No, Orser only won Worlds once.

Frank,

Wouldn't Brian Orser fall into this category as well?

Fred - you never cease to make me laugh! Great story and thanks for
sharing!

I had a similar experience with one of my favorites after a COI.

I had a backstage pass and waited patiently for "my skater" to emerge
from the facilities. He finally came out and I lurched to the front to
get a picture and an autograph. I dropped my Sharpie and in bending
over to pick it up, he did too and we cracked heads!!! Embarrassed
much? Anyway all was cool and I got my photo and my autograph with a
note, "Thanks for the lump on my head"!

Even skaters who are used to it probably don't like it much. It
makes me think of a movie theatre audience chewing popcorn, which
they wouldn't do if seeing a live play.

I had a crush on Marina...I know you have read this sort of thing from me
before...after the draw ceremony at the Sorbonne in Paris at the 89 Worlds I
walked into the open door of a bus because I was staring at her...my wife
still laughs about this.

But her hair wasnt, I thought, always her best feature. I remember at worlds
in Budapest the previous year a large swath of it was green.....and my wife
and I saying to each other, "that can't have been what they had in mind.."

If you look at it another way, though, it makes lots of sense.

Think of it this way: how many three-year cycles between Olympics has
the ladies' title not been won by the same skater? Lots of 'em. In
fact, there's been a number of years that the ladies' title has been
won by *three* different skaters, including the last three years:
Kwan-Arakawa-Slutskaya. Leading up to 98 it was Chen-Kwan-Lipinski.
Leading up to 92 it was Ito-Trenary-Yamaguchi. And so on.

What that does, in effect, is increase the odds that a female Olympic
champion will have previously won a Worlds--because more of them in
the field *have*.

The abberation, really, is Kwan. Speaking only of ladies's singles
here--since figure skating became a regular part of the Olympics,
there have been a number of ladies that have won one or two Worlds
that never won the Olympics. Kwan's the *only* one to win *more* than
two Worlds and never win the Olympics.

Speaking of abberations, that's on the ladies' side. On the men's
side, there are three skaters that have won more than two Worlds but
never won the Olympics--Emmerich Danzer, Kurt Browning, and Elvis
Stojko. One can make the case that the Olympics are more of an
abberation on the men's side.

I think she wasn't talking about where she is being loved more: in Russia or in
the US. She just stated that figure
skating lovers are different in different countries with different culture. And
I guess she surely didn't mean to
offend anyone.
I've attended different shows and competitions here in Moscow and - that's true
- I didn't see people eating something
while skaters' performances at shows and saw very few spectators eating while
competitions (which last longer).
As for me I would never let myself chew anything at the event. If I'm very
hungry I can go out anytime and eat as much
as I want to. But if it's OK in North America I just take it as it is. No
problem.
BTW there's something that I really HATE in my native Russian audience. It is
leaving the rink before the medal
ceremony. grrrrrr!

Since 1972 the Ladies title at worlds has changed hands more times
than the mens title. The singles titles have changed hands more than
the Pair title, and the Pair title has changed hands more than the
Dance title.

Put another way, since 1972 there have been more ladies champs,
fewer men have won worlds, fewer still Pairs have won it, and even
less dance couples have captured it.

Because it has been consistently more likely that someone new would
win ladies or that someone who wasn't last years' champ would win
it, it has correspondingly always been more likely (compared to the
other disciplines) that someone new would win the Olympics.

More likely ... but it has not always proved true in the end:

Men without a prior title who won Olympics: Curry, Cousins,
Petrenko, Urmanov, Kulik .. 5 of 10 from '72 to '06

Hamill, Witt (in '84), Hughes ... 3 of 10

Kazakova ('98) .... 1 of 10

Gritschuk ('94) ... 1 of 9

I'd say that where 29 of the 39 Olympic Champions from '72 to '06
held at least one prior world title means that the Olympics are not
an aberrant event.

Ah, yes. You are right. I unfortunately missed that, because I was
living in Rochester, New York at the time, and the local affiliate
decided to chack CBS's live coverage and show it that Sunday night

I was so angry.

Not that a year is a big deal but are you sure you aren't remembering
Baltimore in '89? Maybe I'm misremembering but from what I recall, both
Peggy and Dorothy Hamill gave birth on the same day in 1988: September
19.

According to Skatabase, the Belgian lady at 1984 Worlds was Katrien
Pauwels. Does that ring a (typewriter) bell?

Talk about a memory for trivia. I remember that in 1984, the Belgian
competitor in the Ladies event used this music for her short program. She
wore a navy blue dress with a white Peter Pan collar and white gloves. Now
why can I remember that and not her name?

Good Grief!

That e-mail was posted shortly after the ladies event at the Olys. I
have NO IDEA why it is just showing up now!

As to the question about eligibility - I had no idea then really and no
idea now. Was just musing.

Sorry folks!!!

Well Sarah could now be considered one of the top 6 skaters in the
world, and she did beat Joannie at Worlds on Joannie's home turf. No
one is questioning the Canadian's invite. Sarah has busted her butt
for every placement this year. I'd say she's more than earned her
invite based on her skating and not her looks. Korpi, on the other
hand...

I wouldn't be surprised if Shizuka is skating an exhibition because she hasn't
had time to train for any kind of competition since the Olympics.

Well aimed, and I'll admit to it. But, as I understand it, except for
events like swimming where the only thing that matters is if you get to the
wall .01 ahead of the girl in the next lane, there are sociological studies
up to my belly-button documenting that for women, being attractive is a
measureable advantage in just about every activity of life..although some
will apparently say, "but it doesnt count in figure skating."
