Visiting Albany overcame a 2-1 deficit in the third period to come away with a 3-2 win over the Admirals at Scope.
Albany’s Jason Ryznar gave the River Rats a 1-0 lead at 8:54 of the opening frame. But Norfolk Answered right back, as Martin St. Pierre netted his fourth goal of the season 1:09 later.
Though Norfolk held a 27-18 advantage on the shot clock after two, the game remained deadlocked at 1-1 with 20 minutes to go.
The Admirals gained the lead for the first time in the sixth minute of the final stanza. Carl Corazzini fed a cross pass from the side of the net to a wide open Shawn Thornton, who banged home his second of the season at 5:36. Consecutive penalties to Nathan Barrett at 10:49 and Steve Munn at 11:02 gave Albany a five-on-three advantage midway through the period. Ahren Nittel connected eight seconds after Munn’s high-sticking call to knot the score at 2-2.
With just over two minutes left in regulation, Albany’s Ivan Khomutov was whistled for holding, giving Norfolk a power play. But a Dustin Byfuglien turnover at mid-ice led to a two-on-one break for the Rats. Ryznar fed the puck to Ryan Murphy who beat Corey Crawford for the game-winner at the 18:28 mark.
Frank Doyle made 37 stops to pick up the win for Albany while Crawford finished with 24 saves for the Admirals.
Norfolk was 0-5 on the power play while Albany was 1-6.
