Head Coach - Wellesley College , Wellesley , MA
The Wellesley College squash team is seeking an experienced and
enthusiastic head coach for the 2006-2007 season.
The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, experience coaching on
both technical and strategic aspects of the game, and will be able to
coach players at all levels. Responsibilities will include leading daily
practices and coaching at matches and tournaments.
Wellesley 's squash program dates back to 1940 with varsity competition
beginning in 1969. The team has Howe Cup and Seven Sisters Championships
to its name as well as a strong tradition of scholar-athlete achievement.
Recent honors include the Clarence C. Chaffee Award at the 2005 Howe Cup.
The team suffered a setback after the recent decision of Wellesley 's
outgoing Athletic Director to terminate the varsity squash program. We
remain in contact with administrators about reinstatement and are hopeful
that the incoming director will be open to a dialogue on the issue. In
the interim, we would like to maintain varsity level competition and will
continue to accept applications for the coaching position until it is
filled.

Evergreen Summer Doubles Tournament Summary
72 entries representing 57 teams played in the Summer Doubles Tournament hosted by Evergreen Squash Club July 18 â 23rd. This tournament is starting to get noticed across North America now: we had 2 entries from Toronto ; 1 from Denver ; 1 from New York ; and another team from Toronto & Denver but had to cancel at the last moment â all had a keen interest to bring more people next year.
We actually had another person interested from Denver who emailed me that he wanted
an entry form because he could not find one at his club - Denver Athletic Club! I of course apologized we did not send his club entries and reassured him we would do that next year.
As the weekend witnessed record heat, the action on court was just as hot. The ball just wouldnât die and we had more games going to 5 than any other year. This backed up courts on all days. Saturday play started at 9:00am and did not finish till after 10:00pm (2 hours behind schedule). So thank you for coping with the heat and your patience.

Squash BC is looking for squash pictures.
Itâs getting to be that time of year again when we start putting together various publications we send out to our members. Weâd like to âJazzâ up the publications a bit with a few more photos. There are a few parameters to keep in mind.
- The photos should be in a digital form.
- They should be squash related in some way. Action shots are great.
- They should be saved with your name in the title. This will make it much easier to keep track of who took what picture.
- Privacy will be established. We will not publish names and pictures together unless permission is obtained.
- We wonât use shots that have large mugs with frothy substances or like refreshments in the pictures being held up to salute the photographer. (This will cut out 50% of the pictures but we do have to draw the line.)
You may be asking yourself why you should go to the trouble of sending Squash BC any pictures.
If Squash BC uses any of your pictures in any publication, we will give you a
âFREE Squash BC Membership for One Year!!â
Please send the photoâs to kkydd@....

Team BC Junior Squash Team
By: Rebecca Saban
While most teenagers spent their spring break catching up on some much-needed sleep, hanging out with friends at the local mall, or on a family vacation, 25 of British Columbia âs best junior squash players took part in a spring training camp and competition. In addition to the rigors common to any training camp, the young squash players received support and guidance from SportMedBCâs Total Sport Performance program.
Earlier this spring, young squash players from across the province gathered at West Vancouver âs Hollyburn Country Club for Team BC tryouts and the opportunity to compete at the 2007 Canada Winter Games next February. As part of SportMedBCâs Total Sport Performance program, athletes received functional assessments, mental training seminars, individual medical monitoring sessions with a physician, and sport nutrition advice from a Registered Dietitian.
Clyde Smith, a physiotherapist from the Allan McGavin Sport Medicine Centre â Plaza of Nations , was one of the practitioners who worked with the squash players. Among other things, when he performs functional assessments of athletes, Clyde tests the flexibility and range of motion of the athletes, and if needed the athlete is flagged for a follow-up session if Clyde or other practitioners identifies a problem. Total Sport Performance Coordinator Misty Thomas says, âOne of our goals is to use these sessions as a means of preventing future injury and to improve athlete performance.â Jeff Boag, the Team BC Head coach for Team BC squash, believes functional assessments are an effective means to prevent common injuries to areas like the groin and the Achilles tendon. After each one-on-one assessment, athletes are given specific exercises based on
individual needs.
The physiotherapist plays a valuable role as he or she is able to identify muscle imbalances and postural issues that can lead to injuries, and then working with the strength and conditioning specialist, provide suggestions to improve the problematic area. âAn athlete can be number one, but if s/he has a muscle imbalance from favouring one side of the body, it has the potential to manifest into a major problem,â says Boag. Coaches are often shocked to hear that their star player has a muscle imbalance to work on, but Misty adds, âJust think about how good a number one player could be if he or she followed the physiotherapistâs and strength and conditioning specialistâs recommendations.â
SportMedBCâs in-house dietitian Jennifer Gibson was on hand to provide nutritional support. At the Team BC squash training camp, Jennifer gave a group presentation that included a question and answer session where she asked players to share some of their eating patterns while at the camp. Within her interactive discussion, she provides valuable information on recovery foods, the ârightâ and âwrongâ foods to eat before and after exercise, best fluid choices, and how to refuel between games throughout the day.
Throughout the rest of the week, the athletes worked with their assigned strength and conditioning specialist , Anthony Findlay. Anthony provided the athletes with various cross training activities to improve the strength and flexibility of areas specifically important to squash players.
The Team BC Squash team received the complete Total Sport Performance experience. SportMedBC has been working with athletes, like the BC squash players since 1993 to identify the sport-specific needs of individual athletes.
So you think you can get away with it???
Canadian Racquetball Athlete Commits Anti-Doping Rule Violation
( Ottawa , Ontario â July 14, 2006) â The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) announced today that Kane Waselenchuk, a Canadian racquetball athlete, committed an anti-doping rule violation. The violation occurred during an in-competition doping control conducted at the Canadian National Racquetball Championships in Edmonton , Alberta on May 27, 2006.
Mr. Waselenchukâs anti-doping rule violation was a result of his urine sample returning adverse analytical findings for Cannabis and Cocaine metabolite, both prohibited substances on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List.
In response to the CCESâ notification of the adverse analytical findings, Mr. Waselenchuk waived his right to a hearing and acknowledged the anti-doping rule violation. The athlete has received a sanction of two years sport
ineligibility and permanent ineligibility for federal sport funding.
In all his dealings with the CCES, Mr. Waselenchuk has been very cooperative and at this time wishes to make the following statement:
âKane does not wish to go into detail regarding the presence of a substance which he cannot explainâ, stated his spokesperson. Kane does state, "I did not ingest any cocaine knowingly; as for the cannabis I was honest about it from the start. I am very sorry about the whole situation and I apologize to my friends, family and fans. This also is not a reflection of my character.â
The CCES is an independent, national, non-profit organization. Our mission, to foster ethical sport in Canada , is carried out through research, promotion, education, detection and deterrence, as well as through programs and partnerships with other organizations.

Semi #1: Lee Beachill (ENG) v Thierry Lincou (FRA)
A repeat of last year's classic Super Series Semi Final when Beachill had seven match points in the fourth only for Lincou to play flawless squash and eventually won the game 16-14. However, Beachill (a former World #1) is unbeaten in this tournament and looks back to his best and very strong against his fellow English players in the group stage.
Semi #2: Amr Shabana (EGY)v Anthony Ricketts (AUS)
World #1 Amr Shabana has only been beaten twice by players ranked inside the PSA top 20 and is looking to take his first Super Series Finals title. Shabana leads 4-1 in head to heads but Ricketts beat Shabana in the Tournament of Champions Semi Final 2005 (a tournament he went on to win). Enthralling action and some amazing insights from Jansher Khanâs former mentor Satinder Bajwa in the commentary box.
Final: Lee Beachill (ENG) v Anthony Ricketts (AUS)
Beachill and Ricketts have already played each other in this tournament in which Beachill came out on top 3-2 in the longest match of the tournament. It was another hot day in central London and with it being the first appearance for both players in a Super Series Finals, the packed crowd were treated to another final to remember with a major controversy involving the tournament referee thrown in as well.

Calling All Juniors:
Squash BC has entered into a program with the Sport Branch that is known as âThe Ministry of Education External Sport Credentials Program.â The program in a nutshell is a junior can apply to the program in several different areas as either a coach or an athlete. As a coach you will have to become certified at a Coaching Foundations level and coach a minimum number of hours in a year. As an athlete you must be actively be on the provincial squad/team or be on the BC Winter Games/Canada Winter Games teams and train a certain number of hours under a minimum level 3 coach.
Both the Coaching and Athlete program will give you 4 credits towards your high school graduation. Not a bad deal. Part of the application process will make you get a letter signed by your high school counselor, so you may want to do this in the next month.
For more information on this, call me at the office, 604-737-3084 or just reply to this and I will send you the program outline and criteria.
