Yes, they usually sell them in advance, and if you are coming from a different area, it's recommended you purchase them ahead of time. Last years nationals at Salt Lake City, you had a choice between the VIP tickets and the regular seating (we recomend the vip, general seating wasn't all that hot last year) This year's Nationals will be in St Louis, so it's a whole new ball game.
Gerenal seating was around $15, VIP's were around $45. That may be different this year. Just giving you an idea.

Also, tickets usually go on sale around a month or so before the event. Sometimes it's 2 months, but it's not something that you could buy tickets to right...
Both SLC events at the Oval were through brown paper tickets. You can purchase your will call tickets on line. St Louis may choose another vendor. I don't know...
