I got the biggest kick out of Katia's and Ilia's daughter, Elizaveta (sp?).
That girl is a firecracker... I was ROFL laughing the first 30 seconds of
Katia's program because Elizaveta was yelling "Mom" every five or 10 seconds,
clearly audible over the quiet music.

All of the kids are adorable. Scott's son looks just like photos I've seen of
him as a kid.

Most of the skating was so-so, but Kurt's revamped clown routine was a hoot.

It was an adorable show with all the kids. And once again I love to

trish,

My goodness, I laughed and laughed when I read his comments. 'she's a
little orange' is what we've been saying all season! And complaining about
Buttle not landing a quad -- well, guilty as charged, and Sasha getting creamed
on
components against Asada?

I think he can fill Button's shoes quite nicely...

there and skate. Stop talking about it and get out there and do
it!Even Michelle (Kwan) should have been out there earlier, it would
have been great to see her at a Grand Prix event."

"Yeah, I'm disappointed in the judging too. Take Cohen versus Asada at
the French Grand Prix event: Sasha's component scores were lower than
Mao Asada's and that's just horrifically wrong â€" just wrong, wrong,
wrong...Jeffrey Buttle has won without even landing a triple axel this
season, so I'd say there's plenty to be disappointed in."

"What do we have, like fifty skaters going to Nikolai (Morozov) and
another fifty going to that Canadian guy? Miki Ando looks nothing like
herself this season. Stephane Lambiel is doing things differently this
year, but he's not injured and big props to him for doing the Grand
Prix circuit. His spins look great, he's always had intricate
programs, and now he has the jumps to go with it. (Laughing)"

I'm back in town (and no, while mud slides are nearby and the cow pasture

I think that the USFSA's plan is reasonably well thought through.
Data input errors shouldn't be allowed to stand, and neither should
jump misidentifications. We've all heard Button call enough elements
incorrectly; to assume that callers might make mistakes too is
reasonable. Not allowing changes of called levels or rotations is also
reasonable under field of play decisionmaking -- if it was allowed, it
would be days or weeks before we'd get the results of any competition.

However, how quickly after a performance does the skater and his or
her coach get to see what elements were called? Unless there is some
reasonable time to review this then it all becomes rather moot. The
last skater in final group should still have time to review the called
elements before the results are finalized -- but I can't see ABC
wanting to wait to announce who won the ladies final at US Nationals
for twenty minutes.

Me:

This is doubly true given the USFSA's plan for draws for the final group,
which, for singles, consists of a "mini-draw" among the top three SP
finishers...

Well of course, if Kwan falls off the podium, they have to go back
and downgrade Alissa's (or whoever's) spirals that were actually only
2.9 seconds long, to make sure Kwan gets covered. This is reading
plain as day.

This adds an interesting new set-up to the results. You can go back
and change the results. That spiral only 2.9 seconds? Doesn't
count.

I'm waiting for the big controversy to finally explode. --Liam

Anke G. has asked me to copy-and-paste her reply to Naomi's call for
help since yahoogroups won't let her post. Happy New Year to all
Skatefans! --Sylvia
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Anke G's reply:

My husband is taking a break from work as we wrap up the family
reunion at Orlando (ever done Disney World with 17 people, 8 of whom
are under 12?) so I have access to the laptop and can answer the
burning questions about Robin Szolkowy and his partners. :)

First, Johnny's comment about Aliona being orange...

I'm sure he thought he was being funny, referring to the fact that
Aliona is Ukrainian. Orange was the color of the opposition
candidate who ultimately became president of Ukraine after mass
protests over voter fraud and corruption. That stand for democracy
in 2004 became known as the Orange Revolution. (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_Revolution )

The babelfish translation of the article about Robin Szolkowy...

Loved the part about Ingo tax (Steuer) and Colonel village
(Oberstdorf).

Naomi is right that babelfish messed with Claudia Rauschenbach's
name.

"Rausch" the noun is intoxication, though "rauschen" the verb is
rushing, hence babelfish should have come up with "rushing brook."
In any case, the only reports I can find on her career simply say she
retired from competition. One report does say she became too big for
Robin ( http://www.stefkasworld.de/sns/sns2.html ).

"Mutter" is either mother or nut, as in nuts and bolts, and
apparently babelfish couldn't decide. :)

A bit about Robin's background...

Robin's father was from Tanzania and went to med school in East
Germany. (Robin was born in 1979, 10 years before the fall of the
wall. My guess is that Robin, Aliona, and Ingo communicate in
Russian, since Aliona spoke no German when she arrived in the
country...she's taking classes to fix that.)

According to Alexandra Stevenson's SC article, Robin's parents never
married.
http://www.iceskatingintnl.com/current/content/2005sk8can%20p.htm
Hence, his surname may be his mother's name, and since they are from
the northeast corner of Germany, close to the Polish border, that may
explain the name. Just a guess on my part.

Yes, Robin was skating synchro when Aliona emailed about a pairs
tryout.

Yes, Aliona became a German citizen on December 29. News came during
German Nationals that the interior minister of Saxony (German state
which includes Chemnitz) approved it, and there was much jubilation.
I'm sure there will be more to report after the long weekend when the
federation posts its reports on the event.

I'll be back online by Wednesday and will report any news. Germany
is using Europeans to help determine who goes to the Olympics, so I
doubt a decision has been made about Lindemann yet. It's probably a
decision about whether or not to send anyone in men's and ladies',
not who to send.

Happy New Year!

Hi all,
I managed to catch only the last 10 minutes of Kristi's special this
afternoon--I forgot it was on, and then when my mom called and reminded me,
there
was a power outage!

Anyhow, when I was able to turn it on, there were 2 pairs couples skating to
Kenny Rogers who was singing live, "Through the Years". One couple was
Jenni Meno & Todd Sand. The second couple for some reason I didn't recognize!
Both had dark hair. At the end of the song, each couple was handed their
child and they skated around holding their children (cute!)

Anyhow, it was probably pretty obvious, but--who was that second couple?
Somehow it didn't look like any pair couple that I could place.

I loved seeing all the skaters' kids at the end of the show!!

Thanks!

US Immigration allows visas for people with "special talents", and I
think this is just an extention of that. Your average Ukranian,
Peruvian or Indonesian can't get a work visa, but Angela Gheorgiu
(sp?) or Kylie Minogue can enter and work / perform in the US because
they possess special talents. This is also true for skaters - Irina
Slutskaya can come make an appearance and get paid.

Now US Immigration allows people who serve in the US Military
expediated citizenship too. Their "special talent" is the willingness
to put their bodies at risk of injury / death from IEDs, bullets,
morters, or getting kidnapped and murdered in a gruesome manner by
terrorists.

What about people who get expedited visas just because they marry
Americans? Why should Joe Schmoe from UK who is unmarried have to
wait, but his brother Jim Schmoe from UK married me (this is all
hypothetical), and now I can get him a visa? I think US Immigration
is biased towards true love - or at least the appearance of it. ;)

Naomi wrote, regarding Johnny's interview:
Calling someone 'the black guy' in a sport that is overwhelmingly
white is careless but not bigoted...

Me here:
I was put off by his carelessness on such a fraught topic. But I'm
the grown-up (40 years old, not 20 like Mr. Weir) who was a bull in
the china shop on the topic of sexuality and self-presentation
earlier this year on this very list. So when Johnny says "black guy"
I immediately go all, "No you di'n't." When I commented on Johnny's
costuming and make-up, etc. a bunch of people on this list
immediately said, "Oh no you di'n't." Different fraught topics and
associated carelessness hit different people's buttons.

I believe it was Amy P. who noted that Johnny seems to like getting
negative attention as much as positive attention. I think she is on
to something. Johnny seems to enjoy being controversial. "I gotta
be me, I gotta say everything I think" is his deal right now. I
would imagine by age 30, he will have mellowed. Usually as people
grow older, they get tired of yelling, "I gotta be me" at the top of
their lungs and just enjoy being themselves.

Then again, Elton John is still stirring the sh** at 50-plus, with
his recent revisiting of his spat with Madonna as proof. Elton is
talented as hell and never dull. As is Johnny. (Aside, how about
a "Bi**h is back" exhibition some day from Johnny. If Tom Collins
asked Rudy to do YMCA season after season, surely the old guy could
see the crowd-pleasing potential of a Johnny-Elton combo.)

I hope he skates great at Nationals and Olys. As he himself said,
it's time for him to stop being the whiny skater and start being the
kick-a**, consistent skater he was throughout the GPF last year.

It appears that while the legislation was in the works, the two skaters
worked with their local CIS (formerly INS) officials to have everything
in place. It strikes me that in any typical Government office of 30 or
so people, you can probably find one or two who watch enough figure
skating to understand what was happening and think it was cool to be
able to be part of the solution. (Their bosses may also have gotten a
note from the interested Senators/ Congressmen as soon as it appeared
this amendment had a good chance of success.)

I don't recall Tara being criticized just for always talking about
herself, but rather because the things she said about herself seemed
so shallow. Everything was always "great", etc. There seemed to be
no "there", there -- which isn't the impression one gets when Johnny
talks about his own skating.

IMO, the bottom line is that it really doesn't matter what any
skater says in any interview. People who have decided they don't like a
skater and are looking for something to criticize will still manage to
    find it.

True.

They have 60 days to pay while pending. In the meantime, their email
doesn't work either.

And better to do the backorder at godaddy.com, it's cheaper.

Speedy and his minions apparently had more important things to worry
about this fall than renewing their domain name.

I think we should backorder the domain name ($60 if we get it, nothing
if we don't.)

Being a pairs skater, I bet Ken Shelley shirtless might be something to see.

From my miniscule knowledge of Yiddish I think that's the translation
of her last name. Like "Lime-Tree Man." Where's Anke when we need her?

From Babelfish translation of German Robin Szolkowy article:

"Later Robin Szolkowy with Claudia Rauschenbach started and became with their
2001 German masters in the ice art running with the pairs of sports. The pair
trained with Monika disk in Chemnitz. Claudia intoxication brook terminated its
ice art run career."

But seriously, what is "Claudia intoxication brook"? Did Claudia Rauschenbach
have a drinking problem or something?

"After long search and participation in the synchronous ice art running he
found a new Partnerin in Aljona Sawtschenko, originally from the Ukraine."

Does this mean Szolkowy did synchronized skating while looking for a new
partner? Cool.
