The Anaheim Ducks, parent club of the AHL's Portland Pirates, announced that they have signed right wings Pierre Parenteau and Shawn Thornton to one-year contracts.

Per club policy, no financial terms of the deals were disclosed.

Parenteau, 23, ranked third on the Portland Pirates in scoring with 49 points (22g, 27a) in 56 regular-season games in 2005-06. He also placed sixth in the entire AHL in postseason scoring with 22 points (5g, 17a) in 19 Calder Cup Playoff contests. Parenteau scored the series-clinching overtime goal in Game 6 of Portland's division final victory over Hartford.

A native of Hull, Que., Parenteau has tallied 53 goals and 67 assists for 120 points in 198 career AHL games with Portland and Cincinnati. He was a ninth-round draft pick by Anaheim in 2001.

Shawn Thornton has racked up nearly 2,500 minutes in penalties over nine AHL seasons.

Thornton recorded 10 goals and 22 assists for a career-best 32 points, along with 192 penalty minutes, in 59 games for the Norfolk Admirals in 2005-06. He also went scoreless with 16 PIM in 10 NHL contests for Chicago.

A native of Oshawa, Ont., Thornton ranks third on the AHL's all-time penalty minutes leaderboard with 2,423 PIM. He has also contributed 57 goals and 96 assists for 153 points in 590 career AHL games over nine seasons with Norfolk (2001-06) and St. John's (1997-2001).

Thornton, who has two goals, one assist and 70 PIM in 31 career NHL matches, was originally drafted by Toronto in 1997.

These are a few notes I had saved on my computer, so I thought I'd
post them.

April 11: The American Hockey League today announced that Norfolk
Admirals forward Shawn Thornton has been suspended for two (2)
regular-season games as a result of his actions during Sunday's AHL
game vs. the Philadelphia Phantoms. Shawn fought after the final
buzzer had sounded to end the game. Thornton will miss Norfolk's games
on Wednesday (Apr. 12) and Friday (Apr. 14), both vs. Binghamton.

"He'd rather bring you into his office and talk to you man to man,"
says Shawn Thornton, one of the Admirals' revolving captains. "There's
a lot of communication going back and forth. It's made this year a lot
shorter, I feel."
--speaking about coach Mike Haviland

Article:
Tough guy has led Hershey onslaught
By TRIS WYKES, The Virginian-Pilot © April 25, 2006

The most influential player in the current AHL playoff series between
the Norfolk Admirals and Hershey Bears has no points. At times, he
doesn't even skate a regular shift. But make no mistake, Hershey's
Louis Robitaille has been the match-up's main man thus far.

Fighting and overly chippy play aren't usually highlighted in the
playoffs, but Robitaille has brought such behavior front and center in
the best-of-seven, East Division semifinal series. Hershey leads 3-0
and can eliminate Norfolk with a victory tonight in Game 4 at Giant
Center.

"We felt that when push came to shove in the regular season, they
backed down,' said Admirals coach Mike Haviland, whose team was 7-3
against the Bears before the playoffs and 4-1 against them in
Pennsylvania. "But now, they're playing in-your-face hockey and it's
thrown us for a loop.'

The Bears have made sure scrums follow almost every whistle, with
Robitaille and teammate Boyd Kane slashing at Admirals' calves or
jamming a glove in their faces when the referee's back is turned.

Robitaille enraged Norfolk fans by challenging Admirals captain Shawn
Thornton in Game 2 but then "turtling" by dropping to the ice and
covering his head when Thornton began swinging. Later, as the game
grew increasingly vicious, Norfolk enforcer Mike Brown was ejected for
spearing and the Bears went on to win 5-2.

Hershey trailed 2-0 five minutes into Game 3's second period when
Robitaille made a predictable but successful gambit. The 6-foot-1,
205-pound Montreal native rushed into a scrum late, drawing Thornton
into another confrontation like the previous night's. This one
escalated and earned Norfolk's captain two game misconducts and a
fighting major.

"I knew he was coming after me,' Robitaille, third in the AHL with 334
regular-season penalty minutes, told the Harrisburg Patriot-News. "It
was a key to the game and maybe the series.'

Hershey scored once on the ensuing five-minute power play and again
shortly thereafter. Later in the period, Haviland was slapped with a
bench minor for shouting at linesman Paul Carnathan, handing the Bears
a 5-on-3 advantage for two minutes.

Hershey didn't score on that chance, but Norfolk's momentum had
evaporated and it eventually trailed 4-2 before losing 5-4 in double
overtime.

Haviland didn't defend Thornton's actions and the player was contrite
after Monday's practice. Thornton acknowledged that his "wires
touched' and that he shouldn't have punched Robitaille after knocking
him to the ice, but said most of his anger was directed at referee
Brian Pochmara.

"In nine years in this league, I've never seen a guy drop his gloves
and not get a fighting major,' Thornton said of Robitaille, who
received only a roughing penalty. "I've got to have more control
wearing the C, but there's a fine line to walk, because when a guy
comes in and starts punching my teammates in the head, it's also my
job to protect them.'

Robitaille told reporters he didn't drop his gloves in the Game 3
fracas and that he was surprised the Admirals would allow themselves
to be baited yet again.

"Even our coaching staff told me, 'Hey, they won't come after you,' '
Robitaille said. "I expected nothing from them.'

Haviland is trying to ensure his troops ignore Hershey's antics
tonight. The coach has addressed players individually and as a group,
sending the same message.

"We've let our emotions get the best of us and we need to just go play
hockey,' Haviland said. "I don't want anyone chasing Robitaille around.'

Easier said than done, as Hershey coach Bruce Boudreau well knows.
Manchester's coach the last few years, he watched Robitaille enrage
the Monarchs while skating for division rival Portland.

"Holy geez, everybody on our team wanted to kill him,' Boudreau said.
"They would have gone out of their way to hurt the guy. He's that much
of an agitator. He's always talking.'

NORFOLK, VA - Today, the Norfolk Admirals announced that forward Scott

NORFOLK, Va. — This was exactly how the Bridgeport Sound Tigers needed
to finish their trip here. Taking control of the game with two goals
less than a minute apart in the first period, the Sound Tigers
defeated the Norfolk Admirals 5-2 on a scrappy Saturday at Scope. The
victory salvaged for Bridgeport a split of the big two-game weekend,
which completes the season series between the East Division rivals.
Norfolk still leads the Sound Tigers by two points for third place
with a game in hand, but a Bridgeport loss, after a 4-2 defeat here
Friday, would have gone a long way to handing the spot to the
Admirals. David Masse cleaned up the rebound of a Matt Koalska shot
after a Masi Marjamaki takeaway, giving the Sound Tigers a 2-1 lead at
10:24 of the first.

Jeremy Colliton scored from the left corner 46 seconds later on a
power play. Trailing 4-1, Norfolk had a last chance to get back into
the game when Joe Tallari high-sticked Eric Meloche 9:19 into the third.

But Colliton scored on a short-handed slapper at 10:06, putting it
away. With 14 games to go, Bridgeport is 12 points ahead of
Philadelphia and Lowell (the Phantoms have two games in hand) and 13
ahead of Binghamton (which has three games in hand) for the final
playoff spot.

The nasty end to Friday's game spilled over into Saturday's game.
Shawn Thornton, who was involved Friday with both Allan Rourke and
Chris Thompson, gave Thompson a slash near the Bridgeport bench 3:04
into the game. As a linesman took him to the penalty box, Thornton
wheeled around and charged back at Thompson before being restrained.

The net result was a two-man advantage for Bridgeport, and Jeff
Hamilton scored at 4:32 on a blast from the top of the left circle.
Thornton's efforts might have put his team down, but Norfolk's Nathan
Barrett tied it on a five-on-three soon after. That was Norfolk's only
power-play goal on seven chances.

Wade Dubielewicz made 30 saves for the Sound Tigers, including a
right-pad stop on Colin Fraser on a short-handed breakaway just before
Hamilton's goal.

Rob Collins, led on a partial breakaway by a Bruno Gervais pass, put a
brilliant shot off the post and in at 10:59 of the second, chasing
goalie Adam Munro, who had stymied Bridgeport with 28 Friday-night
saves. Munro stopped only 14 of 18 shots Saturday. Fraser scored off a
goal-mouth scramble with 5:18 remaining. He had a gaping cage to shoot
at with 1:46 left, but Dubielewicz got across to glove it. Norfolk won
the season series 6-4, with each team winning once in overtime. That
is the second tiebreaker, in case the teams should finish tied in both
points and wins. 3 STARS

JEREMY COLLITON, BRIDGEPORT — Scored an insurance goal, then the
back-breaking goal. ROB COLLINS, BRIDGEPORT — Another solid game with
a goal and two assists. WADE DUBIELEWICZ, BRIDGEPORT — A couple of
spectacular saves. UNSUNG HERO — David Masse got to the net for a
rebound that put Bridgeport ahead for good. UP NEXT — Friday at

Sound Tigers 'sick' of Admirals - 3/13
MICHAEL FORNABAIO mfornabaio@...

NORFOLK, Va. — Shawn Thornton had been looking for trouble since Friday. He found it Saturday, but from referee Harry Dumas more than anyone. Thornton, a Norfolk Admirals veteran and a standout forward, cost himself 14 minutes in the penalty box early in the first period of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers' 5-2 win Saturday night, which kept them in the third-place race. It was all a spillover from Friday's Norfolk victory, in which Thornton was pulled down by Allan Rourke on a partial breakaway late in the game, sliding into the end boards. "You play a team 10 times, you're going to have (stuff) like that," coach Dave Baseggio said. "They're sick of seeing us. We're sick of seeing them."
Thornton seemed most sick of it all. Somehow, he got mixed up at the end Friday with Chris Thompson.
"He was just mad at Rourke at the end, and he was staring down the bench," Thompson said. "I couldn't even understand what he was saying, and he probably couldn't understand what I was saying."
In warmup, Thornton and Thompson found themselves next to each other at the red line and had an undemonstrative but not-so-friendly chat. On the first shift for both players, Thornton shoved Thompson a couple of times but got no response. Thompson didn't feel he had a reason to fight Thornton. At the end of the shift, that feeling paid off.
Thornton slashed Thompson in front of the Bridgeport bench, was plucked out of the ensuing scrum by the officials, then earned a misconduct by rushing back toward Thompson after he got near the penalty box.
Bridgeport received a five-on-three power play after Dumas added a slashing penalty to Martin St. Pierre. Jeff Hamilton scored 88 seconds later. "Us getting on the board first gave us some momentum," Thompson said. "I thought we played a really good game."
It's tough to say Thornton's penalty swung momentum in Bridgeport's favor, because Nathan Barrett scored not long after, on a five-on-three of the Admirals' own. But Bridgeport scored twice more before the period was over and two more before the Admirals scored again. "(Barrett's goal) took a little wind out of us. Not much, though," Baseggio said. "We felt pretty good about what we needed to do. We came out and did it."
The Sound Tigers bused home after the game. They will return to practice today, the day on which they must report their 22-man Clear Day roster to the league. That list determines who is eligible to play the rest of the season and the playoffs.

Bridgeport, exhaustion flatten the Admirals

By TRIS WYKES, The Virginian-Pilot
© March 12, 2006

NORFOLK — Perhaps it was fatigue that clouded Shawn Thornton's
judgment and hindered his Norfolk Admirals teammates in a 5-2 loss
Saturday to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at Scope.

Whatever the reason, the Admirals were behind from the start of their
13th game in 21 days and their second home contest in as many nights
following the longest road trip in franchise history. Friday's
Norfolk victory ended with Thornton, a team leader but prone to
occasional tantrums, earning a misconduct for trying to fight several
Sound Tigers. It didn't take a psychologist to realize he'd be out for
blood Saturday, and Bridgeport played him like a fiddle.

First, the Sound Tigers' Chris Thompson refused to brawl, absorbing
several Thornton cross-checks and slashes. And Thompson still kept his
cool seconds later after a Thornton body check that could have been
called a charge by referee Harry Dumas.

The resulting scrum near the team benches in the fourth minute earned
Thornton two minor penalties and a 10-minute misconduct. Bridgeport
used the 5-on-3 power play to take a 1-0 lead, and Thornton didn't
escape the penalty box until five minutes remained in the first
period. Thornton "wanted to get his point across but ... he does have
to control himself,'' said Norfolk coach Mike Haviland, who held a
closed-door meeting with the team after the game. "Maybe he thought he
was going to spark us with a fight, but that other kid wasn't going to
go with him.

"Thorty did what he did, but we also took some other dumb penalties.
We talked at the first intermission about how we had to get back to
playing.''

Nathan Barrett tied the game with a power-play goal in the seventh
minute, but the Sound Tigers led 3-1 after 20 minutes, and they sent
Norfolk starting goaltender Adam Munro to the showers with their
fourth goal midway through the second period.

By the time Bridgeport fired a shorthanded goal past relief netminder
Corey Crawford with 10 minutes left in the game, an announced crowd of
4,360 was deadly quiet and the score was 5-1.

Third-place Norfolk's lead over Bridgeport has dropped to two points
as they battle for playoff position. The Admirals host Hartford next
weekend and Portland the weekend after that, battling the Atlantic
Division's two best teams.

Notes: The Virginian-Pilot's three stars: Bridgeport's Jeremy Colliton
(1), Rob Collins (2) and goaltender Wade Dubielewicz (3). ... AHL
teams must submit their "clear-day lists'' Monday — essentially
playoff rosters. ... Pavel Vorobiev missed his fifth game with a
bruised knee. ... Ex-Admiral and current Portland Pirate Geoff Peters
has scored 20 goals for the first time in his career. ... Ex-Admirals
defenseman Steve McCarthy was traded from Vancouver to Atlanta shortly
before the NHL trade deadline Thursday.

Shawn Thornton (B-): He was rather ineffective to start the season,
but a couple of Blackhawks promotions seem to have energized this
fan favorite, and he's been one of Norfolk's best players of late.

------

Norfolk Admirals center Martin St. Pierre is accustomed to receiving
limited respect, even from his own teammates.

While beginning an interview in a Scope hallway recently, St. Pierre
paused when veteran Shawn Thornton stopped to ask what was going on.
Told that an account of St. Pierre's recent hockey history was in
the works, Thornton guffawed.

"It's going to be a short story, eh?'' he said, pun intended.

St. Pierre, all 5 feet, 8¼ inches and 185 pounds of him, takes such
kidding in stride. The AHL rookie leads Norfolk with 11 goals and 30
points, and has come up big for a team that long has struggled to
produce offense.

Hershey crunches Norfolk before large crowd
  By TRIS WYKES, The Virginian-Pilot
© January 28, 2006

NORFOLK — It's known as "The Curse of the Big Crowd'' among Norfolk
Admirals fans and observers, an evil spell that seems to befall the
home hockey team when the Scope turnstiles spin most often.

The Admirals have lost almost every time they've drawn their best
crowds. Their combined record for the highest home attendance counts
in each of their six seasons was 1-4-1 heading into Friday's game
with Hershey.

Norfolk had a three-goal lead at the game's midpoint before an
announced crowd of 7,064, a franchise record. Everything was
beautiful for the Admirals, but rarely has a game so suddenly turned
ugly, and it produced a 7-4 loss.

"Guys in here complain that there aren't enough people in the
stands, and then we get them in the building and we come up with an
effort like that?'' said Norfolk's Shawn Thornton, whose team
allowed six consecutive goals, five in the third period. "I
apologize to all the fans who showed up. I hope they come back and
that we're better for them.''

It would be hard for the Admirals to be worse. It was the fourth
time in franchise history they've blown a three-goal lead, but
Friday's circumstances might make it the team's worst collapse .

The buzz at Scope began Wednesday, when word circulated that more
than 4,000 tickets had been sold for Friday's game. The crush of
people and traffic around Scope shortly before face-off bore that
out.

Those who saw the entire first period watched Hershey score first
but then surrender three Norfolk goals. Bears goaltender Kirk
Daubenspeck was replaced after the third Admirals score.

The Admirals' lead increased to 4-1 after Martin St. Pierre tipped
in a Thornton pass six minutes into the second period.

Hershey got one goal back four minutes later, then absolutely
crushed Norfolk in the third period , when rookie goaltender Mike
McKenna faced 20 Bears shots.

Graham Mink scored four minutes after the second intermission to
make it 4-3, and Mike Green blasted in a one-timer from center point
just 21 seconds later to tie the game.

Colin Forbes made it 5-4 on a power-play goal from atop the left
circle with Mink setting a screen in front.

Norfolk's Carl Corazzini was awarded a penalty shot with 10 minutes
to play, but Frederic Cassivi stopped his backhand shot. Eleven
seconds later, Hershey's Dave Steckel scored from close range.

Any realistic chance for a Norfolk comeback died with consecutive
penalties by Admirals Ajay Baines, Mike Brown, Nick Kuiper and
Michal Barinka. Brown, ordered off the ice with a misconduct,
shattered his stick against the locker-room door frame , sending
spectators ducking for cover.

Hershey closed the scoring on its third power-play goal with three
minutes to play. Several pieces of trash were tossed on the ice, and
some in the departing crowd booed.

"We were lazy and they beat us to loose pucks even to start the
game,'' said Norfolk coach Mike Haviland . "We just stopped
playing.''

The Admirals are at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton tonight and at Hershey on
Sunday .

Notes: The Virginian-Pilot's three stars: Hershey's Forbes (1) and
Mink (2) and Norfolk's Thornton (3). ... Eric Meloche and Milan
Bartovic were Norfolk's scratches. ... Michal Barinka was rated a
team-worst minus-3 and committed two penalties, one of which led to
a goal. He also waved feebly at Mike Kompon a split second before
the Bear opened the scoring. ... The Admirals' previous high for an
announced Scope crowd was 7,056 on

NORFOLK (6) VS LOWELL LOCK MONSTERS (1)
NorfolkAdmirals.com

Twelve Admirals had at least a point in the game as Norfolk defeated
the Lowell Lock Monsters 6-1 at Scope.

The Admirals found the back of the net first in the opening frame on a
power play. Carl Corazzini entered the offensive zone, skated from
right to left in front of the crease and sent a wrister past Lock
Monsters' netminder Craig Kowalski at 7:22. Norfolk doubled its lead
with 39 seconds left in the first, as Martin St. Pierre scored off a
rebound on the power play. The home team took a 2-0 lead into the
first intermission.

The lead grew to three goals three minutes into the second stanza.
Mike Brown passed the puck to Matt Keith in the slot. Kowalski stopped
his initial shot, but Keith stuffed home his own rebound at 3:29.
Lowell closed to within two goals six minutes later, as Mike Zigomanis
netted a five-on-three power play goal. However, the Admirals regained
their three-goal lead on a shorthanded goal with eight seconds left in
the middle period. Mark Cullen got the puck off a turnover in the
neutral zone and skated in on Kowalski two-on-one with James
Wisniewski. Cullen sent a saucer pass to Wisniewski, who one-timed it
past Kowalski at 19:52. Norfolk held a 4-1 lead after forty minutes.

The lead grew to four goals 3:49 into the final frame. Nick Kuiper
received the puck after just having exited the sin bin and broke in on
Kowalski two-on-one. Kuiper dished the puck to Ajay Baines, who
one-timed it past Kowalski. The Admirals got their final goal from
Mark Cullen with nine seconds remaining in the third to win the game 6-1.

Corey Crawford finished with 23 saves for Norfolk while Lowell's Craig
Kowalski made 47 stops.

Norfolk was 2-8 on the power play while Lowell was 1-7.

In the third period, Dustin Byfuglien briefly sparked Norfolk's
offense when he muscled his way past a lone defender and scored
unassisted at the 7:02 mark. But Lowell countered with four more
