SEATTLE SPORTS COMMISSION TAKES A STAND AGAINST YOUTH OBESITY
Campaign Kicks Off with State-Wide Sports Competition
SEATTLE –The Seattle Sports Commission's ongoing efforts to fight
youth obesity will hit athletic playing fields, stadiums, gymnasiums
and pools throughout Western Washington beginning June 29.
The Washington Games, a statewide Olympic-style sporting
competition, will attract some 7,500 participants in more than 20
sporting events that range from basketball and swimming to non-
traditional sports such as skateboarding.
The Games are a major component of the SSC's Powered by You
health initiative, a public awareness campaign fighting youth obesity
by promoting healthier lifestyles. In addition to the Games, the
campaign combines a web site, public service announcements and joint
messaging with private companies and local health and community
leaders to deliver its crucial message to the state's youth.
"The Games are a great opportunity for both children and parents
to empower themselves to become active and avoid obesity while
providing a foundation for development of healthy attitudes toward
sports," said Ralph Morton, SSC Executive Director.
Nearly one in four of Washington State's youth in grades eight, 10
and 12 are overweight or obese, according to the State of
Washington's Children 2006-2007 report published by the University of
Washington. The report also found that thirty percent of
Washington's eighth graders do not participate in physical education
classes in an average school week.
"Youth obesity is a national epidemic, but we know that Western
Washington has powerful resources and a health-minded community that,
working together, can have a positive influence on children's
attitudes and begin to affect change," said Morton.
The SSC worked closely with Virginia Mason Medical Center - a driving
force behind the health campaign and the Games - and marshaled a team
of local health leaders and corporate sponsors committed to making a
difference in the fight against youth obesity.
The public may learn more about the Washington Games and
participation guidelines by visiting www.washingtongames.org. More
can be learned about SSC's ongoing youth health campaign at
www.poweredbyyou.org; the web site also offers health and fitness
facts and resources.

I would like to remind you of the WSSG. The badminton tournament will
be held Aug 3 in Tacoma, run by Joe Moelders. www.pugetsoundgames.com
This will be the qualification tournament if you want to go to the
National Sr Olympics in San Francisco in '09.
After several of us having tried for about 10 years to get the World
Huntsman Games in St. George to include badminton, they are finally
going to give it a try this year! The Games will be held from 10/6-
18, with badminton 10/13-14. This will be Utah's State Games, so it
will also be a qualifying event for the National St Olympics. So, if
you are unable to make the tournament on August 3, you could qualify
for Nationals in ST George. Or, you could play and qualify in both. I
have been to the Huntsman Games several times, and it's a wonderful
experience! They do a great job. I hope that a lot of you will be
able to support it. To have one of their entry brochures mailed to
you, you can call the toll free # 800 562 1268 or their website is
www.seniorgames.net. If you DO decide to enter the Huntsman Games,
there is a space on the entry form that says "Bring a Buddy". It's
for those who've never entered the Huntsman Games before to put in
the name of the person who has entered before and told them about it,
and that person will receive a $10 gift certificate for the gift
shop. I'd appreciate it if you would put my name in that space. I
hope that a lot of you will attend and support it. I guarantee you
won't be disappointed.
Thanks again for supporting the Northwest Sr Games. Joyce

The weather was hot and the badminton actions were even hotter over the
weekend at Bellevue Community College. Similar to the previous years,
there’re around 190 participants at this year’s Washington State Badminton
tournament, but some of the event has more entries. All these made it
harder to schedule all the matches, we did squeeze all the matches in
without too much delay and everyone got to enjoy the dinner on Saturday.
Despite blowing air, close court space and thin court lines, BCC worked out
great to host the tournament. There’re plenty of space in the middle for
players/spectators and we can provide food and drink.
At the dinner banquet, we recognized several people who are instrumental to
make the tournament successful last 5 years, Annie Poh for getting the
venues at ProClub and Bellevue Community College, Helen Roome for treasurer
and entering entries and Jenny and Joahnes Jie for food preparation.
This competition is one of the strongest ever, especially for the mixed
events, there’re more entries in the event and some ex national or junior
national players from Taiwan, Singapore, Israel, Poland and some top players
from Vancouver, BC.
BC Vancouver pair of Elisha Liu and Adrian Liu won the event against
Francesca Setiati and Piotr Mazur in a 3 game tight contested match.
In women’s singles, the doubles partner Francesca Setiati and Elisha Liu
played against each other, Francesca won the tough 3 game matches to reclaim
the crown she won previously.
Chi-Lin Li from Taiwan won the men’s singles event against Paz Ben-Sira and
made it tough for Paz to come back in both games.
Aki Ito and Lindy Liu took the women’s doubles crown against Elisha Liu and
Francesca Setiati.
Chi-Lin Liu and Rick Liew won in a 3 game affair against Paz Ben-Sira and
Toru Takayanagi.
Many many thanks to all the volunteers who helped out through the whole
tournament and the juniors that I don’t remember all their names at the
tournament desk on Sunday, there’re quite a few junior helped out over the
weekend, thanks, little ones.

2008 WSBA Junior Championships
Bellevue Badminton Club, April 26, 2008
Note of Thanks
The second Washington State Junior Championship took place last
Saturday April 26, 2008 at Bellevue Badminton Club. There are 79
players, mostly from the greater Seattle area. 6 of them are from
Spokane, 8 from Victoria/Vancouver Canada, 1 from California and many
from Sedro Woolley. Their presence at the tournament definitely
added more competitiveness to the matches. Results are posted on
www.northwestbadminton.org.
This year's T-Shirt is designed by Tina Pham. I heard nothing but
good things about the design and color of the shirt. Good job, Tina!
Once again, Yonex (through Eric Lee) supplied the shuttles and lots
of door prizes including grips, hats, towels and racket bags. We
raffled the newest Yonex ArcSaber racket and the winner was Joseph
Smith. Congratulations!
Apart from the medals, added to the players' collection this year is
a souvenir badminton trophy. Hope you like it. If you have not

Hi everyone: You should all be receiving your Northwest Sr Games brochure in a couple weeks. Badminton will be held on June 6&7. I hope you'll all be able to participate. If you haven't received a brochure by 4/15, or if you know of other 50+ players who didn't play last year and should be sent an entry, let me know.
You should all also consider entering the Washington State Sr Games. Badminton will be held August 3. This will be the State qualification event for the National Sr Olympics to be held August 1-15, '09 in San Francisco. This will be the first time the Nationals will be held in the West. You can go to www.pugetsoundgames.com to get more info.
I have other exciting news. After several of us having tried for about 10 years to get the World Huntsman Games in St. George to include badminton, they are finally going to give it a try this year! The Games will be held from 10/6-18, with badminton 10/13-14. This will be Utah's State Games, so it will also be a qualifying event for the National St Olympics. So, if you are unable to make the tournament on August 3, you could qualify for Nationals here. Or, you could play and qualify in both. I have been to the Huntsman Games several times, and it's a wonderful experience! They do a great job. I hope that a lot of you will be able to support it. To have one of their entry brochures mailed to you, you can call the toll free # 800 562 1268 or their website is www.seniorgames.net.
