best smile we get out of SA. It is so reminiscent of
Lang&Thcernyshev --- like a "mini them" version of Naomi&Petr. It
does have one very very good thing --- they kept up the pace
and "into-the-ice-ness" of the routine ... so even though its
derivative quality bugged me, it eventually began to charm ... but
the quality of the unison and inventiveness of the steps is not good
enough (or maybe I mean shouldn't be good enough) to get us all
dancing down the street and breaking out into "I could Have Danced
All Night.,," or "ive got a wonderful feeling, everthings going my
way."

I no longer keep the necessary high-heels in my closet for this type
of thing, but I know others are better prepared should a good ice
dance routine present itself <GG>

Ben Currie, who I know, I know, has disappointed any number of
people, by not being carried away by the cute guy in the sailor suit.

Thanks for the link!  I'm so blase about skating now that I couldn't get up
the interest to search for a clip of their performance on YouTube myself.
They certainly look like a well trained team with:  nice fast twizzles, great
unison, good speed, solid footwork, excellent posture, and a high-energy,
entertaining program.  Perhaps the lifts could be a little more inventive, but
they're still crisply delivered and executed..  They also have presence on the
ice and appear well matched, in terms of height and skills.  All in all, another
promising, young team for the US!

That is unlikely to happen. Unfortunately, Shawn developed a habit
to two foot his 3 axel, I keep seeing this in the last 5 years or
so...
I was wondering why some great technicians in the Canadian team
don't help him to correct this flaw which holds him back!
The response came this past week end from Kurt Browning...He and
Brian Orser toured with Shawn and they tried to teach him how to
push through his triple axel as became so obvious for everyone, but
he doesn't get enough elevation and as he knows that, he will try to
rotate faster than he should and that speed actually brings the jump
down earlier. He has a big chance this year to get back on the team
with Buttle retired and Mabee taking the year off, but I am
skeptical I will see him correcting his axel

The "lip" freaks me out. The essential complaint is that the "perp"
is doing a HARDER jump than a Flip, a much harder jump in fact, and
thus should be penalized for doing a harder trick.

Actually, the Yu-na "lip" vid illustrates my [bothersome] point that
toe jumps almost always leave the ice ambiguously --- usually off the
forward part of blade that doesn't even have an edge OR off what for
all intents and purposes is a "FLAT" -- that "part" of the blade
between the inside and outside edge.

Dick Button complains when the INSIDE edge in the Flip preparation is
on too deep of a curvy edge ... he likes them to basically go
straight down the ice before the toe-in .... that's cuz turning the
three-turn and gliding straight back down the ice is harder than
doing the three-turn and continuing on the inside curvy edge.

And that's why Weir's mohawk to the back inside edge as his prep for
his Flip never quite works so hot, cuz it is not a strong "checked"
position after a strong three-turn. But everybody had a bugaboo
jump ... How many times did we see Todd save that blown salchow take
off?

The USFSA has the planned element sheets up for SkateCanada. Front
loading is common, with almost half the girls doing the jumps
elements 1,2,3 including Zhang. All but one of the rest are doing
1,2,4 or 1,2,5. Only one skater is not keeping to one of these
patterns and is, in fact, the only skater not using a jump for her
first element, Liang! Her jumps are 2,5,7 out of the eight listed
elements giving her, in my opinion, the best planned balanced SP>

My favorite listed element...*** **** Element Not Found! ****
I didn't know the judges had that button, but it explains SOOOO very
much :-)

I didn't bother with the under-rotation bit, but the "lip" video is
pretty funny! Nothing like using the ISU's own technical video to

You are too kind! Thank you. She has grown a bit, physically that is.
Her jumps seem to be in an "adjustment" phase.

I remember when skaters actually skated as if the music playing
around them had some connection to what they were doing.
Blah is a good word for her. She doesn't complete choreographical
moves and drops all pretense of posture and character when
approaching a trick. Some of her jumps have nice height and great air
position, but a artisitc interpreter of music, well...

Tessa and Scott have been in the studio at the CBC transmission of
Skate America and they stated their priority is Tessa's recovery, so
they won't rush it...smart kids, not just talented:)

And surprise, I found the interview on youtube:

I checked out this young new team. pretty much a Naomi & Petr
retread --- choreographically. Same funny thing with her forward
progressives Naomi had (un-crispy, more running across the ice than
progressing with clarity) But they are young; I imagine they'll give
me some more hcances to get on their bandwagon. The program is not
in league with the Kerr's and their placing ahead in the FD segment
is absurd.

But back to the end of history -- The Kerrs keep improving. They
keep taking choreographic chances. That's about par for course with
the world top ten in any given year. Also, we do not know if the
young Canadians will be healthy enough or what their material will be
like if they can compete this season. Similarly, Pechelat&Co. are
capable of choreographic imagination.

That's a world podium I could love with all my heart

1. Virtue & M
2. Kerrs
3. Pechelat

I realise we'll be lucky if they can manage 7th-9th, when the brain-
dead judges imput their numbers into the brain-dead COP system.

On the other hand, unlike the perversity that makes people slow down
and stare at violent traffic accidents, there is no bottom to how bad
ice dancing can get ... ice dancing, uniquely, has no floor beneath
which it cannot fall. <G>

I'm shocked, shocked, that you would defend the pupil of her world
famous coach.

But I thought it was all ice they were skating on, little did I know it
was in fact water some of them walk on.

It's true that top level ladies skaters are more or less limited
to 5'2" and under and about 100lbs. But NFL offensive lineman
need to be around 6'4" and 315lbs....in both cases genetics
eliminate the vast majority of potential players.

Wow! So many good observations and good lines in this that it's hard to pick a
favorite, but
maybe this would be it: "Glorifying a tiny genetic minority that can twirl in
the air and
treating the rest as chopped liver is a selection process, not a productive
way to run a sport."

Probably my second favorite was the line about the majority of the audience at
figure skating
events being "the long line of bureaucrats operating the scoring system." ;-)

I agree completely. Actually, Samuuelson & Bates's OD was the most
enjoyable thing in ALL of SKAM for me. Nothjing else even liike like
freaking skating any more.
