Hi once again,

I have a hotel reservation in Louisville for Wednesday through
Saturday: two beds, non-smoker, driving up from TN so I'll have my own
car. If anyone wants to share. let me know (PM or trilby23 at ldktn
dot com).

Looking forward to meeting some of you there!

Both Glencoe and Glenora are "private" clubs which have significant
member fees on top of ice time and coaching. Neither Calalta nor
Sherwood Park are private. Calalta skates out of Jimmy Congdon arena
on Heritage and Macleod in Calgary. It's a pretty decent facility as
far as public arenas go.

You might also want to check out Ice Palace in Edmonton. They skate
out of West Edmonton Mall and one or two other rinks in the
south/southwest section of the city. At one time, Ravi Walia was
coaching for the Ice Palace; I've been removed from that level of
skating for a few years now, so I don't know if he's still there or if
he's moved to the Glencoe.

All the above-mentioned clubs have good-quality coaching -- it would
be a matter of what you're looking for in a coach and how much you can
afford on top of ice time and other specific skating fees.

We are not sure yet as to the city, might be Edmonton or Calgary...I

Glencoe,Calata,Royal Glenora and Sherwood Parsk.

Wester/Barantsev won the free dance to win; the Beiers moved up
another notch to end up 2nd overall ahead of the Ukrainians.

Kostner won the free skate by 20 and the competition by over 30
points, but Megan Williams-Stewart of the US pulled up to second,
about .5 ahead of Lepisto. Dytrt was 4th, and Sebestyen channeled
Delmore from the men's FS and pulled up to 5th overall (4th in the
free). Alisa Drei had a disastrous free and faded to 15th (16th in
the free). Kahle was 8th in the free, which pulled her up to 13th
overall, while Karademir faded to 11th (14th in the free).

The judges here were stingy with Kahle's program component scores,
which were well below Karademir's. They were generally in the mid-
4.x's, comparable to Glebova's or Ana Cecilia Cantu's. (By
comparison, Megan Williams-Stewart's were in the upper-5.x's,
comparable to Martinova's.) So although Kahle's technical score was
the same as Lepisto's and Sebestyen's, she was 10 points behind them
in the free skate.

Protocol PDF's are also up now.

Castile/Okolski must have withdrawn before the competition started,
since they weren't on the official start list. As it was, the Poles
withdrew before the SP, and Italians before the FS, leaving only 6
pairs to finish.

According to Travelocity the Hilton Garden Inn, 175 West Kellogg Blvd.
still has rooms at $259 per night during that time frame. You could
call them directly at 1-651-291-8800. It was totally renovated in the
Spring. An extra person would be $10 more per night. Splitting it 3
or 4 ways wouldn't be so bad. The rooms have frigs., microwaves and
coffee makers so you could save on eating out.

Tomas Verner must have had a nightmarish free skate
(only 38 points for technical components), was 9th in
the free, and ended up 3rd overall. His compatriot
Brezina won the free skate and the title, with
Shaun Rogers of the US taking the silver. Derrick
Delmore was 4th in the free skate to rise to 5th overall
behind Macypura. Uspenski faded to 7th behind
Vaughn Chipeur of Canada.

In pairs, Savchenko/Skolkowy unsurprising won by
nearly 30 points. Evora/Ladwig, 2nd in the free,
could not quite catch Duhamel/Buntin, finishing 3rd behind them.

After the OD, Wester/Barantsev are still in the lead;
the Beiers have moved up to third behind
Beknazarova/Zuev.

After the ladies' short program, Kostner has a 8-1/2
point lead over Dytrt, with Lepisto in 3rd and
Megan Williams-Stewart in 4th (ahead of Alisa Drei).
Tugba Karademir is 7th. Sebestyen and Kahle
are 10th and 15th, respectively.

I'm into skating and golf and now that the skating is waiting for the
take off of the regular season I want to pass this along.

David Feherty is one of my favorite golf announcers and commentators and
also writes pretty funny articles.

This is one from 2002 that has a few references to skating that I
thought the group might enjoy.

AFAIK the Beiers of Germany should have been the favorites as they
have been to worlds and Euros finishing 13th at both in 2006 but they
missed all of last season due to her injury.

Bizarre? or maybe highly predictable? Hopefully this will kill off
this idea. Judges have a hard enough time marking the same dance
consistently, but asking them to mark three different dances in a way
that is consistent and fair would have to be 10x harder.

What was the objective behind this idea - that multiple dances would
make the event more audience appealing? (And what, I ask, could
possibly be more entertaining than 32 consecutive Argentine Tangos? ...
unless it is perhaps 32 consecutive Westminster Waltzes?)

Can someone better acquainted with the field comment on whether
the rankings look about right ignoring the apparent sorting by
which dance was skated?

Results main page:

Wester/Barantsev are leading Beknazerova/Zuev (UKR)--
is this W/B's long-delayed international debut?

Men's SP and Pairs' SP results are up now:

http://www.deu-event.de/results/Nebelhorn_2007/SEG001.HTM

Tomas Verner way in front, Shaun Rogers and Michal Brezina (CZE)
essentially tied with a narrow lead over 4th place
Igor Macypura, who's in turn 2+ points ahead of Alexander
Uspenski. Derrick Delmore is back in 9th.

Savchenko and Skolkowy blew away the field, with
the new Canadian team of Duhamel/Buntin
solidly in second, followed by the other Canadian
team and the two US teams.

Well for years neophytes like myself have thought Team A might
have an advantage if the dance were a polka while Team B might
be much stronger with a waltz.

Not true, we were told, the judges are looking at skills that don't
vary from dance to dance (also the explanation for why placements
seldom vary from CD through OD and FD)

If this is true, than skating to one of three different dances drawn
at random shouldn't make much of a difference to the skaters or
the judging.

Gosh I hoped no one would notice this. The ISU only concern about
having Erik on the panels is the issue of sleeping while judging, a
common problem even with fully human judges.

Thus, the "entertaining" alternating of compulsory dances ... Polka,
waltz, Tango ... to keep the panel as wide awake as possible.

It makes no sense, of course, and is done purely for the convenience
of the ISU officals, as, er, is the entire cherade .... THINK of the
irony of "teaching" someone COP by video as if that helped them know
anything about ice skating. If cats could laugh ....

From the latest news article posted at IceNetwork.com below are Paragraph 2 and
3...
The Nebelhorn Trophy has traditionally been used by the International Skating
Union to experiment with new judging and scoring systems, and this year is no
exception. This time, a new format of competition in compulsory dance will be
implemented. The dance couples will be divided into starting groups, and the
groups will skate different compulsory dances, instead of the same one. The
technical elements of each dance have differing base point values, but the
disparity is supposed to be evened out. For the skaters, the main difference to
the traditional system is the fact that now they don't know which compulsory
dance they are going to perform until they arrive in Oberstdorf.

An even wider smorgasbord of previously unseen rhythms will be served in the
original dance, where any type of "authentic folk country" is allowed, ranging
from African rhythms to Russian gypsy dances.

Those are the three rhythms for this year's senior events. I think it
just means they have not yet had the draw to select which rhythm will be
   used in this event yet.

No, they really are having the dancers all skate different compulsories;
look at the start order for the CD where it identifies which dance each
couple will skate.

Nebelhorn is the competition where they always experiment with new
judging formats. It was the first event where they used OBO, the first
one where they tested the CoP, the one where they experimented with
split judging panels for elements and program components, etc. The
German federation likes to dink with the rules, I guess.

While looking over the start orders I noticed that the ice dancers will
skate to one of three different CDs, Austrian Waltz, Yankee Polka,
Argentine Tango. Did I miss something or is this being done at other
international competitions this season? Is the value for each dance
the same? Comments? Erik?

Well, everybody has to learn somehow. No one was born knowing how to judge,
just as no one was born knowing how to skate or to coach.

An eligible skater not
competing was with me and snickered at the new judges lack of
knowledge of the sport.

Edmonton and Calgary are 200 miles apart - can you be a bit more
specific as to the area you are going to? Here's a link to the Skate
Canada Alberta Section website which has information for the whole province:

If you are looking for a high performance club in Edmonton I would
suggest you check out the Royal Glenora. Kurt Browning, Kristi
Yamaguchi and Sale & Pelletier all trained there, as have a number of
other Canadian and International champions. (Sale & Pelletier still
practice there and do some coaching as well).

As for ice time outside the clubs - I guess it depends upon what you
are looking for. Edmonton is a winter city - there are plenty of
outdoor & indoor rinks for leisure skating in the city and
surrounding areas, as well as other skating clubs.

In Calgary you may want to check out the Glencoe Club:
