... Yes, they usually sell them in advance, and if you are coming from a different area, it's recommended you purchase them ahead of time. Last years nationals...
Also, tickets usually go on sale around a month or so before the event. Sometimes it's 2 months, but it's not something that you could buy tickets to right...
Both SLC events at the Oval were through brown paper tickets. You can purchase your will call tickets on line. St Louis may choose another vendor. I don't know...
